Chemical analysis of forensic evidence collected from a crime scene is important for criminal *** uniqueness and specificity of chemical information obtained from the forensic sample is critical for successful *** mass spectrometry(IMS)is a powerful analytical technique which allows direct chemical analysis of forensic samples without extensive sample *** high sensitivity and specificity,the chemical identity and the spatial distributions of analytes in the sample will be ***,nanomaterials have been used in Surface-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization(SALDI)-based MS and IMS as substrate for forensic sample *** have applied Gold Nanoparticles(AuNPs)as efficient LDI substrate in previous *** samples including latent fingerprint and questioned documents were firstly coated with a layer of AuNPs using solvent-free Argon Ion Sputtering,followed by the subsequent spectrometric *** imaging of latent fingerprint can be *** latent fingerprint can be optically visualized due to the plasmonic properties of ***-and endogenous compounds found on latent fingerprint can also be molecularly imaged by *** document such as cheque with suspicious altered writing can be examined through the minimally-destructive ink analysis by *** using different pens can be distinguished by the MS images targeting different characteristic ions with specific m/z ***,altered words can be identified on the questioned *** team is developing other noble metal nanoparticles,such as silver nanoparticles(AgNPs),platinum nanoparticles(PtNPs),palladium nanoparticles(PdNPs)and bimetallic nanoparticles with welldefined physiochemical properties as potential efficient substrates for SALDI-MS and-IMS *** anticipate that the use of nanoparticles as substrate will enhance the analytical performance and extend the application in forensic science.

imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) methodology for biological tissue component distribution map using MALDI-TOF MS and MALDI-TOF/TOF MS was *** density distribution was probed to be quite useful for MS image *** than 40 000 spectra from 200 tissue sections were acquired and reproducibility between various of species groups was great than 80%.Tens of differentiately expressed components were detected by t-test (P<0.01).Classification modeling was created based on the differentiate components,blind species were analyzed for model validation,accuracy was above 90%.

Current status of hair analysis in forensic toxicology in China

Hair analysis has been mainly used to document drug use history in abusers,drug-facilitated crime cases,doping control analysis and postmortem toxicology in the fields of forensic toxicology,clinical toxicology,and doping *** analysis has also gained more attention in the last 30 years in *** technology has been promoted as more research has appeared concerning hair analysis,and consensus has been sought among forensic toxicologists regarding aspects such as hair decontamination treatment,detection of abused substances in hair,segmental hair analysis and interpretation of analytical ***,there are still some limitations in the estimation of drug intake time and frequency by segmental hair analysis due to the different growth cycles evident within a bundle of hairs,the drug incorporation mechanism and sampling *** and imaging mass spectrometry(iMS)technology based on a single hair may be a good choice to estimate drug intake time more *** of hair root samples may also be used to document acute poisoning in postmortem toxicology,and the analysis of the hair shaft can document long-term use of drugs depending on the length of the hair being evaluated.

Differentialiy expressed polypeptides in the brain of a BALB/c mouse model infected with scrapie strain 22L were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The results showed that 21 peptides were down-regulated, with peptides of mass-to-charge ratio 758.772 5 and mass-to-charge ratio 5 432.206 9, demonstrating the most significant decreases. These finding suggest that these peptides are candidate biomarkers and may play an important role in the pathogenesis of prion disease.
