Fine Root Distribution Pattern of Different Aged leucaena leucocephala Trees in Debris Flow Source Area in Jiangjia Gully, China

Fine root is critical to restrain soil erosion and its distribution pattern is of great influence on the restraining effects. This study studied the fine root biomass （Br） distribution of different aged leucaena leucocephala （5, 10, 15 years） in debris flow source area in Jiangjia Gully by digging downward to the bottom at different distances to stem in three directions on slope. The results showed the Br increased dramatically by 143% from 5 years to lO years and then rose slowly by 38% from to years to 15 years. The Br of 5 years was significantly asymmetric between uphill and alonghill directions, but there was little difference among directions for other ages, and a concentration trend appeared to exist in downhill and alonghill directions. Moreover, fine root （D≤1 mm） was significantly heavier than that of fine root （1mm〈D〈2 ram）, playing a leading role in the vertical distribution of the whole fine root, with a logarithmic or an exponential function. The results presented may shed light on fine root distribution pattern and evaluation of its effect on slope stability in debris flow source area.

Lignin extraction from bark can maximize the utilization of biomass waste,offer cost-effectiveness,and promote environmental friendliness when employed as an adhesive material in bark particleboard *** of fine(0.2 to 1.0 mm),medium(1.0 to 2.5 mm),and coarse(2.5 to 12.0 mm)sizes,derived from the bark of leucaena leucocephala,were hot-pressed using a heating plate at 175℃for 7 min to create single-layer particleboards measuring 320 mm×320 mm×10 mm,targeting a density of 700 kg/m^(3).Subsequently,the samples were trimmed and conditioned at 20℃and 65%relative *** this study,we compared bark particleboard bonded with urea formaldehyde(UF)adhesive to fine-sized particleboard bonded with demethylated lignin *** results indicated that bark particleboards utilizing demethylated lignin and UF adhesives exhibited similar *** particleboard showed differences in modulus of elasticity(MOE)and modulus of rupture(MOR),while medium-sized particles exhibited significant variations in moisture content(MC)and water absorption(WA).Furthermore,the thickness swelling of coarse and medium-sized particles under wet and oven-dried conditions exhibited notable ***,the demethylated lignin adhesive extracted from *** bark demonstrated similar quality to UF adhesive,with particle size correlating inversely to the strength of the bark particleboard.

Condensed tannins(CTs)are one of the promising compounds due to their potentially health-promoting *** this study,CTs were extracted from a leucaena leucocephala hybrid-Rendang and subjected to various biological studies including antioxidant(using Ferric reducing antioxidant power(FRAP),DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay),anti-microbial(against different pathogens)and cytotoxic activities(toward human breast adenocarcinoma(MCF-7),human colon carcinoma(HT29),human cervical carcinoma(HeLa)and human liver carcinoma(HepG2)cell lines)in cancer cells through in vitro *** structural characteristics and purity of CTs extract were determined using 13C *** results showed that CTs exhibited higher in vitro antioxidant activities(2257.12±80.55 mg TEAC/g extract,605.3±1.82 mg TEAC/g extract and 1014.03±1.20 mg TEAC/g extract in FRAP,ABTS and DPPH assay,respectively)and demonstrated anti-microbial activities toward selected Gram’s positive and Gram’s negative bacteria tested with MIC and MBC value at 6.25–50 mg/***,among other selected cancer cells,CTs also demonstrated cytotoxic activity toward human breast cancer cells(MCF-7)(IC50=38.33±2.08mg/mL).Characteristic of apoptosis such as cell shrinkage,nuclear condensation and apoptotic bodies were shown in *** preliminary investigations have provided scientific rationale to use CTs as an alternative therapy for various oxidative and inflammatory associated diseases.©2016 Beijing Academy of Food *** and hosting by Elsevier *** rights reserved.

Based on the theory of ecology, this article conducted a landscape ecological evaluation on leucaena leucocephala artificial forest in the add-hot valley, Yuanmou Xiaokua hill, using a combination method of qualitative analysis and landscape comprehensive evaluation. The comprehensive evaluation indexes of landscape include forest coverage, biodiversity, stability, soil erosion, environmental quality, availability, scientific research characteristic, economic benefits. Using AHP （analytical hierarchy process）, determine the grade of ecological evaluation factors and the weight of evaluation index and calculate the CEI （comprehensive evaluation index） on ecological evaluation. Evaluation results showed that the area CEI was 0.714 225, a better quality of the ecological level, but biodiversity indicators was the lowest. To sum up, it was difficult to maintain ecological restoration effectiveness and process but also guarantee a good biodiversity in the add-hot valleys. We must reasonably arrange the alien species and the native species, in order to obtain a stable and sustainable eco-system.

Effects of sludge on germination and initial growth performance of leucaena leucocephala seedlings in the nursery

A study was carried out to determine the influence of different types of sludges （municipal, industrial and residential） on field germination, growth and nodulation of L. leucocephala seedlings in the nursery. Before sowing of seeds, different combinations of sludges were incorporated with the nutrient deficient natural forest soils. Field germination, nodulation status and physical growth parameters of seedlings （shoot and root length, vigor index, collar diameter, leaf number, fresh and dry weight of shoot and root and total dry biomass increment） were recorded after three and six months of seed sowing. Field germination, nodulation status and growth parameters were varied significantly in the soil amended with sludges in comparison to control. The highest number of nodule was recorded from soil amended with residential sludge （ 1：1 ） and highest fresh and dry nodule weight was also found from the same combination in both three and six month old seedlings. In case of growth parameters, the highest growth was recorded from soil and residential sludge （ 1：1 ） combination compared to control. From the study, it can be recommended that soil amended with residential sludge （ 1：1 ） provide better field germination, growth and nodule formation of L. leucocephala in degraded soil.

Spread of common native and invasive grasses and ruderal trees following anthropogenic disturbances in a tropical dry forest

We investigated the constituents of leucaena leucocephala foliage collected from Guangdong province in China,and isolated seventeen diverse flavonoids（1-17）,including flavones（5-9,11,and 12）,flavonols（1,10 and 16）,flavanone 4,flavanonol 15 and flavonol glycosides（2,3,13,14 and 17）.Flavonoids quercetin（1）,quercetin-3-O-α-rhamnopyranoside（2）,and myricetin-3-O-α-rhamnopyranoside（17） were the maj or flavonoids components in *** leaves,at a total concentration of about 2.5% of dry ***-Luc inductive activity to mimic the activation of erythropoietin（EPO） gene,anti-inflammatory,anti-diabetic,and antioxidant activities of isolated flavonoids（1-17） were *** 7,10 and 13 could strongly induce the transcriptional activity of pHRE-Luc,which indicated their potential to induce the expression of *** 7,10,13,and 17 displayed strong anti-inflammatory activity,relatively equal to the positive control *** 1,2,3,11,12,16,and 17 showed stronger antioxidant activities of DPPH radical scavenging capacity than ascorbic *** 1,2 and 10 showed weak cellular antioxidant activities against tert-butyl hydroperoxide（tBHP） induced ROS *** rhamnoside 2 and arabinoside 3 undergone deglycosylation to the aglycone quercetin under anaerobic incubation with cattle rumen ***,the potential health benefits for ruminant of flavonoids,which was rich in *** foliage,was also discussed.

Introduction:A fundamental challenge to the integrity of tropical dry forest ecosystems is the invasion of nonnative grass *** grasses compete for resources and fuel anthropogenic *** 2012,a bulldozer from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority cleared a 570-m trail from a state road into a mature dry forest section of Guánica Forest to control a *** monitored colonization by a non-native invasive grass(Megathyrsus maximus),a highly invasive tree(leucaena leucocephala),and a native grass(Uniola virgata),as well as natural regeneration,along the bulldozer *** determined whether bulldozing facilitated colonization by these species into the forest and the extent of ***:Distance from propagule source and temporal variations strongly influenced colonization by our three focal *** maximus invaded along the trail from source populations by the state *** establishment of new colonies of *** seedlings went as far as 570 m inside the forest(i.e.,at the end of the bulldozer trail),but we found most new colonies within 270 m of the *** leucocephala exhibited a similar spreading *** disturbance,Uniola virgata was distributed widely across the forest,but the highest densities were found in areas near the latter portion(>401 m)of the bulldozer ***,the species formed new clumps along more than half of the trail(250 to 570 m),apparently colonizing from undisturbed patches ***:Bulldozing facilitated the invasion of non-native *** projected community assemblage will be more fire-prone than before since *** carries fire across the landscape better than ***,emphasizing the capacity of invasive plant colonization to alter local ecological processes after only a single wildfire and bulldoze *** results provide a valuable baseline for short-term vegetation response to anthropogenic disturbances in tropical semi-deciduous dry forests.

The present study was undertaken to determine the effects of different levels of urea-N fertilizer in addition to ipil-ipil tree litter on yield of rice and insect prevalence. The field study was conducted at the Agroforestry Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during July-December 2004. The treatments included 0, 90, 180, and 270 kg urea per hectare. All four treatments received five tons ipil-ipil tree litter per hectare. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design （RCBD） with four replications. The results showed that the different treatments significantly influenced the yield and yield component viz. total tillers/hill, effective tillers/hill, filled grains and unfilled grains/panicle. The highest yield of 4.62 t·h^m-2 with an increase of 21.57% over the control was recorded in treatment 180 kg urea·h^m-2, which was statistically similar to treatment 90 kg urea·h^m-2. The prevalence of insects viz. green leafhopper, brown plant hopper, rice bugs, leaf folder and stem borers were mostly correlated with N-levels. The prevalence of insects in general gradu- ally increased with the increase of N. Therefore, this study suggests that the combined application of organic materials （tree litter of ipil-ipil） and N-fertilizer of 90 kg·h^m-2 may oroduce good yield while minimizine insect arevalence in the rice field.

This study was conducted to evaluate the physiological quality of forage seeds after passage through the gastrointestinal tract of cattle, as well as the emergence of seedlings derived from these seeds. Three Fabaceae species were used: tropical kudzu, leucaena and calopo. One hundred grams of seeds of each species were offered, separately, to five bovines. After the start of the dispersion, the faeces of the animals were collected every 6 hours, in a total of 72 hours, being taken to the greenhouse immediately after each collection. The study evaluated the total number of seedlings in the stool, the lengths of roots and aerial parts, as well as the natural and dry seedling weight thirty days after the disposal of the faeces in the greenhouse. The experimental design consisted of randomized blocks, with twelve treatments (sampling periods) and five replications (cattle). The best performance for the total number of seedlings in the faeces of cattle was observed in the kudzu species. The length of the root, length of the aerial part and dry matter seedling weight was observed in the leucaena species, followed by kudzu. The calopo showed low results for all variables due to the high degradation of the seeds.
