Denervation-induced skeletal muscle atrophy can potentially cause the decline in the quality of life of patients and an increased risk of mortality.Complex pathophysiological mechanisms with dynamic alterations have been documented in skeletal muscle atrophy resulting from innervation loss.Hence,an in-depth comprehension of the key mechanisms and molecules governing skeletal muscle atrophy at varying stages,along with targeted treatment and protection,becomes essential for effective atrophy management.Our preliminary research categorizes the skeletal muscle atrophy process into four stages using microarray analysis.This review extensively discusses the pathways and molecules potentially implicated in regulating the four stages of denervation and muscle atrophy.Notably,drugs targeting the reactivare oxygen species stage and the inflammation stage assume critical roles.Timely intervention during the initial atrophy stages can expedite protection against skeletal muscle atrophy.Additionally,pharmaceutical intervention in the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway associated with atrophy and autophagy lysosomes can effectively slow down skeletal muscle atrophy.Key molecules within this stage encompass MuRF1,MAFbx,LC3II,p62/SQSTM1,etc.This review also compiles a profile of drugs with protective effects against skeletal muscle atrophy at distinct postdenervation stages,thereby augmenting the evidence base for denervation-induced skeletal muscle atrophy treatment.

Pien Tze Huang(PTH)was documented as an imperial prescription composed of Notoginseng Radix,Calculus Bovis,Snake Gallbladder,and Musk.It is famous in China and Asian countries due to its excellent effects in heat clearing,detoxifying,swelling reduction,and pain relieving.Modern pharmacological studies demonstrate that PTH shows excellent effects against various inflammatory diseases,liver diseases,and cancers.This review summaries the pharmacological effects,clinical applications,and mainchemical components of PTH.More importantly,its potential quality markers(Q-markers)were then analyzed based on the“five principles”of Q-markers under the guidance of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory,including transfer and traceability,specificity,efficacy,compatibility,and measurability.As a result,ginsenosides Rb1,ginsenoside Rg1,ginsenoside Rd,ginsenoside Re,notoginsenoside R1,dencichine,bilirubin,biliverdin,taurocholic acid,and muscone are considered as the Q-markers of PTH.These findings will provide guidance and assistance for the construction of a quality control system for PTH.

Ginsenoside Rb3(G-Rb3)is one of the primary active compounds isolated from Panax ginseng Meyer,which belongs to protopanaxadiol ginsenosides(PPD).Based on the structure-activity relationship(SAR)of ginsenosides,the pentose structure of G-Rb3 limited itself to possess more pharmacological activity to a certain extent.However,pharmacokinetics show that G-Rb3 is processed through deglycosylation in the intestinal tract and converted into more active rare saponins,such as Compound K,F2,etc.A series of studies focused on neuroprotection and the cardiovascular system demonstrating its therapeutic potentials,which was achieved by diminishing oxidative stress and apoptosis.Therefore,more systematic and in-depth studies are needed to complete the pharmaceutical value and to promote its clinical applications.This article highlights the multiple pharmacological effects and mechanisms of G-Rb3 and prospects for its development.

Celosia L. is richly distributed in China and there are about 60 species in the world. The chemical constituents of Celosia L. include flavonoids, triterpenoid saponins, steroids, organic acids, and cyclic peptides. Which have a variety of effects such as antimicrobial, hepatoprotective and antitumour. To provide a scientific foundation for the subsequent phase of research and development for Celosia L., 30 years of pertinent global literature is summarized, analyzed, and categorized. An overview of 75 chemical constituents, pharmacological activities, and clinical applications is provided.

Tripterygium hypoglaucum(Levl.)Hutch.(THH),which belongs to Tripterygium genus of Celastraceae family,is widely used as the common Chinese herbal medicine.It has been reported that the chemical constituents of T.hypoglaucum include monoterpenoids,sesquiterpenoids,diterpenoids,triterpenoids,sesquiterpene alkaloids,flavonoids,anthraquinone derivatives,et al.These compounds showed a wide range of bioactivities,such as anti-inflammatory,anti-cancer,immunosuppressive,anti-HIV,anti-fertility and insecticidal activities.In this paper,we summarized the chemical constituents and pharmacological activities of T.hypoglaucum to provide a reference for its further research and developement.

Durio zibethnus is mainly distributed in Southeast Asia.Traditional Chinese medicine believes that durian shells have the effects of clearing heat and purging fire,nourishing yin and moisturizing dryness.Therefore,it is often used as a pharmaceutic food in the Chinese folk to assist treating diseases.At present,the chemical constituents isolated from durian shell include phenolic acids,phenolic glycosides,flavonoids,coumarins,triterpenes,simple glycosides and other compounds.Modern pharmacological studies show that durian shell has many pharmacological activities,such as antioxidant,antiinflammatory,regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism.The chemical composition and pharmacological effects of durian shells are summarized in order to provide references for the further research and application of durian shell.

Chloranthus japonicus Sieb.,belonging to the Chloranthaceae family,is a perennial herb widely distributed in East Asia,including China,Japan and Korea.Previous phytochemical studies have revealed the presence of a variety of secondary metabolites,such as terpenoids,phenylpropanoids and phenolic derivatives.Among them,sesquiterpenes and dimers,as the main chemical constituents and research focus in this plant,have a variety of biological activities.This review mainly focuses on the research progress of pharmacological activity of sesquiterpenes in this plant,which will lay the foundation for the development and utilization of its medicinal value in the future.
