Objective:To analyze the total phenolic content,DNA protecting and radical scavenging activity of ethanolic leaf extracts of three Lamiaceae plants,*** malabarica(***),Leucas aspera(***)and Ocimum basilicum(***).Methods:The total polyphenols and flavonoids were analyzed in the ethanolic leaf extracts of the lamiaceae *** determine the DNA protecting activity,various concentrations of the plant extracts were prepared and treated on cultured HepG2 human lung cancer *** pretreated cells were exposed to H_2O_2to induce DNA damage through oxidative *** assay was done and the tail length of individual comets was *** oxide and superoxide anion scavenging activities of lamiaceae plants were ***:Among the three plant extracts,the highest amount of total phenolic content was found in ***(189.33 mg/g),whereas *** showed high levels of flavonoids(10.66 mg/g).*** also showed high levels of DNA protecting(85%)and radical scavenging ***:The results of this study shows that bioactive phenols present in lamiaceae plants may prevent carcinogenesis through scavenging free radicals and inhibiting DNA damage.

Changes in carbohydrate, phenols, free amino acids and endogenous hormones in middle scales of Lilium davidii *** bulbs during the 101 days storage at 2, 6 and 10°C in moist sawdust were studied. The results indicated that asthe storage time increased and the storage temperature delined, contents of starch and abscisic acid (ABA) decreasedmarkedly, and the level of total soluble sugar, phenols, gibberellic acid (GA3) and indole acetic acid (IAA) increasedsharply. In the first 34 days, the contents of the above substances changed most actively. Correlation analysis revealedthat the increase in content of total soluble sugar and phenols was respectively caused by activation of amylase andphenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). During the storage, the content of free amino acids decreased, and the level ofarginine was the highest and changed most remarkably. According to the results of stepwise regression analysis and pathanalysis, we could primarily conclude that the metabolism of carbohydrates, phenols and free amino acids in the middlescales may be mainly regulated by endogenous GA3.

The harm of the phenolic compounds to environment was discussed in this paper. The progress of international methods for phenolic compounds was reviewed from 1938 to the end of 1995. The references dealt mainly with the progress of study on optical determining methods, e.g. visible , UV , derivative , fluorescent , infrared absorptive , atomic absorptive photometries for phenolic compounds in waste water, and application of the above mentioned methods in environmental monitoring.

Efficient conversion of lignin to fine chemicals and biofuel become more and more attractive in biorefinery. In this work, we used a series of silica-alumina catalysts （i.e., SiO2-Al2O3, HY, Hβ, and HZSM-5） to degrade lignin into arenes and phenols. The relationship between the catalyst structure and lignin depolymerization performance was investigated. The results showed that both acidity and pore size of the catalyst could influence the conversion of lignin. In the volatilizable product, phenols were identified as the main phenolic monomers via gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. SIO2-Al2O3 was the most efficient catalyst, giving 90.96% degree of conversion, 12.91% yield of phenols, and 2.41% yield of arenes in ethanol at 280℃ for 4 h. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ^1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis demonstrated that deoxygenation and alkylation occurred in this process. The effect of solvents was also investigated and the results showed that ethanol was the most efficient solvent.

Diatomite is a kind of natural low-cost mineral material. It has a number of unique physical properties and has been widely used as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment. This study was conducted to investigate the aerobic biodegradation of coal gasification wastewater with and without diatomite addition. Experimental results indicated that diatomite added in the activated sludge system could promote the biomass and also enhance the performance of the sludge settling. The average mixed-liquor volatile suspended solids （MLVSS） is increased from 4055 mg.L^-1 to 4518 mg.L^-1 and the average settling volume （SV） are changed only from 45.9% to 47.1%. Diatomite additive could enhance the efficiency of chemical oxygen demand （COD） and total phenols removal from the wastewater. The COD removal increased from 73.3% to near 80% and the total phenols removal increased from 81.4% to 85.8%. The mechanisms of the increase of biomass and pollutants removal may correlates to the improvement of bioavailability and sludge settlement characteristics by diatomite added. Micrograph of the sludge in the diatomite-activated sludge system indicated that the diatomite added could be the carrier of the microbe and also affect the biomass and pollutant removal.

The present study aimed to estimate the individual and total phenols and antioxidant activity of the aqueous and alcoholic extracts of three premium quality date varieties (Khalas, Sukkari and Ajwa) from Saudi Arabia. In general, water extract has shown significantly higher contents of total phenols than alcoholic, especially in Ajwa (455.88 and 245.66 mg/100 g respectively). However, phenolic profile indicated that Sukkari contained the highest rutin concentration (8.10 mg/kg), whereas, catechin was approximately the same in Sukkari and Ajwa (7.50 and 7.30 mg/kg respectively). Khalas was the highest variety content of caffeic acid (7.40 mg/kg). A significant difference has indicated among extracts and varieties in suppressing lipid peroxidation. Sukkari and Ajwa have reduced the oxidation with 50% at lower concentration in water extract than alcoholic (0.63, 0.70 and 1.60, 1.43 mg/ml respectively). Furthermore, high positive linear correlation was found between total phenols in water (r = 0.96) and alcohol (r = 0.85) extracts and inhibition of lipid oxidation activity. The compounds responsible for the activity were catechin (r = 0.96), and rutin (r = 0.74) in water extract, whereas this correlation decreased in alcoholic extract (r = 0.66) for catechin and very weak (r = 0.38) for rutin. No correlation was found between caffeic acid and lipid peroxidation in both extracts. Similar significant results were obtained with DPPH test, except with Sukari, which has shown no difference between aqueous and alcoholic extracts (4.30, 4.10 mg/ml respectively).

There is pressure from consumers about exchanging synthetic for natural dyes in foods. This review aimed to expose the potential of blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) as a source of natural dye, associated with its properties of functional food. Blueberry is a fruit plant natural from temperate climate, rich in phenolic compounds. The properties of phenolic compounds can be attributed to its ability to capture free radicals, deactivating or eliminating them from the body. Anthocyanins are flavonoid phenolic compounds responsible for color of fruits, flowers and vegetables. Blueberry is rich in anthocyanins, being its content more affected by genotype than by climatic or environmental factors. Brazil has the potential to assume an important position in the worldwide market of this fruit, both in natura and as byproducts, whose main destinations are populations from regions with higher income and educational level, as the North America and Europe. Due to the importance of blueberry as a source of natural pigments, as well as its high value while associated with functional food, it is important to improve extraction and stabilization processes of anthocyanins from blueberry fruits. Researches should focus on the technical viability and cost reduction in the extraction of this pigment. Pioneer studies with blueberry have been conducted in Brazil, but the intensification of researches will allow yield maximization, increased levels of anthocyanins in fruits, and compound stability after extraction. Another focus should be the use of these natural pigments in order to replace those currently used.

Improving the Nutritional Values of Wheat and Rice Crackers by Using Cauliflowers

The present study described the enhancement of the nutritional values of wheat and rice crackers by adding cauliflowers. The results showed that 25% - 75% cauliflower replaced in crackers increased the consumer acceptability, nutritional value, antioxidant activity, minerals, and anti-carcinogenic effect. Moreover, it also improved the functional properties and sensory quality. The results revealed that the raw samples of cauliflower recorded the highest value of moisture, ash, protein and fiber 89.29%, 7.68%, 19.04% and 10.18% on dry weight, respectively. The crackers formula of cauliflower: wheat 75%:25% and cauliflower: rice 75%:25% recorded the highest values in ash, protein, fat, and fiber. The data showed that increasing cauliflower percentage in crackers formula causing a parallel increase in all determined chemical composition. Cauliflower samples exhibited the highest antioxidant activity (92.94%). Also, crackers samples of cauliflower: wheat 75%:25% crackers, recorded 57.6% for antioxidant activity. The highest values of phenols and flavonoids for cauliflower cracker samples (cauliflower: wheat 75%:25% and cauliflower: rice 50%:50%) have increased up to (5.75 and 5.49) respectively. The results showed that the higher mineral content is the sulfur (635.96 mg/100g) in raw cauliflower, while (1.00 mg/100g, and 0.99 mg/100g sulfur content) in wheat and rice respectively. Moreover, the result found that as the cauliflower percentage increases, the minerals contents especially sulfur increase. Furthermore, the cauliflower displayed moderate activity for human hepatocellular carcinoma, colon cancer and intestinal epithelial barrier treatment, (IC50 = 183.4 ± 6.8, 175.8 ± 7.1 and 207.2 ± 8.5 μg/mL, respectively). In Vitro Anti-Proliferative Activity of Curcuma Angustifolia and Estimation of Bioactive Compounds for Antioxidant Activity

The present work deals with preliminary in-vitro studies to validate the traditional claims of medicinal properties in consuming Curcuma flowers to make the person less susceptible to diseases and the estimation of bioactive compounds responsible for antioxidant activity present. The anti-proliferative activity of aqueous extracts of budding flowers, leaves, full bloomed flowers and mixture of all parts of Curcuma angustifolia was studied using MDCK, Vero and HeLa cell lines. The inhibitory activity in all the three cell lines was found to be dose dependent. The extract of leaves and budding flowers exhibited higher inhibitions in MDCK and Vero cells while the full bloomed flowers extract showed higher inhibitory activities in HeLa cells. The bioactive compounds--total phenolics content ranged from 56.96 mg GAE/100 gm to 86.77 mg GAE/100 gm which was highest in full bloomed flowers, total flavonoids and the free radical scavenging activity content ranged from 84.74 mg CE/100 g to 166.11 mg CE/100 g and 43.91 mg to 64.02 mg AEAC/100 gm respectively, with maximum content in budding flowers. The result showed potential anti-proliferative and antioxidant properties that substantiate the belief of the indigenous people to include the plant in their dietary habits which could be exploited for use in preparation of herbal drugs and supplements.
