Identification of flow regimes and determination of the boundaries for magnetized fluidized bed with Geldart-B particles

The magnetized fluidized bed(MFB)with Geldart-B particles exhibits many distinct flow regimes depend-ing on the magnetic field intensity(H)and gas velocity(U_(g)).The identification of these regimes was reviewed for the MFB with magnetizable particles and that with binary admixture of magnetizable and nonmagnetizable particles.Meanwhile,methods for determining the boundaries between two adjacent flow regimes were clarified.The MFB state was found to depend not only on H and Ug but also on their application sequence(i.e.,operation mode)within certain operating zones.The dependence feature arose from that the MFB therein could have different equilibrium states for the same combination of H and Ug.Furthermore,such a polymorphic characteristic of the MFB was revealed to result from the internal friction among the particles that were in unfluidized/packed state.Many of the MFB states were demon-strated to be in metastable equilibrium.Nevertheless,they differed significantly from the metastates well-known in the discipline of physical chemistry,such as supercooling and superheated.In fact,they belonged to the amorphous/glass state.This review will deepen our hydrodynamic understanding of the MFB and further promote its commercial application in the chemical and biochemical industries.

The current Internet has evolved during the last decade to a global provider of diverse applications. However, the underlying structure of routing and addressing has not evolved in the same pace and is somewhat inflexible. How to provide diverse routing services, support emerging communication paradigms based on limited and definite network resources has become an urgent challenge. This paper investigates the adaptive matching between routing and application through network function decomposition and composition, and proposes a polymorphic routing model to support diverse applications and emerging communication paradigms. The model splits complex routing functions into its constituents, and derives customized routing mechanisms supporting various applications by composing the routing constituents. The derivation process is modeled as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), and a polymorphic derivation algorithm is also proposed to derive customized routing instances for diverse applications. The model enables the network to self-adjust routing services dynamically to adapt to the different requirements of applications, supports coexistence of multiple routing modes and communication paradigms, and provides a feasible solution for the network compatibility and evolvement. We describe the key design and demonstrate the feasibility of polymorphic derivation by simulations. We also present case studies that demonstrate key functionalities the polymorphic routing model enables.

Echinochloa phyllopogon proliferation seriously threatens rice production worldwide. We combined a restriction-site associated DNA(RAD) approach with Illumina DNA sequencing for rapid and mass discovery of simple sequence repeat(SSR) and single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP) markers for E. phyllopogon. RAD tags were generated from the genomic DNA of two E. phyllopogon plants, and sequenced to produce 5197.7 Mb and 5242.9 Mb high quality sequences, respectively. The GC content of E. phyllopogon was 45.8%, which is high for monocots. In total, 4710 putative SSRs were identified in 4132 contigs, which permitted the design of PCR primers for E. phyllopogon. Most repeat motifs among the SSRs identified were dinucleotide(>82%), and most of these SSRs were four motif-repeats(>75%). The most frequent motif was AT, accounting for 36.3%-37.2%, followed by AG and AC. In total, 78 putative polymorphic SSR loci were found. A total of 49,179 SNPs were discovered between the two samples of E. phyllopogon, 67.1% of which were transversions and 32.9% were transitions. We used eight SSRs to study the genetic diversity of four E. phyllopogon populations collected from rice fields in China and all eight loci tested were polymorphic.

polymorphic computing is widely seen as next evolutionary step in designing advanced computing architectures. This paper presents a brief history of reconfigurable and polymorphic computing, and highlights the recent trends and challenges. A novel polymorphic architecture featuring programmable memory event triggers and a new concept of control agents is proposed. This architecture can provide dynamic load balancing, distributed control, separated memory and processing fabrics, configurable memory blocks, and task-optimized computation.

Phase transition and dynamics of iron under ramp wave compression

The ramp wave compression experiments of iron with different thicknesses were performed on the magnetically driven ramp loading device CQ-4.Numerical simulations of this process were done with Hayes multi-phase equation of state (H-MEOS) and dynamic equations of phase transition.The calculated results of H-MEOS are in good agreement with those of shock phase transition,but are different from those under ramp wave compression.The reason for this is that the bulk modulus of the material in the Hayes model and the wave velocity are considered constant.Shock compression is a jump from the initial state to the final state,and the sound speed is related to the slope of the Rayleigh line.However,ramp compression is a continuous process,and the bulk modulus is no longer a constant but a function of pressure and temperature.Based on Mumaghan equation of state,the first-order correction of the bulk modulus on pressure in the Hayes model was carried out.The numerical results of the corrected H-MEOS agree well with those of pure iron in both ramp and shock compression phase transition experiments.The calculated results show that the relaxation time of iron is about 30 ns and the phase transition pressure is about 13 GPa.There are obvious differences between the isentropic and adiabatic process in terms of pressure-specific volume and temperature-pressure.The fluctuation of the sound speed after 13 GPa is caused by the phase transition.

Transposable element-based molecular markers can be utilized to investigate genetic diversity and to create genetic linkage maps.In this study,Class I and class II transposons were employed to obtain a comparative account of genetic diversity between wild and cultivated barley genotypes.Three types of PCR-based techniques were used:IMP(Inter MITE Polymorphism),IRAP(Inter-Retrotransposon Amplified Polymorphism)and REMAP(Retrotransposon-Microsatellite Amplified Polymorphism).Specific primer pairs for IMP,IRAP,and REMAP detected a total of 200 bands with an average of 20 bands per marker.The mean polymorphic information content(PIC)and discrimination power(D)values in all 47 genotypes from these three types of transposon-based polymorphisms were 0.910 and0.935,respectively.Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic mean(UPGMA)-based cluster analysis classified all 47 genotypes,both wild and cultivated,into separate groups consistent with their geographical origins.Sequencing followed by chromosome location of polymorphic bands enables precise gene introgression from wild gene pool to cultivated barley.The highly polymorphic nature of these marker systems makes them suitable for use in varietal identification and MAS-based breeding programs in barley and other cereals.

EST sequences of Mentha piperita available in the public domain(NCBI) were exploited to develop SSR markers. A total of 1316 ESTs were assembled into 155 contigs and 653 singletons and of these, 110 sequences were found to contain 130 SSRs, with a frequency of1 SSR/3.4 kb. Dinucleotide repeat SSRs were most frequent(72.3%) with the AG/CT(43.8%)repeat motif followed by AT/AT(16.2%). Primers were successfully designed for 68SSR-containing sequences(62.0%). The 68 primers amplified 13 accessions of M. piperita and 54 produced clear amplicons of the expected size. Of these 54, 33(61%) were found to be polymorphic among M. piperita accessions, showing from 2 to 4 alleles with an average of2.33 alleles/SSR, and the polymorphic information content(PIC) value varied between 0.13 and 0.51(average 0.25). All the amplified SSRs showed transferability among four different species of Mentha, with a highest in Mentha arvensis(87.0%) and minimum in Mentha citrata(37.0%). The newly developed SSRs markers were found to be useful for diversity analysis, as they successfully differentiated among species and accessions of Mentha.

The high growth-stimulating effect of plant extract has urged the plant biotechnologists to use natural supplements in the culture media instead of synthetic phytohormones. We advocated the effect of sprouted sorghum extract(SSE) on emergence, in vitro acclimatization, and genetic fidelity in coleoptile derived callus of indica rice variety ADT36. The use of SSE with Murashige Skoog medium efficiently acclimatized the root and shoot apical systems. A higher mat and seminal roots(3.4 g biomass) with an efficient shoot primordium elongation were observed with an increase in the concentration of SSE. Seeds treated with SSE medium showed higher germination and earlier coleoptile maturation about 48 h compared to untreated seeds, and there was a higher expression of e EF-1α with an increase in coleoptile length. B5 medium was effective on inducing embryogenic and nodular callus from 3-day-old coleoptile with 3.0 mg/L 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and further proliferated effectively with 0.8 mg/L kinetin with a fresh weight of 180 mg. Highly significant regeneration was observed with combination of 2.5 mg/L 6-benzylamino purine and 3.0 mg/L α-naphthaleneacetic acid. The metabolic and genetic profiles of in vitro and directly cultivated plants were the same, examined through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD), inter-simple sequence repeat(ISSR) and R-ISSR(combination of RAPD and ISSR) markers, respectively, and thus confirming the significant efficacy of the SSE incorporated medium. Disarmed T-DNA was transformed to coleoptile derived callus through Agrobacterium tumefaciens LBA4404 and confirmed by GUS assay. The T-DNA integration was confirmed by DNA blot analysis using DNA from transient GUS-expressed explants. Thus, SSE can be used as a natural and organic supplement for organogenesis and efficient acclimatizations of shoot and root apical meristems in regenerated plants.
