The novel coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)is still rampant all over the world,causing incalculable losses to the world.Major pharmaceutical organizations around the globe are focusing on vaccine research and drug development to prevent further damage caused by the pandemic.The messenger RNA(mRNA)technology has got ample of attention after the success of the two very effective mRNA vaccines during the recent pandemic of COVID-19.mRNA vaccine has been promoted to the core stage of pharmaceutical industry,and the rapid development of mRNA technology has exceeded expectations.Beyond COVID-19,the mRNA vaccine has been tested for various Infectious Diseases and undergoing clinical trials.Due to the ability of constant mutation,the viral infections demand abrupt responses and immediate production,and therefore mRNA-based technology offers best answers to sudden outbreaks.The need for mRNA-based vaccine became more obvious due to the recent emergence of new Omicron variant.In this review,we summarized the unique properties of mRNA-based vaccines for Infectious Diseases,delivery technologies,discussed current challenges,and highlighted the prospects of this promising technology in the future.We also discussed various clinical studies as well preclinical studies conducted on mRNA therapeutics for diverse Infectious Diseases.

Despite multiple virus outbreaks over the past decade,including the devastating coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,the lack of accurate and timely diagnosis and treatment technologies has wreaked havoc on global biosecurity.The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats(CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated proteins(Cas)system has the potential to address these critical needs for tackling Infectious Diseases to detect viral nucleic acids and inhibit viral replication.This review summarizes how the CRISPR/Cas system is being utilized for the treatment and diagnosis of Infectious Diseases with the help of biosafety materials and highlights the design principle and in vivo and in vitro efficacy of advanced biosafety materials used to deal with virus attacks.

Recent Infectious Disease outbreaks,such as COVID-19 and Ebola,have highlighted the need for rapid and accurate diagnosis to initiate treatment and curb transmission.Successful diagnostic strategies critically depend on the efficiency of biological sampling and timely analysis.However,current diagnostic techniques are invasive/intrusive and present a severe bottleneck by requiring specialist equipment and trained personnel.Moreover,centralised test facilities are poorly accessible and the requirement to travel may increase disease transmission.Self-administrable,point-of-care(PoC)microneedle diagnostic devices could provide a viable solution to these problems.These miniature needle arrays can detect biomarkers in/from the skin in a minimally invasive manner to provide(near-)real-time diagnosis.Few microneedle devices have been developed specifically for Infectious Disease diagnosis,though similar technologies are well established in other fields and generally adaptable for Infectious Disease diagnosis.These include microneedles for biofluid extraction,microneedle sensors and analyte-capturing microneedles,or combinations thereof.Analyte sampling/detection from both blood and dermal interstitial fluid is possible.These technologies are in their early stages of development for Infectious Disease diagnostics,and there is a vast scope for further development.In this review,we discuss the utility and future outlook of these microneedle technologies in Infectious Disease diagnosis.

Helicobacter pylori infection is an Infectious Disease.Given the alarmingly high antibiotic resistance in H.pylori,gastroenterologists should change the empiric H.pylori treatment paradigm to an antimicrobial susceptibility testing-guided precision treatment.Antimicrobial stewardship programs for H.pylori should be implemented locally,regionally,and nationally to monitor the antibiotic resistance pattern.

Hospitals’responsibility in response to the threat of Infectious Disease outbreak in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic:implications for low-and middle-income countries

The WHO declared the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak as a public health emergency of international concern on January 30,2020,and then a pandemic on March 11,2020.COVID-19 affected over 200 countries and territories worldwide,with 25,541,380 confirmed cases and 852,000 deaths associated with COVID-19 globally,as of September 1,2020.1 While facing such a public health emergency,hospitals were on the front line to deliver health care and psychological services.The early detection,diagnosis,reporting,isolation,and clinical management of patients during a public health emergency required the extensive involvement of hospitals in all aspects.The response capacity of hospitals directly determined the outcomes of the prevention and control of an outbreak.The COVID-19 pandemic has affected almost all nations and territories regardless of their development level or geographic location,although suitable risk mitigation measures differ between developing and developed countries.In low-and middle-income countries(LMICs),the consequences of the pandemic could be more complicated because incidence and mortality might be associated more with a fragile health care system and shortage of related resources.2-3 As evidenced by the situation in Bangladesh,India,Kenya,South Africa,and other LMICs,socioeconomic status(SES)disparity was a major factor in the spread of disease,potentially leading to alarmingly insufficient preparedness and responses in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.4 Conversely,the pandemic might also bring more unpredictable socioeconomic and long-term impacts in LMICs,and those with lower SES fare worse in these situations.This review aimed to summarize the responsibilities of and measures taken by hospitals in combatting the COVID-19 outbreak.Our findings are hoped to provide experiences,as well as lessons and potential implications for LMICs.

The Cognitive Evolution from“Plague”to“Infectious Disease”

According to the Grand Chinese Dictionary,plague is defined to be an acute Infectious Disease.The Chinese term“Infectious Disease”is not what it is commonly thought originated from Japanese.The medical nomenclature shift from the traditional“plague”to the modern“Infectious Disease”is completed by the medical missionaries,Chinese scholars,and the national authority,each utilising different strategies.It is a history of acceptance concerning the concept of“Infectious Disease”from academia to national level.The conscious use of Infectious Disease-related thought and terminology by Chinese officials and doctors when studying Infectious Disease is a scientific modernization towards the understanding of epidemics.In a sense,this evolution of medical knowledge embodies the modernization of Infectious Disease in China.

In 2008 the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical diseases(TDR)commissioned ten think-tanks to work on disease-specific and thematic reference groups to identify top research priorities that would advance the research agenda on Infectious Diseases of poverty,thus contributing to improvements in human health.The first of the thematic reference group reports-on environment,agriculture and Infectious Diseases of poverty-was recently released.In this article we review,from an insider perspective,the strengths and weaknesses of this thematic reference group report and highlight key messages for policy-makers,funders and researchers.

Climate change and Infectious Disease: a review of evidence and research trends

Background Climate change presents an imminent threat to almost all biological systems across the globe.In recent years there have been a series of studies showing how changes in climate can impact Infectious Disease transmission.Many of these publications focus on simulations based on in silico data,shadowing empirical research based on feld and laboratory data.A synthesis work of empirical climate change and Infectious Disease research is still lacking.Methods We conducted a systemic review of research from 2015 to 2020 period on climate change and Infectious Diseases to identify major trends and current gaps of research.Literature was sourced from Web of Science and PubMed literary repositories using a key word search,and was reviewed using a delineated inclusion criteria by a team of reviewers.Results Our review revealed that both taxonomic and geographic biases are present in climate and Infectious Disease research,specifcally with regard to types of disease transmission and localities studied.Empirical investigations on vector-borne diseases associated with mosquitoes comprised the majority of research on the climate change and Infectious Disease literature.Furthermore,demographic trends in the institutions and individuals published revealed research bias towards research conducted across temperate,high-income countries.We also identifed key trends in funding sources for most resent literature and a discrepancy in the gender identities of publishing authors which may refect current systemic inequities in the scientifc feld.Conclusions Future research lines on climate change and Infectious Diseases should considered diseases of direct transmission(non-vector-borne)and more research efort in the tropics.Inclusion of local research in low-and middle-income countries was generally neglected.Research on climate change and Infectious Disease has failed to be socially inclusive,geographically balanced,and broad in terms of the disease systems studied,limiting our capacities to better understand the actual efects o

Surveillance is critical for the prevention and control of Infectious Disease.China’s real-time web-based Infectious Disease reporting system is a distinguished achievement.However,many aspects of the current China Infectious Disease Surveillance System do not yet meet the demand for timely outbreak detection and identification of emerging infectious ***,the national molecular typing network for foodborne disease surveillance was first established by the Centers for disease Control and Prevention of the United States in 1995 and has proven valuable in the early detection of outbreaks and tracing the pathogen source.Since 2001,the China CDC laboratory for bacterial pathogen analysis has been a member of the PulseNet International family;and has been adapting the idea and methodology of PulseNet to develop a model for a future national laboratory-based surveillance system for all bacterial Infectious Disease.We summarized the development progress for the PulseNet China system and discussed it as a model for the future of China’s national laboratory-based surveillance system.

Military-civilian cooperative emergency response to Infectious Disease prevention and control in China

In recent years, the incidence of severe Infectious Diseases has increased, and the number of emerging Infectious Diseases continues to increase. The Chinese government and military forces have paid a great deal of attention to Infectious Disease prevention and control, and using military-civilian cooperation, they have successfully prevented numerous severe epidemic situations, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome(SARS), influenza A(H1N1), avian influenza H5N1 and H7N9, and Ebola hemorrhagic fever, while actively maintained public health, economic development, and national construction. This paper focuses on the mechanisms of the military-cooperative emergency response to Infectious Diseases–the joint working mechanism, the information-sharing mechanism, the research collaboration mechanism, and the joint disposal mechanism–and presents a sorted summary of the practices and experiences of cooperative emergency responses to Infectious Diseases. In the future, the Chinese military and the civilian sector will further strengthen the cooperative joint command system and emergency rescue force and will reinforce their collaborative information-sharing platform and technical equipment system to further improve military-civilian collaborative emergency Infectious Diseases disposal, advance the level of Infectious Disease prevention and control, and maintain public health.
