Background prenatal bisphenol exposure has been reported to be associated with lower birth weight and obesity-related indicators in early *** findings warrant an investigation of the relationship between prenatal bisphenol exposure and the dynamic growth of *** study aimed to evaluate the relationship of maternal bisphenol concentration in urine with the body mass index(BMI)growth trajectory of children aged up to two years and to identify the critical exposure *** A total of 826 mother–offspring pairs were recruited from Wuhan Children’s Hospital between November 2013 and March *** urine samples collected during the first,second,and third trimesters were analyzed for bisphenol A(BPA),bisphenol S,and bisphenol F(BPF)*** of length and weight were taken at 0,1,3,6,8,12,18,and 24 ***'s BMI was standardized using the World Health Organization reference,and group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify BMI growth *** associations between prenatal bisphenol exposure and BMI growth trajectory patterns were assessed using multinomial logistic regression *** The BMI growth trajectories of the 826 children were categorized into four patterns:low-stable(n=134,16.2%),low-increasing(n=142,17.2%),moderate-stable(n=350,42.4%),and moderate-increasing(n=200,24.2%).After adjusting for potential confounders,we observed that prenatal exposure to BPA during the second trimester[odds ratio(OR)=2.20,95%confidence interval(CI)=1.09–4.43]and BPF during the third trimester(OR=3.28,95%CI=1.55–6.95)at the highest quartile concentration were associated with an increased likelihood of the low-increasing BMI ***,in the subgroup analysis by infant sex,the positive association between the highest quartile of prenatal average urinary BPF concentration during the whole pregnancy and the low-increasing BMI trajectory was found only in girls(OR=2.82,95%CI=1.04–7.68).Conclus

The Identification of prenatal exposure to Mitragynine Using Umbilical Cord Tissue

Objective: Kratom is widely available and literature exploring the effects of prenatal kratom exposure is lacking. This study aims to report a validated method for the detection of mitragynine in the umbilical cord and report our observations for specimens received at a national commercial reference laboratory. Study Design: Assays were validated according to the recommendations of ANSI/ASB. A retrospective evaluation of records at a national reference laboratory was conducted to determine prevalence and co-exposure to other substances of abuse. Result: Mitragynine was detected in 19 of 4456 specimens (0.43%) with concentrations ranging from 4 to >50 ng/g. Thirteen (13) of these specimens were positive for only mitragynine while the other 6 were also positive for either marijuana or opiates. Conclusion: Umbilical cord is a suitable specimen type for the surveillance of maternal kratom use and can be used to identify exposed neonates for further investigations into short- or long- term health consequences.

prenatal amoxicillin exposure induces developmental toxicity in fetal mice and its characteristics

Amoxicillin,a widely used antibiotic in human and veterinary pharmaceuticals,is now considered as an“emerging contaminant”because it exists widespreadly in the environment and brings a series of adverse ***,systematic studies about the developmental toxicity of amoxicillin are still *** explored the potential effects of amoxicillin exposure on pregnancy outcomes,maternal/fetal serum phenotypes,and fetal multiple organ development in mice,at different doses(75,150,300 mg/(kg·day))during late-pregnancy,or at a dose of 300 mg/(kg·day)during different stages(mid-/latepregnancy)and courses(single-/multi-course).Results showed that prenatal amoxicillin exposure(PAmE)had no significant infuence on the body weights of dams,but it could inhibit the physical development and reduce the survival rate of fetuses,especially during the ***,PAmE altered multiple maternal/fetal serum phenotypes,especially in *** multi-organ function results showed that PAmE inhibited testicular/adrenal steroid synthesis,long bone/cartilage and hippocampal development,and enhanced ovarian steroid synthesis and hepatic glycogenesis/lipogenesis,and the order of severity might be gonad(testis,ovary)>liver>*** analysis found that PAmE-induced multiorgan developmental and functional alterations had differences in stages,courses and fetal gender,and the most obvious changes might be in high-dose,late-pregnancy and multicourse,but there was no typical rule of a dose-response *** conclusion,this study confirmed that PAmE could cause abnormal development and multi-organ function alterations,which deepens our understanding of the risk of PAmE and provides an experimental basis for further exploration of the long-term harm.

The understanding of the impact of prenatal exposure to metal mixtures on birth weight is *** aimed to identify metal mixture components associated with birth weight and to determine additional pairwise interactions between metals showing such *** of 18 metals were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in urine samples collected in the 3rd trimester from a prenatal cohort(discovery;n=1849)and the Healthy Baby Cohort(replication;n=7255)in Wuhan,*** the discovery set,we used two penalized regression models,i.e.,elastic net regression for main effects and a lasso for hierarchical interactions,to identify important mixture components associated with birth weight,which were then *** observed that 8 of the 18 measured metals were retained by elastic net regression,with five metals(vanadium,manganese,iron,cesium,and barium)showing negative associations with Z-scores for birth weight and three metals(cobalt,zinc,and strontium)showing positive *** replication set,associations remained significant for vanadium(β=-0.035;95%confidence interval[CI],-0.059 to0.010),cobalt(β=-0.073;95%CI,0.049 to 0.097),and zinc(β=-0.040;95%CI,0.016 to 0.065)after Bonferroni *** additionally identified and replicated a single pairwise interaction between iron and copper exposure on birth weight(P<0.001).Using a two-stage analysis,we identified and replicated individual metals and additional pairwise interactions-associated birth *** approach could be used in other studies estimating the effect of complex mixtures on human health.

ABSTRACT:Antibiotic exposure during pregnancy may affect the neurodevelopment of children,but biomonitoring-based population studies on this class of new pollutants are *** conducted a prospective birth cohort study of 2860 mother−child pairs,measured the urinary concentrations of 41 antibiotics and their two metabolites over three trimesters,and assessed children’s autism spectrum disorder(ASD)symptoms at 3 years of *** examined the associations between prenatal antibiotic exposure and children’s ASD *** least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression screened for Tetracycline and Ofloxacin as important predictors of ASD *** Poisson regression models revealed that maternal Tetracycline exposure throughout pregnancy increased the risk of ASD symptoms(RR:1.66,95%CI:1.14,2.40).Maternal Tetracycline exposure during the first(RR:1.74,95%CI:1.13,2.68)and third trimesters(RR:1.86,95%CI:1.16,3.00)increased the risk of ASD symptoms in boys,and Ofloxacin exposure during the first trimester(RR:1.47,95%CI:1.07,2.02)increased the risk of ASD symptoms in *** dose-dependent relationships between prenatal antibiotic exposure and ASD symptoms were validated by restricted cubic *** exposure to Tetracycline and Ofloxacin may increase the risk of ASD symptoms in children,and the first and third trimesters might be the key windows.

Maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy and reproductive health in children： a review of epidemiological studies

Maternal cigarette smoking may affect the intrauterine hormonal environment during pregnancy and this early fetal exposure may have detrimental effects on the future trajectory of reproductive health. In this review, we discuss the epidemiological literature on the association between prenatal exposure to maternal cigarette smoking and several aspects of reproductive health. The literature points towards an increased risk of the urogenital malformation cryptorchidism, but a potential protective effect on the risk of hypospadias in sons following prenatal cigarette smoking exposure. Studies on sexual maturation find a tendency towards accelerated pubertal development in exposed boys and girls. In adult life, prenatally exposed men have impaired semen quality compared with unexposed individuals, but an influence on fecundability, that is, the biological ability to reproduce, is less evident. We found no evidence to support an association between prenatal cigarette smoking exposure and testicular cancer. Among adult daughters, research is sparse and inconsistent, but exposure to cigarette smoking in utero may decrease fecundability. In conclusion, prenatal exposure to cigarette smoking may cause some long-term adverse effects on the reproductive health.

Pulmonary hypertension in extremely low birth weight infants:characteristics and outcomes

Background:To determine the characteristics and outcomes of pulmonary arterial hypertension(PAH)in extremely low birth weight(ELBW)***:A retrospective case-control study of all ELBW infants admitted to a level III neonatal intensive care unit(NICU)between January 1,2003 and December 31,***:During the study period,450 ELBW infants were admitted.6.4%(29/450)were diagnosed with PAH and were matched to 26 *** mean gestational age of infants with PAH and their controls were similar[24.5±1.3 vs.24.9±1.8 weeks(P=0.26)];however the cases were smaller at birth than were controls[640.7±119.5 vs.727.0±184.5 g(P=0.04)].The diagnosis of PAH was made at a mean postnatal age of 131.8±53.7 *** with PAH had a higher rate of intrauterine exposure to illicit maternal drug use[12/29(41%)vs.1/25(4%);P=0.001],a longer duration of initial mechanical ventilation[74.9±28.3 vs.59.1±27.8 days;(P=0.04)],a higher incidence of severe BPD[23/29(79%)vs.13/26(50%);P=0.02],and a greater NICU mortality rate[12/29(41%)vs.4/26(15%);P=0.04].Conclusion:PAH in ELBW infants is associated with maternal illicit drug use in pregnancy,longer exposure to mechanical ventilation,severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia and a significant increase in early mortality.

Evaluation of spermatogenesis and fertility in F1 male rats after in utero and neonatal exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields

Has Sperm Count Declined in the General Male Danish Population during the Last Several Decades?A Study on the Relation of Sperm Count and Birth Year

It has been hypothesized that during the last several decades human sperm count has declined because of prenatal exposure to environmental chemicals. We examined the relation between semen quality and birth year among 8608 men born from 1922 to 1971 and who from 1968 to 1992 consulted 4 Danish medical centers because of barren marriage. Data were obtained from medical records and by a postal questionnaire to a subset of the population. The sperm concentration was significantly declining with increasing year of birth in 2 of the 4 centers, but this association disappeared when confounders were adjusted for. Within the subset of men born during 1955~1970 comprising 36% of the entire population we revealed a decrease of the average sperm concentration by 1.6 million /ml (95% CI:0.7~2.5) per one advancing year of *** finding was consistent across all the 4 centers and robust to adjustment for effects of calendar period, season and duration of sexual abstinence. Effects of age were accounted for by restriction of the sample to men between 20 and 45 years. The findings are compatible with environmental impact in the prenatal period after 1955 but are far from unequivocal evidence that the sperm count in the general male Danish population has changed during the past decades.
