The stability analysis of an abandoned underground gypsum mine requires the determination of the mine pillar’s strength.This is especially important for flooded abandoned mines where the gypsum pillars become saturated and are subjected to dissolution after flooding.Further,mine pillars are subjected to blast vibrations that generate some level of macro- and micro-fracturing.Testing samples of gypsum must,therefore,simulate these conditions as close as possible.In this research,the strength of gypsum is investigated in an as-received saturated condition using uniaxial compressive strength (UCS),Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) and point load index (PLI) tests.The scale effect was investigated and new correlations were derived to describe the effect of sample size on both UCS and BTS under dry and saturated conditions.Effects of blasting on these parameters were observed and the importance of choosing the proper samples was discussed.Finally,correlations were derived for both compressive and tensile strengths under dry and saturated conditions from the PLI test results,which are commonly used as a simple substitute for the indirect determination of UCS and BTS.

Diversifying Clean Water: An Examination of Drinking Water Quality and Social Disparities in michigan

Water is one of the most essential resources required to sustain life. However, it could be detrimental to the health of those without access to water that is properly treated. Although the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 set regulations to protect citizens from naturally occurring and man-made contaminants, some people are still without clean and safe water, which is speculated to be because of their race. This research examines the disproportionality of available clean water provided by government sources in michigan and its correlation with race and household income. In the study, it has been found that one of the leading causes of water contamination is industrial activity, with the automobile industry being responsible for approximately 300 million tons of lead contamination in water, and that the manufacturing company’s locations mostly centered in minority and low-income areas. Lower income cities, such as Hamtramck and Benton Harbor, have an average of 14.8 drinking water standard violations with the highest being 99 total violations, while higher income cities, like Novi and Bloomfield hills, have an average of 4 violations. Cities, like Flint and Detroit, which have a higher minority population, are 10 times more likely to have a water standard violation, and the minority population is proportionally related to the possibility of industrial manufacturing being located in those areas. These communities also face a higher risk of birth defects, developmental issues in children, and organ failure in adults, due to continuous exposure to water contaminants. Race as a direct causation could not be proven, but there are links to direct correlation through historical redlining and housing trends.

Retene and methylretene have been identified by gas chromatography-mass spec-trometry in aromatic hydrocarbon fractions of Silurian carbonate extracts of the michigan Basin. Retene identified in pre-Devonian carbonates indicates that the compound not only is the biomarker of higher plants but also derived from alga or bacterium. The geochemical significance of methylretene has been discussed.

U-47700 is one of many drugs that have been part of a group of compounds called novel psychoactive substances(NPS).U-47700 is a synthetic opioid agonist developed by Upjohn pharmaceuticals but never approved.The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office in Pontiac,michigan,began observing this compound in the fall of 2016,primarily in cases with other drugs of abuse and NPS.This communication described 18 drug-related deaths in which U-47700 was detected.Blood U-47700 concentrations ranged from 0.37 to 370 ng/mL(mean 35 and median 4.9 ng/mL).Other opioids were detected in 83% of the cases.Other drugs present in these cases are described as well as the scene investigation.While only one death was likely due directly to U-47700,the cases described here demonstrate how NPS have become an important consideration in evaluating drug-related deaths today.

Carfentanil,an ultrapotent analog of fentanyl,has invaded the street drug market,unbeknownst to many heroin users.About 10,000 times more potent than morphine,it was initially suspected that 20μg of the substance was lethal.In this case series,we present 17 confirmed carfentanil overdoses in michigan,with a primary focus on the concentration levels.Through a retrospective review,each public death reported in Oakland County,michigan,with a subsequent toxicology report was investigated for suspected carfentanil use.To characterize each fatality,the autopsy results were collected,including the postmortem findings at scene and the decedent’s medical and social history.Carfentanil levels were measured through liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry(LC-MS-MS)by National Medical Services(NMS)Laboratories.Our case series found postmortem carfentanil concentrations as low as 10 ng/mL,with a mean concentration of 0.387 ng/mL.Ultimately,there are implications on law enforcement,first responders,and health care providers when dealing with this emerging illicit substance,and there is an alarmingly high mortality rate associated with the abuse of carfentanil.

The destruction of the South Vietnamese rice (Oryza sativa L) crop using an arsenic-based herbicide known as Agent Blue during the American Vietnam War (1965-1972) was not a secret;however, it received little media attention in the United States. Republic of Vietnam and United States (U.S.) militaries began destroying food crops (rice) in November of 1962 primarily via aerial applications in the Mekong Delta and Central Highlands of South Vietnam. Spraying of Agent Blue on 100,000 ha of mangrove forests and about 300,000 ha of rice paddies just before rice harvest time resulted in the destruction of the standing crop and rendered the land contaminated with arsenic (As). Six Rainbow herbicides, commonly called Agent Orange, Agent Green, Agent Pink, Agent Purple, Agent White, and Agent Blue, were sprayed on wetlands, rice paddies, forests, mangroves, bamboo and military base perimeter fences to defoliate jungle vegetation, reveal guerilla hiding places and destroy the food supply of enemy troops. South Vietnamese farmers, U.S. and Republic of Vietnam military personnel, and communist insurgents were exposed to these herbicides with immediate and longer term impacts on personal health, civilian household food security and population-wide famine. Agent Blue (cacodylic acid, C2H2AsO2,) was the most effective of all the Rainbow herbicides in killing rice and grasses. Manufacturing of cacodylic acid began in the late 1950s in the U.S. at the Ansul Company chemical plant in Marinette, Wisconsin and Menominee, michigan. During the Vietnam War, ocean going ships were loaded with 208-liter Agent Blue barrels and shipped via the St. Lawrence Seaway to the coast of South Vietnam. Arsenic (As) is a naturally occurring element that is found throughout SE Asia deltas including the Mekong Delta.
