Spinal cord injury(SCI),either from trauma or degenerative changes,can res ult in severe disability and impaired quality of life.Understanding the cellular processes and molecular mechanisms that underlie SCI is imperative to identifying molecular targets for potential therapy.Recent studies have shown that non-coding rnas,including both Long non-coding RNAs(lncrnas)and circular rnas(circrnas),regulate various cellular processes in SCI.In this review,we will describe the changes in lncRNA and circRNA expression that occur after SCI and how these changes may be related to SCI progression.Current evidence for the roles of lncrnas and circrnas in neuronal cell death and glial cell activation will also be reviewed.Finally,the possibility that lncrnas and circrnas are novel modulato rs of SCI pathogenesis will be discussed.

Endometriosis(EM)is a benign gynecological disease that affects the fertility and health of women of reproductive age;it is characterized by the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity.Although several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the underlying cause of EM,its pathogenesis remains obscure.Recently,non-coding rnas were reported to be involved in the occurrence and development of EM.Micrornas and Long non-coding RNAs are the main members of the non-coding RNA family that contribute to EM progression in various aspects,such as cell proliferation,apoptosis,invasion,and angiogenesis.Angiogenesis plays a pivotal role in the initiation and development of EM and provides a substantial background for the invasion,proliferation,and long-term growth of endometriotic implants.This review aimed to investigate the role of micrornas and Long non-coding RNAs in regulating angiogenesis in EM and discuss how this mechanism can be used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in EM.

Long non-coding RNAs(lncrnas)regulate a variety of biological processes,including sexual reproduction and differentiation.Saccharina japonica,a commercially important brown alga in China,shows remarkable sexual dimorphism in haploid gametophytes.The sex of Saccharina japonica gametophytes is determined by UV sexual system.However,no results have been reported on the lncrnas involved in the sex-related gene regulation of S.japonica.This study identified a number of lncrnas and assessed their expression levels in male and female gametophytes.Among them,a total of 405 lncrnas and 211 mrnas showed differential expressions.Furthermore,the functions of target genes of differentially expressed lncrnas(DELs)differed from those of differentially expressed genes(DEGs),suggesting that lncRNA may interact with other functional proteins,in addition to DEGs,to involve sex regulation in S.japonica.There were 32 and 90 potential cis-regulatory and trans-regulatory interactions between DELsDEGs,respectively.Five of these lncrnas(LNC_002974,LNC_021059,LNC_038466,LNC_051584,and LNC_027400)interacted with putative male sex determination region(SDR)genes,suggesting that they act as regulators in gametophytes'sex regulation potentially.Findings from this study contribute to our understanding of the roles of lncrnas in sex differentiation and lay the foundation for functional studies of candidate lncrnas in the future.

The genome-wide characterization of long non-coding RNA(lncRNA)in insects demonstrates their importance in fundamental biological processes.Esentially,an in-depth understanding of the functional repertoire of lncRNA in insects is pivotal to insect resources utilization and sustainable pest control.Using a custom bioinformatics pipeline,we identified 1861 lncrnas encoded by 1852 loci in the Sogatella furcifera genome.We profiled lncRNA expression in different developmental stages and observed that the expression of lncrnas is more highly temporally restricted compared to protein-coding genes.More up-re gulated Sogatella furcifera lncRNA expressed in the embryo,4th and 5th instars,suggesting that increased lncRNA levels may play a role in these developmental stages.We compared the relationship between the expression of Sogatella furcifera lncRNA and its nearest protein gene and found that lncrnas were more correlated to their downstream coding neighbors on the opposite strand.Our genome-wide profiling of lncrnas in Sogatella furcifera identifies exciting candidates for characterization of lncrnas,and also provides information on lncRNA regulation during insect development.

Identification and comparison of Long non-coding RNAs in the silk gland between domestic and wild silkworms

Under long-term artificial selection, the domestic silkworm （Bombyx mori） has increased its silk yield tremendously in comparison with its wild progenitor, Bombyx mandarina. However, the molecular mechanism of silk yield increase is still unknown. Comparative analysis of Long non-coding RNAs （lncrnas） may provide some insights into understanding this phenotypic variation. In this study, using RNA sequencing technology data of silk gland in domestic and wild silkworms, we identified 599 lncrnas in the silk gland of the silkworm. Compared with protein-coding genes, the silk gland lncRNA genes tend to have fewer exon numbers, shorter transcript length and lower GC-content. Moreover, we found that three lncRNA genes are significantly and differentially expressed between domestic and wild silkworms. The potential targets of two differentially expressed lncrnas （DELs）（dw4sg_0040 and dw4sg_0483） and the expression-correlated genes with the two DELs are mainly enriched in the related processes of silk protein translation. This implies that these DELs may affect the phenotypic variation in silk yield between the domestic and wild silkworms through the post-transcriptional regulation of silk protein.

Long non-coding RNAs(lnc rnas) are a subgroup of non-coding RNA transcripts greater than 200 nucleotides in length with little or no protein-coding potential. Emerging evidence indicates that lnc rnas may play important regulatory roles in the pathogenesis and progression of human cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Certain lnc rnas may be used as diagnostic or prognostic markers for HCC, a serious malignancy with increasing morbidity and high mortality rates worldwide. Therefore, elucidating the functional roles of lnc rnas in tumors can contribute to a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of HCC and may help in developing novel therapeutic targets. In this review, we summarize the recent progress regarding the functional roles of lnc rnas in HCC and explore their clinical implications as diagnostic or prognostic biomarkers and molecular therapeutic targets for HCC.

The transcription of essentially the entire eukaryotic genome produces a huge amount of non-coding rnas.Among them,long noncoding rnas(lncrnas)consist of a significant portion that widely exists across mammal genome,generating from high-throughput transcriptomic studies in the last decade.Although the functions of most lncrnas remain to be further investigated,many of them have already been shown to play critical roles during normal development and disease conditions.Increasing evidence indicates that lncrnas involve in versatile biological processes during erythroid proliferation and differentiation,including erythroid cell survival,heme metabolism,globin switching and regulation,erythroid enucleation,etc,via cis-or trans-mediated molecular mechanisms.In this review,we focus on recent advances regarding the functions and mechanisms of lncrnas in normal erythropoiesis.

Acute ischemic stroke is a clinical emergency and a condition with high morbidity,mortality,and disability.Accurate predictive,diagnostic,and prognostic biomarkers and effective therapeutic targets for acute ischemic stroke remain undetermined.With innovations in high-throughput gene sequencing analysis,many aberrantly expressed non-coding rnas(ncrnas)in the brain and peripheral blood after acute ischemic stroke have been found in clinical samples and experimental models.Differentially expressed ncrnas in the post-stroke brain were demonstrated to play vital roles in pathological processes,leading to neuroprotection or deterioration,thus ncrnas can serve as therapeutic targets in acute ischemic stroke.Moreover,distinctly expressed ncrnas in the peripheral blood can be used as biomarkers for acute ischemic stroke prediction,diagnosis,and prognosis.In particular,ncrnas in peripheral immune cells were recently shown to be involved in the peripheral and brain immune response after acute ischemic stroke.In this review,we consolidate the latest progress of research into the roles of ncrnas(micrornas,long ncrnas,and circular rnas)in the pathological processes of acute ischemic stroke–induced brain damage,as well as the potential of these ncrnas to act as biomarkers for acute ischemic stroke prediction,diagnosis,and prognosis.Findings from this review will provide novel ideas for the clinical application of ncrnas in acute ischemic stroke.

Exosomes are a class of small extracellular vesicles,30-150 nm in diameter,that transfer biological information(e.g.,DNA,RNA,and protein)via cell-to-cell communication.Exosomes play critical roles in the occurrence and development of human cancers,including colorectal cancer(CRC).Recent studies have shown that Long non-coding RNAs(lncrnas)can be encapsulated in exosomes,which transfer lncrnas from secretory cells into recipient cells.This process affects the progression of CRC,since exosomal lncrnas display special and extensive functions in CRC tumorigenesis,including malignant proliferation,metastasis,chemoresistance,and inflammatory response.Moreover,due to their specificity and sensitivity,exosomal lncrnas are released into body fluids(e.g.,urine,sputum,and plasma),which have the potential to be biomarkers of CRC tumorigenesis within screening efforts and medical and epidemiologic research.In this review,we aim to clarify the function and mechanism of exosomal lncrnas in CRC tumorigenesis and provide a strategy for early diagnosis and medical treatment of this malignancy.
