OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the effects of the Wenshen Jianpi recipe(温肾健脾方,WJR)on immune reconstruction and Natural killer(NK)cells in immunological non-responders(INRs)of people living with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)(PLWH)and propose new therapeutic strategies for HIV.METHODS:Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment principle“invigorating Qi and warming Yang in the spleen and kidneys”,WJR combined with antiretroviral therapy(ART)therapy was performed in a randomized,double-blind,placebo-controlled study of 60 patients with non-responders.The randomized process was executed by the Clinical Evaluation Center of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences.Sixty patients who met the inclusion criteria obtained random numbers(that is the drug number)was randomly divided into a treatment group and a placebo control group according to a 1∶1 ratio.CD4+T cell counts and Natural killer(NK)cells counts were evaluated at baseline and 12-week,24-week follow-ups.RESULTS:Four participants received random numbers and did not enter the group due to the patient’s own reasons.A total of 56 patients were enrolled,including 28 in the treatment group and 28 in the control group.CD4+T cell counts in the treatment group were significantly increased at week 24(P=0.01<0.05),which were significantly higher than those in the control group(P=0.01<0.05).Although no significant differences were observed between two groups,the CD56bri CD16-NK cell counts in the treatment group were significantly increased after duration.and CD56dim CD16+NK cell counts in the treatment group were significantly higher than those in the control group after 24 weeks of treatment(P=0.025<0.05).As compared with the control group,the treatment group had significantly lower CD56neg CD16+NK cell counts after 24 weeks of treatment(P=0.023<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:WJR promotes the immune reconstruction of INRs and redistribution of NK cell subsets,notably decreasing CD56neg CD16+NK cell counts in INRs.However,the redistribution of NK cell subsets is not beneficial for imm

Environmental fate and behavior of silver nanoparticles in Natural estuarine systems

Silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) are widely used in many consumer products, whereas their environmental behaviors in Natural aquatic systems remain unknown, especially in Natural brackish media.Therefore, it is urgent to investigate the environmental fate of AgNPs in Natural brackish waters.Here, we investigated the stability of citrate-coated AgNPs in Natural brackish water collected from 6 different sites with distinct salinities in the Xinglinwan Reservoir, located in Xiamen City, southeast China.The obtained results showed that AgNP colloids remained stable in low-salinity waters, which was mainly determined by the effects of dissolved organic matter(DOM) promoting the stability of the nanoparticles.However, the environmental fate of AgNPs in high-salinity waters was dominated by the salinity or ionic strength, especially the free ion concentrations of Cl-, SO42-, or S2-, resulting in rapid sedimentation and dissolution.In addition, both DOM and salinity contributed to the environmental behavior of AgNPs in moderate-salinity waters,ultimately resulting in either colloidal stability or sedimentation.Overall, these results may reveal that AgNPs remain relatively stable for a long period in low-salinity Natural waters,and that the stability might gradually decrease as AgNPs are transferred from freshwaters through brackish waters and eventually end up in seawater along the bay.Our findings also further indicate that the toxicity and potential risks of AgNPs may present more serious threats to the environment and organisms in Natural freshwaters than in Natural estuarine systems or seawater.

Mineralogical characteristics and photocatalytic properties of Natural sphalerite from China

Different Natural sphalerites have a range of photocatalytic properties that can potentially be exploited for environmental remediation purposes.To develop value in the exploitation of sphalerite,samples were collected from 19 ore deposits in China and characterized for their mineralogical and photocatalytic properties.X-ray diffraction(XRD) and electron probe micro analysis(EPMA) measurements indicated that all the Natural sphalerites from various localities crystallized in cubic phases with various chemical compositions.The substitution of Fe for Zn ranged from 0.235% to 14.826% by weight,Mn from 0.004% to4.868%,Cu from 0.009% to 5.529% and Cd from 0.133% to 1.576%.As Fe became more abundant,the color of Natural sphalerite darkened,becoming almost black;and higher Fe content was associated with stronger visible light absorption.Photoluminescence spectra showed emission mainly related to S-vacancies and progressively decreasing fluorescence intensity with increasing Fe content.Tests of the photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange indicated that the sample with the highest Cd content but moderate Fe content had the highest photocatalytic activity.Specifically,the degradation of Methyl Orange(30 mg/L)attained 82.11% efficiency under visible light irradiation for 4 hr of Natural sphalerite with4.262% Fe and 1.576% Cd.Overall,the Fe content in sphalerite was found to contribute to the visible light absorption ability and the recombination rate of photo-generated electrons and holes,while substitution by Cd was observed to have a greater effect on the photocatalytic properties.These findings provide a scientific basis for the profitable utilization of base metal resources like sphalerite.

Use of polymeric sub-micron ion-exchange resins for removal of lead,copper,zinc,and nickel from Natural waters

This research investigated the removal capacity of polymeric sub-micron ion-exchange resins(SMR) for removal of lead, copper, zinc, and nickel from Natural waters in competition with Natural organic matter(NOM). Polymeric SMR particles were created and tested to ensure that they were adequately dispersed in the solution. They removed little NOM(10%or less) from river water and wastewater, indicating that competition from NOM was not a major concern. SMR were able to remove 82% ± 0.2% of lead, 46% ± 0.6% of copper, 55% ±20% of zinc, and 17% ± 2% of nickel from river water spiked with 500 μg/L of each. Similarly,in wastewater, they were able to remove 86% ± 0.1% of lead, 38% ± 0.8% of copper, 28% ± 1%of zinc, and 11% ± 1% of nickel.

Neuroprotection mediated by Natural products and their chemical derivatives

Neuronal injuries can lead to various diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases,stroke,trauma,ischemia and,more specifically,glaucoma and optic neuritis.The cellular mechanisms that regulate neuronal death include calcium influx and calcium overload,excitatory amino acid release,oxidative stress,inflammation and microglial activation.Much attention has been paid to the effective prevention and treatment of neuroprotective drugs by Natural products.This review summarizes the neuroprotective aspects of Natural products,extracted from Panax ginseng,Camellia sinensis,soy and some other plants,and some of their chemical derivatives.Their antioxidative and anti-inflammatory action and their inhibition of apoptosis and microglial activation are assessed.This will provide new directions for the development of novel drugs and strategies to treat neurodegenerative diseases.

Nature brings new avenues to the therapy of central nervous system diseases——an overview of possible treatments derived from Natural products

Natural products(NPs), including traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), have been long and widely used in the prevention and treatment of central nervous system(CNS) diseases by virtue of their abundant sources, diverse structures, and novel activities.In this review article, we intend to summarize and discuss the situation or status of the clinical employments or trials of the NPs and their derivatives with CNS activities. NPs that have been extensively studied in preclinical research in recent years are also included. The compounds presented in this review are classified according to their indications and followed by details such as Natural sources, possible biological mechanisms, and development status, while a considerable proportion of them are found in TCM. In addition, some drug combinations with synergistic effects are also mentioned. According to their impressive therapeutic effects and novel chemical structures, NPs are not only effective therapeutic remedies in clinic, but also lead compounds for structural modification, which indicate that nature brings new avenues to the therapy of CNS diseases.

Major progress in the Natural gas exploration and development in the past seven decades in China

China has made significant progress in the exploration and development of Natural gas in the past 70 years,from the gas-poor country to the world’s sixth largest gas production country.In 1949,the annual gas output in China was 1117×104 m3,the proved gas reserves were 3.85×108 m3,and the average annual gas consumption and available reserves of per person were 0.0206 m3 and 0.7107 m3,respectively.By 2018,the average domestic annual gas production per person was 114.8576 m3 and the reserves were 12011.08 m3,and the average domestic annual gas production and reserves per person in the past 70 years increased by 5575 times and 16900 times,respectively.The exploration and development of large gas fields is the main way to rapidly develop the Natural gas industry.72 large gas fields have been discovered in China so far,mainly distributed in three basins,Sichuan(25),Ordos(13)and Tarim(10).In 2018,the total gas production of the large gas fields in these three basins was 1039.26×108 m3,accounting for 65%of the total gas production in China.By the end of 2018,the cumulative proved gas reserves of the 72 large gas fields had amounted to 124504×108 m3,accounting for 75%of the total national gas reserves(16.7×1012 m3).New theories of Natural gas have promoted the development of China’s Natural gas industry faster.Since 1979,the new theory of coal-derived gas has boosted the discovery of gas fields mainly from coal-measure source rocks in China.In 2018,the gas production of large coal-derived gas fields in China accounted for 50.93%and 75.47%of the total national gas production and total gas production of large gas fields,respectively.Guided by shale gas theories,shale gas fields such as Fuling,Changning,Weiyuan and Weirong have been discovered.In 2018,the total proved geological reserves of shale gas were 10455.67×108 m3,and the annual gas production was 108.8×108 m3,demonstrating a good prospect of shale gas in China.

Natural stilbenes effects in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most frequent neurodegenerative diseases.This pathology is characterized by protein aggregates,mainly constituted by amyloid peptide and tau,leading to neuronal death and cognitive impairments.Drugs currently proposed to treat this pathology do not prevent neurodegenerative processes and are mainly symptomatic therapies.However,stilbenes presenting multiple pharmacological effects could be good potential therapeutic candidates.The aim of this review is to gather the more significant papers among the broad literature on this topic,concerning the beneficial effects of stilbenes (resveratrol derivatives) in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease.Indeed,numerous studies focus on cellular models,but an in vivo approach remains of primary importance since in animals (mice or rats,generally),bioavailability and metabolism are taken into account,which is not the case in in vitro studies.Furthermore,examination of memory ability is feasible in animal models,which strengthens the relevance of a compound with a view to future therapy in humans.This paper is addressed to any researcher who needs to study untested Natural stilbenes or who wants to experiment the most effective Natural stilbenes in largest animals or in humans.This review shows that resveratrol,the reference polyphenol,is largely studied and seems to have interesting properties on amyloid plaques,and cognitive impairment.However,some resveratrol derivatives such as gnetin C,trans-piceid,or astringin have never been tested on animals.Furthermore,pterostilbene is of particular interest,by its improvement of cognitive disorders and its neuroprotective role.It could be relevant to evaluate this molecule in clinical trials.

Identification and characterization of a novel group of Natural antisense transcripts from RNA1.2 gene locus of human cytomegalovirus

Background:Natural anti-sense transcripts(NATs),which are transcribed from the complementary DNA strand of annotated genes,exert regulatory function of gene expression.Increasing studies recognized anti-sense transcription widespread throughout human cytomegalovirus(HCMV)genome,whereas the anti-sense transcription of RNA1.2 gene locus has never been investigated.In this study,the transcription of the RNA1.2 anti-sense strand was investigated in clinically isolated HCMV strain.Methods:Strand-specific high-through RNA-sequencing(RNA-seq)was performed to find possible anti-sense transcripts(ASTs).For analyzing and visualization of RNA-seq data sets,Integrative Genomics Viewer software was applied.To confirm these possibilities,Northern blotting and rapid amplification of cDNA ends(RACE)were used.Results:Transcription of the opposite strand of RNA1.2 gene locus was detected by RNA-sequencing using RNAs extracted from human embryonic lung fibroblasts infected with HCMV clinical isolate HAN.At least three HCMV NATs,named RNA1.2 AST 1,RNA1.2 AST2,and RNA 1.2 AST3,were characterized by Northern blotting and RACE analyses.These RNA1.2 ASTs orientated from the complementary strand of RNA1.2 locus during the late phase of HCMV infection.The 5'-and 3'-termini of these transcripts were located within the opposite sequence of the predicted RNA1.2 gene.Conclusion:A cluster of novel NATs was transcribed from the opposite sequence of the HCMV RNA 1.2 gene region.
