The Impact of Sleep Determination on Procrastination before Bedtime:The Role of Anxiety

Objective:The importance of good sleep for energy recovery and overall physical and mental health cannot be overstated.However,the increasing competitiveness of society,diversifying lifestyles,and the rapid spread of the internet and electronic devices have significantly impacted people’s sleep patterns,particularly through bedtime procrastination.Therefore,this study aims to investigate the relationship and underlying mechanisms between sleep determination,anxiety,and bedtime procrastination among the Chinese population.Method:The study utilized data from a national survey—the China Residents’Sleep Condition Survey(November 2021,with 6,037 participants).By constructing mediation and moderation models,it analyzed the relationship and mechanisms between sleep determination and bedtime procrastination,highlighting the dual role of anxiety:as a mediator between sleep determination and bedtime procrastination,and as a moderator of their relationship.Results:There was a negative correlation between sleep determination and bedtime procrastination;anxiety was related to an increase in bedtime procrastination behaviors;In the interplay between sleep determination and pre-bedtime procrastination,the regulatory effect of anxiety is found to be more pronounced than its intermediary role,with anxiety significantly diminishing the inverse relationship between sleep determination and procrastination before bedtime.Conclusion:Bedtime procrastination can lead to sleep issues,thus reducing sleep quality.Enhancing sleep determination or alleviating pre-sleep anxiety can help inhibit bedtime procrastination behaviors.Intervening and reducing bedtime procrastination is one of the effective measures to improve sleep quality.

Phenols have been shown to influence the cellular proliferation and function of thyroid in experimental models. However, few human studies have investigated the association between phenol exposure and thyroid cancer, and the underlying mechanisms are also poorly understood. We conducted a case-control study by age- and sex-matching 143 thyroid cancer and 224 controls to investigate the associations between phenol exposures and the risk of thyroid cancer, and further to explore the mediating role of oxidative stress. We found that elevated urinary triclosan (TCS), bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) levels were associated with increased risk of thyroid cancer (all P for trends mediation analysis showed that urinary 8-iso PGFmediated 28.95%, 47.06% and 31.08% of the associations between TCS, BPA and BPS exposures and the risk of thyroid cancer, respectively (all P < 0.05). Our results suggest that exposure to TCS, BPA and BPS may be associated with increased risk of thyroid cancer and lipid peroxidation may be an intermediate mechanism. Further studies are warranted to confirm the findings.

Childhood maltreatment and suicide ideation: A possible mediation of social support

BACKGROUND Existing literature suggests a positive link between childhood maltreatment(CM)and suicide ideation(SI).Nevertheless,whether social support significantly mediates this association remains unknown.AIM To investigate whether social support significantly mediates the association between CM and SI.METHODS In this cross-sectional study of 4732 adolescents from southwest China,we intended to discuss the association between CM and multiple types of SI.In addition,the mediation of major types of social support in this association was also investigated.A self-administrated questionnaire was used to collect the data.A series of multivariate logistic regression models were employed to estimate the association between different types of CM,social support,and SI.The possible mediation of social support in the association between CM and SI was assessed using the path model.RESULTS Based on the cutoffs for subscales of Childhood Trauma Questionnaire,928(19.61%),1269(26.82%),595(12.57%),2337(49.39%),and 3067(64.81%)respondents reported physical abuse,emotional abuse,sexual abuse,physical neglect,and emotional neglect,respectively.Among all the social sources,parental support presented as a significant mediator in the association between emotional maltreatment,both abuse and neglect,and all three types of SI:1-wk,1-year,and lifetime.Parental social support mediated 5.31%and 29.23%,4.80%and 24.50%,and 7.04%and 44.42%of the overall emotional abuse-SI and emotional neglect-SI associations,respectively.CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that improving parental social support might be effective in preventing suicidal risk related to childhood emotional maltreatment in adolescents.

Background Malaria remains a major burden in sub-Saharan Africa(SSA).While an association between poverty and malaria has been demonstrated,a clearer understanding of explicit mechanisms through which socioeconomic position(SEP)influences malaria risk is needed to guide the design of more comprehensive interventions for malaria risk mitigation.This systematic review provides an overview of the current evidence on the mediators of socioeconomic disparities in malaria in SSA.Methods We searched PubMed and Web of Science for randomised controlled trials,cohort,case-control and cross-sectional studies published in English between January 1,2000 to May 31,2022.Further studies were identified following reviews of reference lists of the studies included.We included studies that either(1)conducted a formal mediation analysis of risk factors on the causal pathway between SEP and malaria infections or(2)adjusted for these potential mediators as confounders on the association between SEP and malaria using standard regression models.At least two independent reviewers appraised the studies,conducted data extraction,and assessed risk of bias.A systematic overview is presented for the included studies.Results We identified 41 articles from 20 countries in SSA for inclusion in the final review.Of these,30 studies used cross-sectional design,and 26 found socioeconomic inequalities in malaria risk.Three formal mediation analyses showed limited evidence of mediation of food security,housing quality,and previous antimalarial use.Housing,education,insecticide-treated nets,and nutrition were highlighted in the remaining studies as being protective against malaria independent of SEP,suggesting potential for mediation.However,methodological limitations included the use of cross-sectional data,insufficient confounder adjustment,heterogeneity in measuring both SEP and malaria,and generally low or moderate-quality studies.No studies considered exposure mediator interactions or considered identifiability assumptions.Conclusions Few studies

Reading comprehension without phonological mediation:Further evidence from a Chinese aphasic individual

An important issue in visual word comprehension literature is whether or not semantic access is mediated by phonological processing. In this paper, we present a Chinese individual, YGA, who provides converging evidence to directly address this issue. YGA has sustained damage to the left posterior superior and middle temporal lobe, and shows difficulty in orally name pictures and reading printed words aloud. He makes phonological errors on these tasks and also semantic errors on picture naming, indicating a deficit at accessing the phonological representations for output. However, he is intact at understanding the meaning of visually presented words. Such a profile challenges the hypothesis that semantic access in reading is phonologically mediated and provides further evidence for the universal principle of direct semantic access in reading.

The study assessed the mediation effect of employee training on implementation of hotel management practices for hotel business sustainability in Tanzania.Study was conducted in two cities Arusha and Dar es Salaam whereby a structured questionnaire with Likert scale range from one to five was used to collect information from the sample of 400 hotels’managers.The findings of the hypothesis indicate that two hypotheses were significant at significant at pmediation effect on the hotel business sustainability whereby p>0.05 hence rejected.It was also found the direct effect was significance at p0.05 and total effect was significance at p<0.01.It was concluded that,employees’training does not mediate the implementation of hotel environmental management practices for sustainability of hotel business in Tanzania.

The Strategy of Third-Party mediation Based on the Option Prioritization in the Graph Model

The resolution of real-world conflicts is often supported by third-party intervention (i.e., media? tion). This paper proposes a possible mediation support in the form of a reverse optimization procedure under the framework of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution (GMCR). The approach computes minimal priority adjustments of preference statements that are necessary to achieve a desired agreement. A mathematical model, based on the matrix form of GMCR, is developed to analyze this third-party mediation problem. Thereby;this study makes a first attempt to obtain option-based mediation strategies, which add comprehensiveness to the traditional state-based strategies, yet are easier to understand and hence more acceptable to the conflict participants. To illustrate the practicality;the proposed procedure is applied to a medical dispute between a patient and a hospital, with the aim to suggest changes in the ordering of preference statements that lead to a desired outcome.

Background:Hypertension is associated with stroke-related mortality.However,the long-term association of blood pressure(BP)and the risk of stroke-related mortality and the influence path of BP on stroke-related death remain unknown.The current study aimed to estimate the long-term causal associations between BP and stroke-related mortality and the potential mediating and moderated mediating model of the associations.Methods:This is a 45-year follow-up cohort study and a total of 1696 subjects were enrolled in 1976 and 1081 participants died by the latest follow-up in 2020.COX proportional hazard model was used to explore the associations of stroke-related death with baseline systolic blood pressure(SBP)/diastolic blood pressure(DBP)categories and BP changes from 1976 to 1994.The mediating and moderated mediating effects were performed to detect the possible influencing path from BP to stroke-related deaths.E value was calculated in the sensitivity analysis.Results:Among 1696 participants,the average age was 44.38±6.10 years,and 1124 were men(66.3%).After a 45-year follow-up,a total of 201(11.9%)stroke-related deaths occurred.After the adjustment,the COX proportional hazard model showed that among the participants with SBP≥160 mmHg or DBP≥100 mmHg in 1976,the risk of stroke-related death increased by 217.5%(hazard ratio[HR]=3.175,95%confidence interval[CI]:2.297-4.388),and the adjusted HRs were higher in male participants.Among the participants with hypertension in 1976 and 1994,the risk of stroke-related death increased by 110.4%(HR=2.104,95%CI:1.632-2.713),and the adjusted HRs of the BP changes were higher in male participants.Body mass index(BMI)significantly mediated the association of SBP and stroke-related deaths and this mediating effect was moderated by gender.Conclusions:In a 45-year follow-up,high BP and persistent hypertension are associated with stroke-related death,and these associations were even more pronounced in male participants.The paths of association are mediated by BMI and moderated by gender

Under the dual driven forces of soaring disputes and national policy,the dispute resolution ecosystem of China showed the mediation centralism,and the revival of mediation presented the characteristics of adversary system.In order to comply with the modern rule of law system,the traditional mediation is incorporated into the modern legal system through the three-level transformation of"discipline of laws","introduction of procedures"and"specialized cultivation",which was promoted by the popularity of social governance,the input of the idea of diversified solutions and the pragmatic impetus under the pressure of social transformation.The mediation movement has the characteristics of both consciousness of pragmatism and the initial legalization,but will also face the mediation disorder.The remodeling of mediation must be rooted in systematization and modernization.Its development trend includes expansion of fields,symbiosis of autonomy and specialization,and mandatory introduction.

Multiple mediation effects of health locusof control and hope on the relationshipbetween stroke patients’ social supportand self-management

Objective:This study aimed to identify the mediation effects of health locus of control(HLC)and hope between stroke patients’social support and self-management.Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted.A total of 300 Chinese stroke patients were recruited by convenient sampling from the acupuncture department of two Chinese Traditional Medical Hospitals in Tianjin Province from June to September 2018.The self-report questionnaires include Social Support Assessment Scale,Herth Hope Index,Mental Health Locus of Control Scale,Stroke Self-management Behavior Scale,and personal information questionnaires.All the survey data were entered in Excel and analyzed using the SPSS 24.0 program.mediation was tested with Bootstrapping in AMOS 23.0 program.Results:The result showed that internal health locus of control(IHLC),chance health locus of control(CHLC)and hope were the mediators between social support and self-management.The direct,indirect,and total effects of social support on self-management behavior were 0.306 (P<0.01),0.109(P<0.01),and 0.415(P<0.01),respectively.Conclusions:Social support can directly influence self-management,and it can also indirectly influence self-management through IHLC,CHLC,and hope.
