Assessment of SARS-CoV-2 RNA shedding in semen of 36 males with symptomatic,asymptomatic,and convalescent infection during the first and second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Italy

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)receptor,angiotensin-converting enzyme 2(ACE2),has been identified in the human testis,but the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 through sexual intercourse still needs to be defined.The goal of our study was to determine if SARS-CoV-2 is detectable in the semen of patients suffering or recovering from coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19),still testing positive at nasopharyngeal swabs but showing mild or no symptoms at the time of sampling.Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in semen was performed by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)and nested PCR targeting open reading frame(ORF)1ab.Medical history of the enrolled patients was taken,including COVID-19-correlated symptoms,both at the time of diagnosis and at the time of interview.Results of real-time RT-PCR and nested PCR in semen showed no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the 36 patients suffering or recovering from COVID-19 but still positive in a nasopharyngeal swab,from over 116 patients enrolled in the study.SARS-CoV-2 detection and persistence in semen would have an impact on both clinical practice and public health strategies,but our results would suggest that SARS-CoV-2 is not present in the semen of men recovering from COVID-19.

Short-term forecast in the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy. Application of a weighted and cumulative average daily growth rate to an exponential decay model

To estimate the size of the novel coronavirus(COVID-19)outbreak in the early stage in Italy,this paper introduces the cumulated and weighted average daily growth rate(WR)to evaluate an epidemic curve.On the basis of an exponential decay model(EDM),we provide estimations of the WR in four-time intervals from February 27 to April 07,2020.By calibrating the parameters of the EDM to the reported data in Hubei Province of China,we also attempt to forecast the evolution of the outbreak.We compare the EDM applied to WR and the Gompertz model,which is based on exponential decay and is often used to estimate cumulative events.Specifically,we assess the performance of each model to short-term forecast of the epidemic,and to predict the final epidemic size.Based on the official counts for confirmed cases,the model applied to data from February 27 until the 17th of March estimate that the cumulative number of infected in Italy could reach 131,280(with a credibility interval 71,415-263,501)by April 25(credibility interval April 12 to May 3).With the data available until the 24st of March the peak date should be reached on May 3(April 23 to May 23)with 197,179 cumulative infections expected(130,033e315,269);with data available until the 31st of March the peak should be reached on May 4(April 25 to May 18)with 202,210 cumulative infections expected(155.235 e270,737);with data available until the 07st of April the peak should be reached on May 3(April 26 toMay 11)with 191,586(160,861-232,023)cumulative infections expected.Based on the average mean absolute percentage error(MAPE),cumulated infections forecasts provided by the EDM applied to WR performed better across all scenarios than the Gompertz model.An exponential decay model applied to the cumulated and weighted average daily growth rate appears to be useful in estimating the number of cases and peak of the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy and the model was more reliable in the exponential growth phase.

An evaluation of COVID-19 in Italy:A data-driven modeling analysis

The novel coronavirus(COVID-19)that has been spreading worldwide since December 2019 has sickened millions of people,lock down major cities and some countries,prompted unprecedented global travel restrictions.Real data-driven modeling is an effort to help evaluate and curb the spread of the novel virus.Lockdowns and the effectiveness of reduction in the contacts in Italy has been measured via our modified model,with the addition of auxiliary and state variables that represent,contacts with infected,conversion rate and latent propagation.Results show the decrease in infected people due to stay-athome orders and tracing quarantine intervention.The effect of quarantine and centralized medical treatment was also measured through numerical modeling analysis.

Italy is significantly affected by ever-present flood and landslide risks and has experienced many disasters. Local social awareness and engagement, however,differ and need to be increased by decision makers and citizens through improvements in risk preparedness. With this aim, the #italiasicura web platform was developed by Fondazione Politecnico di Milano and released in 2015 to show country to local level hazard maps and risk reduction projects in Italy. Any stage of the user experience with the platform can be shared via social media. Using this tool, an awareness-oriented web analytics process was structured to develop a set of indicators for the increase of knowledge linked to flood and landslide hazards. In so doing, it is possible to measure community disaster awareness actions and competence in the area of hazard knowledge. This article presents the results obtained by using data from the platform.

How the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the colorectal cancer screening in Italy:A minireview

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic has caused detrimental effects on many aspects of healthcare practice.Screening programs for the commonest malignancies,namely colorectal cancer(CRC),breast cancer and cervical cancer have been discontinued or interrupted since the beginning of restriction measures aimed to limit transmission of the new coronavirus infection.Robust evidence exists in favour of the role of screening campaigns in reducing mortality from CRC.In fact,the majority of pre-malignant lesions of the colon and rectum can be diagnosed with colonoscopy and treated by endoscopic or surgical resection.Besides,colonoscopy screening allows the diagnosis of CRCs in their pre-clinical stage.Italy was one of the first European countries where a high level of COVID-19 infections and deaths was observed,and one of the first where lockdowns and strict measures were adopted to reduce the risk of COVID-19 diffusion among the population.A systematic review of the literature was performed,including the PubMed,Scopus,Web of Sciences,and Reference Citation Analysis databases,with the aim of critically evaluating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CRC screening in Italy.We found that reduction of CRC screening activity surpassed 50%in most endoscopic units,with almost 600000 fewer CRC screening exams conducted in the first 5 mo of 2020 vs the same period of 2019.While the consequences of the discontinuation of endoscopy screening for the prognosis and mortality of CRC will be evident in the next few years,recent data confirm that CRC is currently treated at a more advanced stage than in the pre-COVID-19 era.Since delays in CRC prevention and early diagnosis may translate to increased CRC-specific mortality,world healthcare systems should adopt strategies to maintain the regularity of CRC screening during subsequent peaks of the COVID-19 pandemic,or future events that might hamper screening programs.

During a microfungi survey in the Province of Forlì-Cesena,Italy,a diatrypaceous taxon was collected on a dead branch of Quercus cerris(Fagaceae,Fagales).Phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS andβ-tubulin sequence data identified the taxon as Diatrypella macrospora.This represents a new host and geographical record for D.macrospora.This new collection is similar to the holotype,but differs in having shorter perithecial necks and smaller ascospores with marked curvature.In this account,a detailed description,colour photographs and phylogenetic analyses are provided to represent the new record of D.macrospora.

Electricity demand, GDP and employment： evidence from Italy

This paper applies time series methodologies to examine the causal relationship among electricity demand, real per capita GDP and total labor force for Italy from 1970 to 2009. After a brief introduction, a survey of the economic literature on this issue is reported, before discussing the data and introducing the econometric techniques used. The results of estimation indicate that one cointegrating relationship exists among these variables. This equilibrium relation implies that, in the long-run, GDP and labor force are correlated negatively, as well as GDP and electricity. Moreover, there is a bi-directional Granger causality flow between real per capita GDP and electricity demand; while labor force does not Granger- cause neither real per capita GDP nor electricity demand. This implies that electricity demand and economic growth are jointly determined at the same time for the Italian case. The forecast error variance decomposition shows that forecast errors in real per capita GDP are mainly caused by the uncertainty in GDP itself, while forecast errors in labor force are mainly resulted from the labor force itself, although aggregate income and electricity are important, too.

The Processes Behind Community Building and Place Making in Transitional Urban Moments: A Comparison Between China and Italy

The establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, the transition from a planned economy to a market economy at the end of the 1970 s, and the pursuit of a broader contact with the outside world are all moments which brought considerable changes to the Chinese urban context on various scales.The shaping of the physical environment witnessed significant changes and transitions;however, some urban elements like the enclosure, the wall, and the gate persisted, and their existence is unquestionable in today’s Chinese cities.The concept of collectivism, anatomized from its very traditional meaning, was transformed by the socialist ideology first, and then the market-oriented philosophy later to a tool for the redefinition of the meaning of community and community building in the mutable urban context.Similarly, since the reconstruction after World War II, Italy witnessed big changes as well as the search for an urban modernity and identity, emphasizing a strong link between physical form and community building.This paper, using a comparative approach, opts to analyze how existing urban concepts have been transformed and how new mechanisms and processes emerged in community building and place making in China, focusing on the socialist and post-socialist periods, and in Italy, focusing on the aftermath of WWII till the late 1970s.The new social and urban challenges imposed by the transitional circumstances led to the adoption of alternative paradigms in both cases.In China, comprehensive development and the re-discovery of the human dimension of cities became an important focus, while the re-invention of traditional urban forms and the humanistic dimension of industrialization became one of the main concepts in community building and place making in the Italian urban context.
