Characterization of sulfide oxidation and Optimization of sulfate production by a thermophilic Paenibacillus naphthalenovorans LYH-3 isolated from sewage sludge composting

The sulfur-containing odor emitted from sludge composting could be controlled by sulfide oxidizing bacteria, yet mesophilic strains show inactivation during the thermophilic stage of composting. Aimed to investigate and characterize the thermotolerant bacterium that could oxidize sulfide into sulfate, a heterotrophic strain was isolated from sewage sludge composting and identified as Paenibacillus naphthalenovorans LYH-3. The effects of various environmental factors on sulfide oxidation capacities were studied to optimize the sulfate production, and the highest production rate (27.35%±0.86%) was obtained at pH 7.34, the rotation speed of 161.14 r/min, and the inoculation amount of 5.83%by employing BoxBehnken design. The results of serial sulfide substrates experiments indicated that strain LYH-3 could survive up to 400 mg/L of sulfide with the highest sulfide removal rate (88.79%±0.35%) obtained at 50 mg/L of sulfide. Growth kinetic analysis presented the maximum specific growth rateμm(0.5274 hr-1) after 22 hr cultivation at 50℃. The highest enzyme activities of sulfide quinone oxidoreductase (0.369±0.052 U/mg) and sulfur dioxygenase (0.255±0.014 U/mg) were both obtained at 40℃, and the highest enzyme activity of sulfite acceptor oxidoreductase (1.302±0.035 U/mg) was assessed at 50℃. The results indicated that P. naphthalenovorans possessed a rapid growth rate and efficient sulfide oxidation capacities under thermophilic conditions, promising a potential application in controlling sulfur-containing odors during the thermophilic stage of sludge composting.

Optimization Design of the Multi-Layer Cross-Sectional Layout of An Umbilical Based on the GA-GLM

Marine umbilical is one of the key equipment for subsea oil and gas exploitation,which is usually integrated by a great number of different functional components with multi-layers.The layout of these components directly affects manufacturing,operation and storage performances of the umbilical.For the multi-layer cross-sectional layout design of the umbilical,a quantifiable multi-objective Optimization model is established according to the operation and storage requirements.Considering the manufacturing factors,the multi-layering strategy based on contact point identification is introduced for a great number of functional components.Then,the GA-GLM global Optimization algorithm is proposed combining the genetic algorithm and the generalized multiplier method,and the selection operator of the genetic algorithm is improved based on the steepest descent method.Genetic algorithm is used to find the optimal solution in the global space,which can converge from any initial layout to the feasible layout solution.The feasible layout solution is taken as the initial value of the generalized multiplier method for fast and accurate solution.Finally,taking umbilicals with a great number of components as examples,the results show that the cross-sectional performance of the umbilical obtained by Optimization algorithm is better and the solution efficiency is higher.Meanwhile,the multi-layering strategy is effective and feasible.The design method proposed in this paper can quickly obtain the optimal multi-layer cross-sectional layout,which replaces the manual design,and provides useful reference and guidance for the umbilical industry.

Evolutionary computation is a rapidly evolving field and the related algorithms have been successfully used to solve various real-world Optimization problems.The past decade has also witnessed their fast progress to solve a class of challenging Optimization problems called high-dimensional expensive problems(HEPs).The evaluation of their objective fitness requires expensive resource due to their use of time-consuming physical experiments or computer simulations.Moreover,it is hard to traverse the huge search space within reasonable resource as problem dimension increases.Traditional evolutionary algorithms(EAs)tend to fail to solve HEPs competently because they need to conduct many such expensive evaluations before achieving satisfactory results.To reduce such evaluations,many novel surrogate-assisted algorithms emerge to cope with HEPs in recent years.Yet there lacks a thorough review of the state of the art in this specific and important area.This paper provides a comprehensive survey of these evolutionary algorithms for HEPs.We start with a brief introduction to the research status and the basic concepts of HEPs.Then,we present surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithms for HEPs from four main aspects.We also give comparative results of some representative algorithms and application examples.Finally,we indicate open challenges and several promising directions to advance the progress in evolutionary Optimization algorithms for HEPs.

Dragonfly Interaction Algorithm for Optimization of Queuing Delay in Industrial Wireless Networks

In industrial wireless networks,data transmitted from source to destination are highly repetitive.This often leads to the queuing of the data,and poor management of the queued data results in excessive delays,increased energy consumption,and packet loss.Therefore,a nature-inspired-based Dragonfly Interaction Optimization Algorithm(DMOA)is proposed for Optimization of the queue delay in industrial wireless networks.The term“interaction”herein used is the characterization of the“flying movement”of the dragonfly towards damselflies(female dragonflies)for mating.As a result,interaction is represented as the flow of transmitted data packets,or traffic,from the source to the base station.This includes each and every feature of dragonfly movement as well as awareness of the rival dragonflies,predators,and damselflies for the desired Optimization of the queue delay.These features are juxtaposed as noise and interference,which are further used in the calculation of industrial wireless metrics:latency,error rate(reliability),throughput,energy efficiency,and fairness for the Optimization of the queue delay.Statistical analysis,convergence analysis,the Wilcoxon test,the Friedman test,and the classical as well as the 2014 IEEE Congress of Evolutionary Computation(CEC)on the benchmark functions are also used for the evaluation of DMOA in terms of its robustness and efficiency.The results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed algorithm for both classical and benchmarking functions of the IEEE CEC 2014.Furthermore,the accuracy and efficacy of DMOA were demonstrated by means of the convergence rate,Wilcoxon testing,and ANOVA.Moreover,fairness using Jain’s index in queue delay Optimization in terms of throughput and latency,along with computational complexity,is also evaluated and compared with other algorithms.Simulation results show that DMOA exceeds other bio-inspired Optimization algorithms in terms of fairness in queue delay management and average packet loss.The proposed algorithm is also evaluated for the conflicting o

Design Optimization of a hexapod vibration isolation system for electro-optical payload

The electro-optical payloads on mobile platforms generally suffer undesirable vibrations generated by maneuvers and turbulence.These vibrations are in six degrees of freedom and cause line-of-sight jitters,resulting in image blurring and loss of tracking accuracy.In this paper,a Hexapod Vibration Isolation System(HVIS)is proposed and optimized to solve this problem.The Optimization aims to centralize and minimize the natural frequencies of HVIS,for expanding the vibration isolation bandwidth and improving the vibration isolation in the higher frequency band.Considering that the design space for HVIS is limited and interfered with the frames of the mobile platform,a non-collision algorithm is proposed and applied in the Optimization to obtain the feasible optimal design.The Optimization result shows that the natural frequency bandwidth has been reduced by 42.9%,and the maximum natural frequency is reduced by 30.2%.The prototypes of initial and optimal designs are manufactured and tested.Both simulated and experimental results demonstrate the validity of the Optimization,and the optimal design provides a maximum of 15 dB more isolation in rotation direction than the initial design.

Optimization of chemistry and process parameters for control of intermetallic formation in Mg sludges

Intermetallic formation in sludge during magnesium(Mg)melting,holding and high pressure die casting practices is a very important issue.But,very often it is overlooked by academia,original equipment manufacturers(OEM),metal ingot producers and even die casters.The aim of this study was to minimize the intermetallic formation in Mg sludge via the Optimization of the chemistry and process parameters.The Al8Mn5 intermetallic particles were identified by the microstructure analysis based on the Al and Mn ratio.The design of experiment(DOE)technique,Taguchi method,was employed to minimize the intermetallic formation in the sludge of Mg alloys with various chemical compositions of Al,Mn,Fe,and different process parameters,holding temperature and holding time.The sludge yield(SY)and intermetallic size(IS)was selected as two responses.The optimum combination of the levels in terms of minimizing the intermetallic formation were 9 wt.%Al,0.15 wt.%Mn,0.001 wt.%(10 ppm)Fe,690℃ for the holding temperature and holding at 30 mins for the holding time,respectively.The best combination for smallest intermetallic size were 9 wt.%Al,0.15 wt.%Mn,0.001 wt.%(10 ppm)Fe,630℃ for the holding temperature and holding at 60 mins for the holding time,respectively.Three groups of sludge factors,Chemical Sludge(CSF),Physical Sludge(PSF)and Comprehensive Sludge Factors(and CPSF)were established for prediction of sludge yields and intermetallic sizes in Al-containing Mg alloys.The CPSF with five independent variables including both chemical elements and process parameters gave high accuracy in prediction,as the prediction of the PSF with only the two processing parameters of the melt holding temperature and time showed a relatively large deviation from the experimental data.The Chemical Sludge Factor was primarily designed for small ingot producers and die casters with a limited melting and holding capacity,of which process parameters could be fixed easily.The Physical Sludge Factor could be used for mass production with a single type of Mg allo

This paper comprehensively analyzes the Manta Ray Foraging Optimization(MRFO)algorithm and its integration into diverse academic fields.Introduced in 2020,the MRFO stands as a novel metaheuristic algorithm,drawing inspiration from manta rays’unique foraging behaviors—specifically cyclone,chain,and somersault foraging.These biologically inspired strategies allow for effective solutions to intricate physical challenges.With its potent exploitation and exploration capabilities,MRFO has emerged as a promising solution for complex Optimization problems.Its utility and benefits have found traction in numerous academic sectors.Since its inception in 2020,a plethora of MRFO-based research has been featured in esteemed international journals such as IEEE,Wiley,Elsevier,Springer,MDPI,Hindawi,and Taylor&Francis,as well as at international conference proceedings.This paper consolidates the available literature on MRFO applications,covering various adaptations like hybridized,improved,and other MRFO variants,alongside Optimization challenges.Research trends indicate that 12%,31%,8%,and 49%of MRFO studies are distributed across these four categories respectively.

Techno-economic Optimization of a sustainable system to cogenerate power and water for remote areas

In this study,a new water and power cogeneration plant,employing photovoltaic(PV)and photovoltaic-thermal(PVT)panels simultaneously,is designed and optimized for a village struggling to provide energy and potable water in Iran.The system includes a solar energy unit to generate clean electricity and heat,and a reverse osmosis unit to produce drinking water.Techno-economic Optimization is performed by implementing a genetic algorithm,and a comprehensive water and energy management strategy is designed and presented in detail,expandable for future works.A new method,the logarithmic model,is used to calculate the depth of discharge(DOD)of lithium-ion batteries,which was previously a fixed and predetermined value in previous papers.Various indices,the constraints of the Optimization process,are also introduced to measure the reliabilities of different units.The effects of the system components on total cost are investigated and a comprehensive sensitivity analysis is performed to find the best solution to increase the penetration of renewable-energy systems.The results reveal that considering the depth of discharge of batteries and water storage tank capacity as decision variables reduces the system’s life-cycle cost(by 5.1%for changeable DODs).Furthermore,the simultaneous use of PV and PVT panels decreases the life-cycle cost considerably by≤19%compared with the use of only PVT panels.Additionally,the cost of the battery causes a decrease in the cost of electricity storage and the cost of producing and storing fresh water.

Design Optimization of Non-Axisymmetric Vane for an Axial Compressor under Inlet Distortion

The flow field at the inlet of compressors is generally encountered combined total pressure and swirl distortion for either aircraft engine with S-duct or gas turbine with lateral air intake.This inevitably deteriorates compressor aerodynamic performance,including not only the efficiency or pressure ratio but also the operation stability.In order to conquer this issue,appropriate measures such as integrating flow control techniques and modifying inlet or compressor design are of benefits.Due to this motivation,this article develops a full-annular two-dimensional(2D)and a partial-annular three-dimension(3D)Optimization strategy for non-axisymmetric vane design.Firstly,two numerical simulation methods for evaluating performance of full-annular 2D vane and compressor with partial-annular 3D vane are developed.The swirl patterns at the inlet of a 1.5-stage axial compressor are analyzed and parametrized,and the parameterization is transferred to characterize the circumferential distribution of geometrical parameters of the vane profile.These approaches dramatically reduce computational simulation costs without violating the non-axisymmetric flow distortion patterns.Then various full-annular 2D sections at different radial locations are constructed as design space.The designed vane is reconstructed and 3D numerical simulations are performed to examine performance of the non-axisymmetric vane and the compressor with it.Also,partial annular 3D Optimization is conducted for balancing compressor efficiency and stall margin.Results indicate that the designed non-axisymmetric vane based on full-annular Optimization approach can decrease the vane total pressure loss under the considered inlet flow distortion,while those using partial-annular Optimization achieve positive effects on compressor stall margin.

Large-scale solar sails can provide power to spacecraft for deep space exploration.A new type of telescopic tubular mast(TTM)driven by a bistable carbon fiber-reinforced polymer tube was designed in this study to solve the problem of contact between the sail membrane and the spacecraft under light pressure.Compared with the traditional TTM,it has a small size,light weight,high extension ratio,and simple structure.The anti-blossoming and self-unlocking structure of the proposed TTM was described.We aimed to simplify the TTM with a complex structure into a beam model with equal linear mass density,and the simulation results showed good consistency.The dynamic equation was derived based on the equivalent model,and the effects of different factors on the vibration characteristics of the TTM were analyzed.The performance parameters were optimized based on a multiobjective genetic algorithm,and prototype production and load experiments were conducted.The results show that the advantages of the new TTM can complete the deployment of large-scale solar sails,which is valuable for future deep space exploration.
