Is hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBO2T)useful to counteract severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)in positive asymptomatic patients?Asymptomatic persons seem to account for approximately 45%of SARS-CoV-2 infections,and they can transmit the virus to others for an extended period,perhaps longer than *** patients dying from SARS-CoV-2 infection,the mean number of concomitant diseases was 3.6(median 3,standard deviation 2.1).Many of these diseases are correlated with the nitric oxide synthase genetic polymorphism and reduced nitric oxide synthesis[risk for coronary heart disease:odds ratio(95%confidence interval)=2.74(1.78-3.85)].HBO2T significantly increases the production of nitric oxide and free radicals which,in laboratory tests,inhibit the replication of the ***2T upregulates hypoxia inducible factor,which promotes the expression of human antiviral peptides:defensins and cathelicidins,both effective to block the ***,HBO2T regulates the inflammatory *** share our pilot study conclusions as a basis for clinical trials.

Objective: To study the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment of severe brain injury. Methods: Fifty-five patients were divided into a treatment group (n=35 receiving HBO therapy) and a control group (n=20 receiving dehydrating, cortical steroid and antibiotic therapy) to observe the alteration of clinic GCS (Glasgow Coma Scale), brain electric activity mapping (BEAM), prognosis and GOS (Glasgow Outcome Scale) before and after hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Results: In the treatment group GCS,BEAM and GOS were improved obviously after 3 courses of treatment, GCS increased from 5.1 to 14.6 (Phyperbaric oxygen treatment could improve obviously GCS, BEAM and GOS of severe brain injury patients, and effectively reduce the mortality and morbidity. It is an effective method to treat severe brain injury.

Objective:To review the role of adjuvant hyperbaric oxygen therapy(HBOT)in the treatment of malignant otitis externa(MOE).Data sources:PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science,Science Direct,and Cochrane Library were searched for the following concepts:“hyperbaric oxygen”and“malignant or necrotizing otitis externa.”Methods:Studies were included if they contained(1)patients with reported evidence of MOE,(2)employment of adjuvant HBOT,(3)details on patients’medical condition,and(4)documented survival *** information included patient demographics,underlying medical conditions,infectious etiology,signs and symptoms,medical and surgical treatments,duration of medical treatment,mean follow up time,HBOT setting,number of HBOT sessions,complications,survival rate,and all-cause ***:A total of 16 studies comprising 58 patients(mean age 68.0 years)were *** was present in 94.7%of cases and Pseudomonas spp(64.3%)was the most common infectious *** nerve VII was involved in 55.2%of ***,the disease cure rate with adjuvant HBOT was 91.4%and all-cause mortality was 8.6%.Among those who had cranial nerve VII involvement,72.0%had return of function and 93.8%of them ***:HBOT may be an effective treatment option for refractory or advanced MOE but its efficacy remains unproven due to lack of strong scientific ***,its therapeutic value should not be underestimated given good results and few adverse events reported in this study.

We treated detonator-explosion-induced craniocerebral injury in rabbits with hyperbaric oxygen 1 24 hours post-injury. Expression of the apoptosis-regulating protein cytochrome c, the pro-apoptotic protein Bax and the apoptosis marker caspase-3 in the tissues surrounding the area of injury was significantly reduced, while that of the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 was significantly increased. Our findings indicate that the curative effects of early hyperbaric oxygen on cortical cell apoptosis is associated with suppression of cytochrome c release from mitochondria. This mechanism underlies the observed reduction in Bax expression and upregulation of Bcl-2 expression.

It has been reported that early intervention of hyperbaric oxygen （HBO） can promote the intellectual rehabilitation of infants with severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy （HIE） and can prevent mental retardation recently. However, the prior observations on the therapeutic effect almost were short-term. How about the observations on prospective efficacy and the following up on systematic intelligence test？ OBJECTIVE： To investigate the short-term and long-term effects of HBO therapy on the promotion of the intellectual rehabilitation in infants with severe HIE. DESIGN： A comparative observation. SETTING： Department of Pediatrics, Affiliated Hospital, Qingdao University Medical College. PARTICIPANTS： Forty-seven infants with severe HIE （35 males and 12 females） were treated with HBO in the Department of Pediatrics, the Affiliated Hospital of the Medical College of Qingdao University from October 1996 to July 1999. All of them were consistent with the diagnostic criteria and clinical grading on severe HIE which were designed by Chinese Medical Association pediatrics committee neonate group in Hangzhou, October, 1996. Informed contents were obtained from the relatives of all the infants. METHODS： ① Grouping： The infants were randomly divided into two groups according to the order of admission, those of odd numbers were HBO group （n =24） and those of even numbers were control group （n =23）. All the infants were treated with routine therapy for 3 months, in addition to HBO therapy in the HBO group, once a day for 4 courses of l0 days with the interval of l0 - 15 days since 8 to l0 days after birth. Background： Numerous studies have confirmed that hyperbaric oxygen （HBO） in combination with radiotherapy or chemotherapy may increase the efficacy of radiotherapy or chemotherapy in patients with glioma. However, whether HBO therapy alone may inhibit or promote the growth of malignant tumors remains controversial. This study aimed to investigate the effect of HBO on the growth of glioma in rats, and the impact of HBO on the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF） and hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha （HIF-1α）, angiogenesis, and apoptosis of glioma cells. Methods： Male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with or without HBO after glioma cell inoculation and followed for up to 16 days postinoculation. Rats were randomized to receive bilateral forelimb function tests （n = 20 per group） and head magnetic resonance imaging （n = 5 per group）. Differences between HBO and control groups were tested using 2-sample independent t-tests and changes over time within treatment groups were analyzed using a repeated measurement analysis of variance with Bonferroni correction. The effect of H BO on the expression of VEGF, HIF-1α, yon Willebrand factor, angiogenesis, and tumor cell apoptosis were also examined （n = 5 per group）. Results： Forelimb function scores were reduced in both HBO-treated and control groups. HBO-treated rats had significantly larger tumor volume and more water in the cerebellum compared with control rats. The intratumoral expression of VEGF was significantly higher in HBO-treated rats compared with control rats （23.2% vs. 13.3%, P = 0.002）. HIF-1α was significantly increased in HBO-treated rats compared with controls in the expression of both intratumoral （72.7% vs. 54.9%, P= 0.001） and peritumoral （2.6% vs. 1.9%, P = 0.003） cells. The intratumoral microvessel density （MVD） was significantly higher in the HBO group （15.6 vessels/field vs. 4.4 vessels/field. P 〈 0.001 ）, and the peritumoral MVD was not significantly different between the two groups

In the present study, rabbits were treated with hyperbaric oxygen for 1 hour after detonator-blastinduced craniocerebral injury. Immunohistochemistry showed significantly reduced aquaporin 4 expression and adrenocorticotropic hormone expression in the pituitary gland of rabbits with craniocerebral injury. Aquaporin 4 expression was positively correlated with adrenocorticotropic hormone expression. These findings indicate that early hyperbaric oxygen therapy may suppress adrenocorticotropic hormone secretion by inhibiting aquaporin 4 expression.

BACKGROUND： There is a growing research focus on the combination of blood oxygenation level dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging （BOLD-fMRI） and diffusion tensor imaging （DTI） to evaluate visual cortical function and structural changes in the cerebrum, as well as morphological changes to the white matter fiber tracks, after visual pathway lesions. However, the combined application of BOLD-fMRI and DTI in treating of visual pathway abnormalities still requires further studies. OBJECTIVE： To observe and evaluate the effects of hyperbaric oxygen on visual pathway abnormalities, and to evaluate the characteristics of cerebral function and anatomic structural changes by using BOLD-fMRI combined with DTI technique. DESIGN： Case contrast observation. SETTING： Fuzhou General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command of Chinese PLA. PARTICIPANTS： Sixteen patients （9 males and 7 females, 15-77 years old） with lateral or bilateral visual disorder induced by visual pathway lesions were selected from the Department of Neurology, Fuzhou General Hospital of Nanjing Military Area Command of Chinese PLA from January 2006 to May 2007. These patients comprised the lesion group. Measures of interventional therapy： hyperbaric oxygen of two normal atmospheres for three courses （10 d/course） and routine internal medicine treatment. In addition, 12 healthy subjects of similar sex and age to the lesion group were regarded as the control group. The control group underwent routine ophthalmological and ocular fundus examinations; diagnostic results were normal. The experiment received confirmed consent from the local ethic committee, and all patients provided informed consent. METHODS： BOLD-fMRI and DTI manifestations in the lesion group were observed before and after hyperbaric oxygen intervention, and the results were compared with the control group. Background hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning （HBO） is a new method of ischemia preconditioning. In this study, we examined its effects on skin flap survival and the mechanisms involved. Methods Thirty-six rats were divided into three groups： HBO preconditioning, control, and sham groups. An extended epigastric adipocutaneous flap based on the right superficial epigastric artery and vein was raised. A 3-hour period of flap ischemia was induced by clamping the pedicle vessels with a microvascular clamp. At the end of ischemia induction, the clamp was removed and the flap was resutured. Rats in the HBO preconditioning group were treated with HBO four times before surgery. Microcirculation in the skin flap was measured on postoperative days 1, 3 and 5. The size of the flap was measured on postoperative day 5, before the animals were sacrificed. Samples of the skin flap were prepared and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The levels of tumor necrosis factor （TNF）-α, interleukin （IL）-1β, and IL-6 in the flap samples were measured.
