Inhibitory Effect of Estrogens,Phytoestrogens,and Caloric Restriction on Oxidative Stress and Hepato-toxicity in Aged Rats

Objective To investigate the protective effect of 17β-estradiol （E2）, peganum harmala extract （PHE） administration and calorie restriction （CR） treatment （60%） on oxidative stress and hepato-toxicity in aged rats. Methods Eighteen months old animals that were treated at the age of 12 months were divided into 4 groups： normal control group with free access to food, E2 treatment group, PHE treatment group and CR treatment group of the food given to control group. Six male rats at the age of 4 months were used as a reference group. Results Aging significantly decreased superoxide dismutase （SOD）, catalase （CAT） and glutathione peroxidase （GPX）, and increased lactate deshydrogenase （LDH）, gamma-glyiamyl transferase （GGT）, pbosphatase alkalines （PAL）, aspartate and lactate transaminase （AST and ALT） activities in the liver. Aging also induced an increased lipid peroxidation level, histological changes and a decreased E2 level. However, treatment with E2, PHE, and CR increased 17β-estradiol, and decreased hepatic dysfunction parameters and lipid peroxidation as well as histological changes in the liver of aged rats. Conclusion The antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of PHE and CR is possibly attributed to its ability to increase E2 level, which as an antioxidant, acts as a scavenger of ROS. Further studies on the pharmaceutical functions of E2 in males may contribute to its clinical application.

Hepatitis C virus-associated B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients are prone to develop bone marrow or various tissue infiltrates with monoclonal B cells, monoclonal B lymphocytosis or different types of B cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (BCNHL), of which the most common are splenic marginal zone BCNHL, diffuse large BCNHL and follicular lymphoma. The association between chronic HCV infection and non Hodgkin’s lymphoma has been observed especially in areas with high prevalence of this viral infection. Outside the limitations of some studies that have been conducted, there are also geographic, environmental, and genetic factors that contribute to the epidemiological differences. Various microenvironmental signals, such as cytokines, viral antigenic external stimulation of lymphocyte receptors by HCV antigens, and intercellular interactions contribute to B cell proliferation. HCV lymphotropism and chronic antigenic stimulation are involved in B-lymphocyte expansion, as mixted cryoglobulinemia or monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, which can progress to BCNHL. HCV replication in B lymphocytes has oncogenic effect mediated by intracellular HCV proteins. It is also involved in an important induction of reactive oxygen species that can lead to permanent B lymphocyte damage, as DNA mutations, after binding to surface B-cell receptors. Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder could appear and it has a multiclonal potentiality that may develop into different types of lymphomas. The hematopoietic stem cell transplant made for lymphoma in HCV-infected patients can increase the risk of earlier progression to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. HCV infected patients with indolent BCNHL who receive antiviral therapy can be potentially cured. Viral clearance was related to lymphoma response, fact that highlights the probable involvement of HCV in lymphomagenesis. BACKGROUND Millions of people have died of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-Co V-2)infection,and retrospective studies of the disease in local regions are *** To characterize the epidemiological features and dynamic changes in blood biochemical indices for SARS-Co V-2-infected patients in Hebi,a representative city with a large floating population in North *** From January 25 to February 10,2020,the clinical data of patients who tested positive for SARS-Co V-2 by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction in Hebi city(China)were evaluated at admission,and laboratory data for hematologic parameters,inflammatory indices,coagulation function indices,liver function indices,blood lipid indices,renal function indices,myocardial enzyme activities and five blood biochemical markers of immunity were evaluated at admission,upon hospitalization and before *** Sixteen confirmed COVID-19 patients developed pneumonia but were cured after adequate *** and fatigue were the common *** most common laboratory abnormalities of patients at admission were leukopenia,eosinopenia,decreased percentage of eosinophils,elevated high sensitivity C-reactive protein and fibrinogen levels,hypoalbuminemia,mildly increased aspartate transferase activity and levels of bilirubin,and increased levels ofβ***,aggravated liver dysfunction was detected in most patients,which may be partially attributed to virus infection as well as medicinal *** This study provides several potential diagnostic markers and dynamic biochemical indices of disease progression to better prevent,diagnose and treat COVID-19 infection.

High Prevalent Hypovitaminosis D Is Associated with Dysregulation of Calcium-parathyroid Hormone-vitamin D Axis in Patients with Chronic liver Diseases

A new scoring system for assessment of liver function after successful hepatectomy in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND:Whether a major liver resection is safe has been judged mainly from the patient’s hepatic ***,a safe limit for liver resection does not exist *** study aimed to construct a new scoring system as a guide to determine a safe limit for liver resection and avoid liver dysfunction after ***:Eighty-six patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who had undergone hepatectomy in West China Hospital from March 2007 to June 2010 were *** patients were classified according to the levels of total bilirubin after hepatectomy and the parameters in the perioperative period were *** operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was made to assess the liver function compensatory (LFC) value to predict liver dysfunction of the patients after *** value is defined as the preoperative KICG value×22.487+standard remnant liver volume (SRLV)×***:Patients were classified into group Ⅰ (normal group,n=69) and group Ⅱ (with total bilirubin >85.5 μmol/L for 7 days after hepatectomy,n=17) based on the levels of total bilirubin after *** II was further divided into two subgroups:recovered subgroup (n=14) and fatal subgroup (n=3).There were no significant differences in preoperative data or intraoperative findings except the indocyanine green test parameters (KICG and ICG R15) and *** analysis showed that the sensitivity and specificity of an LFC value ≤13.01 were 94.1% and 82.6% respectively for predicting liver dysfunction of the patients after ***:The LFC value appears to be a good predictor of postoperative liver dysfunction in patients who undergo hepatectomy for *** expected LFC value of 13.01 seems to be a safe limit for liver resection.
