Biochemical or clinical changes of hyperandrogenism are important elements of polycystic ovary syndrome （PCOS）. There is currently no consensus on the definition and diagnostic criteria of hyperandrogenism in PCOS. The aim of this study was to investigate the complex symptoms of hyperandrogenic disorders and the correlations between metabolism and hyperandrogenism in patients with PCOS from an outpatient reproductive medicine clinic in China. We conducted a case control study of 125 PCOS patients and 130 controls to evaluate differences in body mass index （BMI）, total testosterone （TT）, modified Ferriman-Gallwey hirsutism score, sex hormone binding globulin （SHBG）, homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance （HOMA-IR） and free androgen index （FAI） between PCOS patients and controls and subgroups of PCOS. The prevalence of acne and hirsutism did not differ significantly between the hyperandrogenic and non-hyperandrogenic subgroup. Patients with signs of hyper- androgenism had significantly higher BMI （P 〈 0.05）, but differences in TT, SHBG, FAI and waist/hip ratio were insignificant. The odds ratio of overweight was calculated for all PCOS patients. Our results suggest that PCOS patients with high BMI tend to have functional disorders of androgen excess; therefore, BMI may be a strong pre-dictor of hyperandrogenism in PCOS.

Effects of electroacupuncture and Chinese kidney-nourishing medicine on polycystic ovary syndrome in obese patients

OBJECTIVE： To explore the effect of electroacu- puncture and Chinese kidney-nourishing medicine on insulin （INS）, adiponectin （APN）, leptin （LEP）, and glucolipid metabolism of obese patients with polycystic ovary syndrome （PCOS）. METHODS： Sixty-seven obese PCOS patients were randomly divided into two groups. Thirty-three pa- tients in the acupuncture-medicine group were treated three times a week with electroacupunc- ture at the Tianshu （ST 25）, Zhongwan （CV ] 2）, Qi- hai （CV 6）, Sanyinjiao （SP 6）, Geshu （BL 17）, and Cil-iao （BL 32） acupoints. They drug, Tiankui capsule, for 3 treatment. Point-taking and also took the Chinese months as a course of treatment in the elec- troacupuncture group of 34 patients was the same as those in the acupuncture-medicine group. We observed and compared the changes in the obesi- ty-related indexes of body weight （BW）, body mass index （BMI）, and waist-hip ratio （WHR）, as well as fasting plasma glucose （FPG）, fasting insulin （FINS）, APN, and LER RESULTS： BW, BMI, WHR, and FINS decreased and insulin sensitivity index （ISI） and APN were higher in the acupuncture-medicine group than in the electroacupuncture group （P〈0.01）. There was no obvious difference in LEP between the two groups （P〉0.05）. CONCLUSION： Acupuncture combined with medi- cine is better than just electroacupuncture for obese PCOS patients by improving obesity-related indexes, insulin sensitivity, and APN level. This indi- cates that acupuncture-medicine therapy is worth clinical popularization.

polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a highly familial and heritable endocrine disorder. Over half of the daughters born to women with PCOS may eventually develop their own PCOS-related symptoms. Progress in the treatment of PCOS is currently hindered by the complexity of its clinical manifestations and incomplete knowledge of its etiopathogenesis. Various animal models, including experimentally induced, naturally occurring, and spontaneously arising ones, have been established to emulate a wide range of phenotypical and pathological traits of human PCOS. These studies have led to a paradigm shift in understanding the genetic, developmental, and evolutionary origins of this disorder. Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests that animal models are useful in evaluating state-of-the-art drugs and treatments for PCOS. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of recent studies of PCOS in animal models, highlighting the power of these disease models in understanding the biology of PCOS and aiding high-throughput approaches.

OBJECTIVE:To study serum visfatin levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS)grouped by Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)*** study the correlations of serum visfatin levels with homeostatic model assessment insulin resistance(HOMA-IR),fasting plasma glucose(FPG),fasting insulin(FINS),body mass index(BMI),testosterone(T),total cholesterol(TC),and triglycerides(TG).METHODS:Two hundred and twelve PCOS patients were placed into the following TCM pattern subgroups:Kidney-Yang deficiency(KYD)group,Spleen-Yang deficiency(SYD)group,stagnant Liver-Qi transforming into heat(SLQTH)group,and Kidney-Yin deficiency(KYIND)*** correlations between serum visfatin levels and HOMA-IR,FPG,FINS,BMI,T,TC,andTG were ***:Of all patients with PCOS,there were 82in the KYD group(38.6%),67 in the SYD group(31.6%),37 in the SLQTH group(17.5%),and 26 in the KYIND group(12.3%).Visfatin levels in all PCOS subgroups were higher than those in the control group(P0.05).The SYD group had higher levels of FINS and HOMA-IR compared with the KYD,SLQTH,and KYIND groups(P<0.05).In all subgroups,after controlling for BMI,TG,TC,and age,visfatin was positively correlated with FINS(r=0.197,P=0.015)and HOMA-IR(r=0.173,P=0.033),and was not correlated with ***:KYD and SYD patterns are most common in PCOS *** visfatin is a common pathophysiologic manifestation in PCOS *** SYD group had the highest levels of visfatin,and visfatin was positively correlated with FINS and HOMA-IR.

Objective:To evaluate the effect of electro-acupuncture(EA)in infertile patients with phlegmdampness polycystic ovary syndrome-insulin resistance(PCOS-IR).Methods:Seventy-six PCOS-IR patients who underwnet in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer(IVF-ET)were equally assigned to two groups according to a random digital table:the EA group and the control group,with 38 cases in each *** undergoing IVF,the two groups were treated with EA or pseudo-acupuncture,respectively,for 3 menstrual *** intervention was 25 min twice a week until the day of oocyte *** selected acupoints were Zhongwan(RN 12),Tianshu(ST 25),Daheng(SP 15),Daimai(GB 26),Qihai(CV 6),Guanyuan(CV 4),and bilateral points including Xuehai(SP 10),Fenglong(ST 40),Zusanli(ST 36),and Yinlingquan(SP 9).Evaluation of phlegm-dampness syndrome score and IR score were carried out before and after ***,the number of oocytes retrieved,transplantable embryo rate,high-quality embryo rate,clinical pregnancy rate and live birth rate were compared between the two ***-time polymerase chain reaction analysis was used to monitor the m RNA expression of the insulin receptor substrate(IRS-1),phosphatidylinositiol 3-kinase(PI3 K)and glucose transport factor 4(GLUT4)in ovarian granulosa ***:EA treatment reduced the phlegm-dampness syndrome score as well as the IR scores compared with the control group(P0.05).Moreover,the transplantable embryo rate[49.0%(284/580)vs.41.9%(273/652)],high-quality embryo rate[36.6%(104/284)vs.27.8%(76/273)],and live birth rate[50%(19/38)vs.26.3%(10/38)]in the EA group were significantly higher than in the control group(P<0.05).Gene expression analyses revealed significantly elevated IRS-1,PI3 K and GLUT4 m RNA in ovarian granulosa cells of the EA group compared with the control group(P<0.05).Conclusions:EA may ameliora

polycystic ovary syndrome （PCOS） is the most common endocrine and metabolic disorder of women, with complex pathogenesis and heterogeneous manifestations. Professor Jin Yu recently wrote an article entitled ＂Proposal of Diagnosis and Diagnostic Classification of PCOS in Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine.＂ From this, the Obstetrics and Gynecology branches of the Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine and the China Association of Chinese Medicine collaborated with the Gynecology branch of the Chinese Association for Research and Advancement of Chinese Medicine to draft a report on the consensus of criteria for the diagnosis and classification of PCOS in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine. The diagnosis for PCOS includes all three features：（1） oligo-ovulation or anovulation; （2） clinical and/or laboratory evidence of hyperandrogenism; （3） PCOS is classified into four types： types la, Ib, Ila, and lib. syndrome differentiation types for PCOS in traditional Chinese medicine are as follows： Kidney deficiency with phlegm blockage syndrome, Kidney Yin deficiency with phlegm blockage and blood stasis syndrome, and Kidney deficiency with Liver Qi stagnation syndrome.

Objective To investigate the relationship and potential pathways between metal(loid)exposure and the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS)in women of childbearing *** This case-control study included 200 patients with PCOS(cases)and 896 non-PCOS controls with the age of 25-37 *** concentrations of 29 metal(loid)s in the follicular fluid(FF)and clinical indicators in the serum were measured in all *** regression analysis and mediation analysis were conducted to evaluate the associations between metal(loid)exposure and PCOS risk and investigate the possible roles of clinical indicators,*** Logistic regression analysis revealed an association between high copper levels in FF and increased PCOS risk(highest *** quartile:adjusted odds ratio=2.94,95%confidence interval:1.83-4.72).A high luteinizing hormone/follicle-stimulating hormone ratio and elevated levels of testosterone and anti-Müllerian hormone(AMH)were strongly associated with increased PCOS risk induced by high copper *** mediation analysis indicated a mediating effect of AMH in the association between copper exposure and PCOS *** Copper may affect PCOS risk through the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis,mediated by *** exposure and internal AMH levels are important indicators for early warning of PCOS development.
