Phase field modeling of ferroelastic variant switching in yttria-stabilized t'zirconia with strain gradient elasticity and interface tension

The 6–8 wt%yttria-stabilized zirconia with a tetragonal structure(t’-YSZ)is extensively employed in thermal barrier *** exceptional fracture toughness of t’-YSZ can be attributed to its distinctive ferroelastic toughening *** and interface tension play a critical role in ferroelastic variant switching at the micro-and *** paper presents an original thermodynamically consistent phase field(PF)theory for analyzing ferroelastic variant switching at the micro-and nano-scale of t’-*** theory incorporates strain gradient elasticity using higher-order elastic energy and interface tension tensor via geometric nonlinearity to represent biaxial tension resulting from interface ***,a mixed-type formulation is employed to implement the higher-order theory through the finite element *** an interface in equilibrium,the effects of strain gradient elasticity result in a more uniform distribution of stresses,whereas the presence of interface tension tensor significantly amplifies the stress magnitude at the *** introduction of an interface tension tensor increases the maximum value of stress at the interface by a factor of 4 to *** nucleation and evolution of variants at a pre-existing crack tip in a mono-phase t’-YSZ have also been *** strain gradient elasticity is capable of capturing the size effect of ferroelastic variant switching associated with microstructures in ***,when the grain size approaches that of the specimen,the critical load required for variant switching at the crack tip increases,resulting in greater dissipation of elastic energy during ferroelastic variant ***,the interface tension accelerates the evolution of *** presented framework exhibits significant potential in modeling ferroelastic variant switching at the micro-and nano-scale.

A Kinetic Model for Describing the Effect of Proteins on the Air-Water interface tension

The main objective of this work was to develop a kinetic model to describe the variation of the surface tension in an air-water interface due to the adsorption of proteins from different origins and to identify quantitatively the relevant parameters, it was considered that the processes of adsorption, unfolding and reordering of the protein molecule in the interface occur simultaneously. The model used in the present work to calculate the surface tension postulates the existence of two simultaneous processes, adsorption and protein rearrangement represented with an equation of first order with two exponential components. The relevant parameter of the equation are ka and kr-the rate constants of the two first order kinetic phases that correspond to both conformational states of the protein, adsorption and rearrangement during the process of variation of the surface tension, and the amplitude parameters Aa and Ar. The results suggest that the kinetic model for the variation of the surface tension of protein solutions proposed in this work, with two simultaneous first order processes, is more appropriate than previous models to describe such variation.

In vitro Blood Compatibility of Polyethylene Terephthalate with Covalently Bounded Hirudin on Surface

Polyethylene terephthalate （PET,Dacron） was modified by surface immobilization of hirudin with glutaraldehyde（GA） as coupling reagent to improve the blood ***-immobilized PETs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） and contact angle *** blood compatibility of the PETs was evaluated by platelet adhesion evaluation and fibrinogen conformational change measurements in *** results showed the decrease of platelet adhesion and activation on hirudin-immobilized PET with increasing of glutaraldehyde *** experiment showed that fibrinogen adherence and conformational changes of PET-HRD were less than those of untreated PET,which made the materials difficult to form *** proper reason of blood compatibility improvement was low interface tension between hirudin-immobilized PETs and blood,as well as blood proteins,and low ratio of dispersive/polar component of the surface energy（γsd/γsp） and high hydrophilicity.

Influence of solution treatment on microstructure and properties of in-situ Mg_2Si/AZ91D composites

The influence of solution treatment on the microstructure and properties of Mg2Si/AZ91D composites fabricated from Mg-SiO2 system via in-situ processing method was *** results show that coarse Chinese script shape Mg2Si phases can be formed by adding SiO2 into AZ91D magnesium alloy with Si content up to 1.5% of the alloy *** solution treatment,the morphology and distribution of the coarse Chinese script shape Mg2Si phases are ***,the β-Mg17Al12 phase is dissolved into the magnesium *** increasing holding time,the coarse Mg2Si phases tend to dissolve,break and *** solution treatment at 420 ℃ for 16 h,Mg2Si phases become the finest and relatively well-distributed *** tensile strength and elongation are increased by 14.9% and 38.9%,*** is believed that the Mg2Si phases continuously dissolve and break,and finally the spheroidized Mg2Si particles are obtained due to the interface tension of Mg2Si/Mg interface.

Zwitterionic gemini surfactant with different hydrophobic tails(C-8, C-12 and CA-12) were synthesized by using ethylene glycol, phosohorus trichloride, oxygen, et al. as reactants. They were structurally characterized by IR,EA, 1H NMR, and 31 P NMR. Surface tension and oil/water interface tension were fully studied. The cmc of the synthesized surfactants evaluated by surface tension measurements ranges from 2.17×10-4 mol L-1 to 5.36×10-4 mol L-1 and the cmc surface tension values(γcmc) ranges from 26.49 m N m-1 to 29.06 m N m-1, which show excellent efficiency at reducing the water surface tension among the comparison surfactants. And on the other hand, all the surfactants can efficiently reduce the oil/water interface tension.
