In this work, a friction and wear simulator was used to reproduce the Anterior-Posterior （AP） sliding and the Flex- ion-Extension （FE） rotation generated in the knee joint during human gait cycle. We chose to simplify the contact geometry between the Total Knee Arthroplasty （TKA） femoral component and tibial insert. A 304L stainless steel cylinder which replaces the femoral component was loaded onto a flat High Density Polyethylene （HDPE） block which replaces the tibial insert. The tribological behavior of the considered contact was analyzed by tracking the number of cycles, the friction coefficient, the roughness of the wear track on HDPE, the HDPE weight loss and the damage mechanisms. The friction coefficient shows a gradual increase with the number of cycles for both AP and FE kinematics. The evolution of friction coefficient with the number of cycles is not affected by the value of the imposed normal load in the case of AP sliding. For the FE rotation, decreased friction coefficient is obtained when the imposed normal load increases. For both considered AP and FE kinematics, the roughness of the wear track on the HDPE is not affected by the imposed normal load. It shows a progressive decrease when the number of cycles increases. The wear of HDPE obeys the Archard law and the wear coefficient increases with the normal force. For a given value of normal load, the obtained wear coefficient for the AP sliding is larger than that obtained for FE rotation. A predominant adhesive wear mechanism was identified for both AP and FE kinematics. Under the same normal load, damage development in terms of plastic deformation, micro-cracking and debonding is more pronounced for the AP sliding if compared with the FE rotation. For a given kinematics, the damage severity increases with the normal load. This finding is in good agreement with the predicted values of the wear coefficient according to the Archard law.

On account of the poor biocompatibility of synthetic prosthesis,millions of rhinoplasty recipients have been forced to choose autologous costal cartilage as grafts,which suffer from limited availability,morbidity at the donor site and prolonged operation ***,as a promising alternative to autologous costal cartilage,we developed a novel xenogeneic costal cartilage and explored its feasibility as a rhinoplasty graft for the first *** an improved decellularization protocol,in which the ionic detergent was substituted by trypsin,the resulting decellularized graft was confirmed to preserve more structural components and better mechanics,and eliminate cellular components *** in vitro and in vivo compatibility experiments demonstrated that the decellularized graft showed excellent biocompatibility and ***,the functionality assessment of rhinoplasty was performed in a rabbit model,and the condition of grafts after implantation was comprehensively *** optimized graft exhibited better capacity to reduce the degradation rate and maintain the morphology,in comparison to the decellularized costal cartilage prepared by conventional *** findings indicate that this optimized graft derived from decellularized xenogeneic costal cartilage provides a new prospective for future investigations of rhinoplasty prosthesis and has great potential for clinical application.

Novel double-layer Silastic testicular prosthesis with controlled release of testosterone in vitro, and its effects on castrated rats

Testicular prostheses have been used to deal with anorchia for nearly 80 years. Here, we evaluated a novel testicular prosthesis that can controllably release hormones to maintain physiological levels of testosterone in vivo for a long time. Silastic testicular prostheses with controlled release of testosterone （STPT） with different dosages of testosterone undecanoate （TU） were prepared and implanted into castrated Sprague-Dawley rats. TU oil was applied by oral administration to a separate group of castrated rats. Castrated untreated and sham-operated groups were used as controls. Serum samples from every group were collected to measure the levels of testosterone （T）, follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone （LH）. Maximum intracavernous penile pressure （ICPmax） was recorded. The prostates and seminal vesicles were weighed and subjected to histology, and a terminal dexynucleotidyl transferase-mediated UTP nick end labeling （TUNEL） assay was used to evaluate apoptosis. Our results revealed that the weights of these tissues and the levels of T and LH showed significant statistical differences in the oral administration and TU replacement groups compared with the castrated group （P 〈 0.05）. Compared with the sham-operated group, the ICPmax, histology and TUNEL staining for apoptosis, showed no significant differences in the hormone replacement groups implanted with medium and high doses of STPT. Our results suggested that this new STPT could release TU stably through its double semi-permeable membranes with excellent biocompatibility. The study provides a new approach for testosterone replacement therapy.

3D printing-based drug-loaded implanted prosthesis to prevent breast cancer recurrence post-conserving surgery

Gesture recognition for transhumeral prosthesis control using EMG and NIR

A key challenge associated with myoelectric prosthesis limbs is the acquisition of a good quality gesture intent signal from the residual anatomy of an *** this study,the authors aim to overcome this limitation by observing the classification accuracy of the fusion of wearable electromyography(EMG)and near-infrared(NIR)to classify eight hand gesture motions across 12 able-bodied *** part of the study,they investigate the classification accuracy across a multi-layer perceptron neural network,linear discriminant analysis and quadratic discriminant analysis for different sensing configurations,***-only,NIR-only and EMG-NIR.A separate offline ultrasound scan was conducted as part of the study and served as a ground truth and contrastive basis for the results picked up from the wearable sensors,and allowed for a closer study of the anatomy along the humerus during gesture *** and findings from the work suggest that it could be possible to further develop transhumeral prosthesis using affordable,ergonomic and wearable EMG and NIR sensing,without the need for invasive neuromuscular sensors or further hardware complexity.

BACKGROUND Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors(IMTs)are defined as tumors composed of differentiated myofibroblastic spindle cells,usually accompanied by numerous plasma cells and lymphocytes,and classified as intermediate(occasionally metastatic)by the World Health *** pathogenesis and biological behavior have not yet been *** IMT is extremely rare,and prosthesis implantation combined with IMT has not been *** study reports a case of IMT following resection of a malignant phyllodes tumor of the left breast and implantation of a *** SUMMARY A 41-year-old female presented to our hospital with a mass in the left breast for 3 *** patient had undergone resection of a large mass in her left breast pathologically diagnosed as a malignant phyllodes tumor and implantation of a prosthesis five years *** examination revealed an oval mass in the left breast,and the patient underwent left breast mass resection and prosthesis *** microscopy revealed the spindle cells to be diffusely proliferated,with a large number of neutrophils,lymphocytes,and plasma cell *** staining revealed that the spindle cells were partially positive for smooth muscle actin,which is positive for BCL-2 and cluster of differentiation(CD)99 but were negative for anaplastic lymphoma kinase,cytokeratin,S-100 protein,desmin,and *** final diagnosis was *** recurrence or metastasis was observed during the 5-year postoperative *** prosthesis implantation may be one of the causes of IMT,but further investigation is necessary to prove it.
