Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas *** parasite requires the intracellular niche in order to proliferate and disseminate the *** invasion,*** resides temporarily in an acidic vacuole which is lysed by a not well-understood *** electron microscopy was used to describe the process of *** escape from the parasitophorous vacuole over the *** HeLa(non-professional phagocytic cells)as host cell,we observed that recently internalized parasites reside in a membrane-bounded vacuole.A few hours later,the first sign of vacuole disruption appeared as membrane *** observation was followed by a progressive vacuole swelling as evidenced by an electron-lucent halo between the parasite and the vacuole ***,the vacuole membrane remnants reorganized as small vesicles that eventually disappeared from the vicinity of the ***,parasites reach the host cell cytosol where replication takes *** thorough ultrastructural description of this process set the base for a comprehensive understanding of the parasite-host cell interaction and,thus open the possibility of new therapeutic intervention strategies.

The outbreak of a novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19,caused by the 2019-nCoV infection)in December 2019 is one of the most severe public health emergencies since the founding of People’s Republic of China in *** personnel(HCP)nationwide are facing heavy workloads and high risk of infection,especially those who care for patients in Hubei ***,as of February 20,2020,over two thousand COVID-19 cases are confirmed among HCP from 476 hospitals nationwide,with nearly 90%of them from Hubei *** on literature search and interviews with some HCP working at Wuhan,capital city of Hubei,we have summarized some of the effective measures taken to reduce infection among HCP,and also made suggestions for improving occupational safety during an infectious disease *** experience and lessons learned should be a valuable asset for international health community to contain the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic around the world.

Tuberculosis(TB)is one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the *** meta-bolic disease type 2 diabetes(T2D)significantly increases the risk of developing ac-tive *** new TB vaccine candidates and novel therapeutic interventions are required to meet the challenges of global TB *** evidence suggests that the microbiota plays a significant role in how the host responds to infection,in-jury and neoplastic *** models that closely reflect human physiology are crucial in assessing new treatments and to decipher the underlying immunological defects responsible for increased TB susceptibility in comorbid *** this study,using a diet-induced murine T2D model that reflects the etiopathogenesis of clinical T2D and increased TB susceptibility,we investigated how the intestinal microbiota may impact the development of T2D,and how the gut microbial composition changes following a very low-dose aerosol infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis(Mtb).Our data revealed a substantial intestinal microbiota dysbiosis in T2D mice compared to non-diabetic *** observed differences were comparable to previous clini-cal reports in TB patients,in which it was shown that Mtb infection causes rapid loss of microbial ***,diversity index and principle component analyses demonstrated distinct clustering of Mtb-infected non-diabetic mice ***-infected T2D *** findings support a broad applicability of T2D mice as a tractable small animal model for studying distinct immune parameters,microbiota and the immune-metabolome of TB/T2D *** model may also enable answers to be found to critical outstanding questions about targeted interventions of the gut mi-crobiota and the gut-lung axis.

A discrete-time susceptible-infectious-recovered-susceptible model for the analysis of influenza data

We develop a discrete time compartmental model to describe the spread of seasonal influenza *** time and disease state variables are assumed to be discrete,this model is considered to be a discrete time,stochastic,Susceptible-infectious-RecoveredSusceptible(DT-SIRS)model,where weekly counts of disease are assumed to follow a Poisson *** allow the disease transmission rate to also vary over time,and the disease can only be reintroduced after extinction if there is a contact with infected individuals from other host *** capture the variability of influenza activities from one season to the next,we define the seasonality with a 4-week period effect that may change over *** examine three different transmission rates and compare their performance to that of existing *** though there is limited information for susceptible and recovered individuals,we demonstrate that the simple models for transmission rates effectively capture the behaviour of the disease *** use a Bayesian approach for *** framework is applied in an analysis of the temporal spread of influenza in the province of Manitoba,Canada,2012e2015.

We used reported behavioural data from cisgender men who have sex with men and transgender women(MSM/TGW)in Bangalore,mainly collected from‘hot-spot’locations that attract MSM/TGW,to illustrate a technique to deal with potential issues with the representativeness of this sample.A deterministic dynamic model of HIV transmission was developed,incorporating three subgroups of MSM/TGW,grouped according to their reported predominant sexual role(insertive,receptive or versatile).Using mathematical modelling and data triangulation for‘balancing’numbers of partners and role preferences,we compared three different approaches to determine if our technique could be useful for inferring characteristics of a more‘hidden’insertive MSM subpopulation,and explored their potential importance for the HIV *** for 2009 across all three approaches suggest that HIV prevalence among insertive MSM was likely to be less than half that recorded in the surveys(4.5e6.5%versus 13.1%),but that the relative size of this subgroup was over four times larger(61e69%of all MSM/TGW versus 15%).We infer that the insertive MSM accounted for 10e20%of all prevalent HIV infections among urban males aged *** modelling can be used with data on‘visible’MSM/TGW to provide insights into the characteristics of‘hidden’MSM.A greater understanding of the sexual behaviour of all MSM/TGW is important for effective HIV *** broadly,a hidden subgroup with a lower infectious disease prevalence than more visible subgroups,has the potential to contain more infections,if the hidden subgroup is considerably larger in size.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on large events has been *** this work,an evaluation of the potential impact of international arrivals due to Expo 2020 in terms of potential COVID-19 infections from October 1st,2021,until the end of April 2022 in the United Arab Emirates is *** simulation results indicate that:(i)the vaccination status of the visitors appears to have a small impact on cases,this is expected as the small numbers of temporary visitors with respect to the total population contribute little to the herd immunity status;and(ii)the number of infected arrivals is the major factor of impact potentially causing a surge in cases countrywide with the subsequent hospitalisations and *** results indicate that the prevention of infected arrivals should take all precedence priority to mitigate the impact of international visitors with their vaccination status being of less relevance.

An assessment of the potential impact of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 in Aotearoa New Zealand

New Zealand delayed the introduction of the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 into the community by the continued use of strict border controls through to January *** allowed time for vaccination rates to increase and the roll out of third doses of the vaccine(boosters)to *** also meant more data on the characteristics of Omicron became available prior to the first cases of community *** we present a mathematical model of an Omicron epidemic,incorporating the effects of the booster roll out and waning of vaccine-induced immunity,and based on estimates of vaccine effectiveness and disease severity from international *** model considers differing levels of immunity against infection,severe illness and death,and ignores waning of infection-induced *** model was used to provide an assessment of the potential impact of an Omicron wave in the New Zealand population,which helped inform government preparedness and *** the time the modelling was carried out,the date of introduction of Omicron into the New Zealand community was *** therefore simulated outbreaks with different start dates,as well as investigating different levels of booster *** found that an outbreak starting on 1 February or 1 March led to a lower health burden than an outbreak starting on 1 January because of increased booster coverage,particularly in older age *** also found that outbreaks starting later in the year led to worse health outcomes than an outbreak starting on 1 *** is because waning immunity in older groups started to outweigh the increased protection from higher booster coverage in younger *** an outbreak starting on 1 February and with high booster uptake,the number of occupied hospital beds in the model peaked between 800 and 3,300 depending on assumed transmission *** conclude that combining an accelerated booster programme with public health measures to flatten the curve are key to avoid overwhelming the hea
