Low Ca diet leads to increased Ca retention by changing the gut flora and ileal pH value in laying hens

Osteoporosis is a common degenerative metabolic bone disease in caged laying hens.Intensive egg production mobilizing large amounts of Ca from bone for eggshell formation,consequently leading to Ca deficiency,has been recognized as a critical factor causing osteoporosis in commercial laying hens.The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Ca deficiency on the function of the gut microbiotaebone axis and related egg production traits and bone health in laying hens.Twenty-four 48-week-old laying hens were fed a control diet(Control,3.72%)or a low Ca diet(LC,2.04%)for 60 d(n=12).Compared to the Control hens,the LC hens had higher levels of alkaline phosphatase and tartrate resistant acid phosphatase(Phens had higher plasma estradiol concentrations,while having lower concentrations of interleukin-1(IL-1)and IL-6.The LC hens also had a lower pH value in the ileum with an increased Ca retention.The principal co-ordinates analysis showed significantly separate cecal microbiota populations between the Control and LC hens.The Prevotellaceae_UCG-001,Subdoligranulum,Peptococcus,and Eubacterium_hallii_group(Phens.In addition,Prevotellaceae_UCG-001,Subdoligranulum and Eubacter-ium_hallii_group had a negative correlation,while Sutterella was positively correlated with ileal pH values.The transcriptome analysis revealed that the low Ca diet caused 20 and 31 genes to be signifi-cantly up-and down-regulated,respectively.The gene expressions of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator,solute carrier family 26 member 3 of the anion exchangers,and mitogen-activated protein kinase 12 of pro-inflammatory factors were lower in the LC birds,which was corre-lated with the lower ileal pH values.These results suggest that the hens with low Ca diet-induced osteoporosis have an increased intestinal Ca retention with a decreased i

Influence of Varying Crude Protein Levels and Balanced Amino Acids on the Performance and Haematological Characteristics of Laying hens at the Second Phase of Production

Varying levels of dietary crude proteins and balanced amino acids were fed to layers for a period of eight weeks starting from the twenty-sixth week of age of birds and six weeks into egg production. Effects on performance and haematological characteristics were investigated at this second phase of production. Sixty Black Nera hens were randomly allotted into four (4) dietary treatments, containing the following levels of crude protein 14%, 15%, 16%, 17% and the metabolizable energy was iso-caloric for each treatment. The results showed that there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) observed for lymphocyte, Haemoglobin (Hb), Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Red Blood Cell (RBC) and White Blood Cell (WBC), these haematological parameters were within the range for healthy birds. Thus crude protein level of 14% can be used in diets of layers at the second phase of production provided that adequate amino acids are given, without adverse effect on egg laying, feed intake and measured blood parameters.

The Adjectival Intensifier hen in Mandarin Chinese

Huang (2006) argues that h?n ‘very’, the Mandarin adjective intensifier, is anobligatory type-lifter that transforms simple adjectives to complex adjectives for predicatehood,as is required by the Property Theory (Chierchia, 1984, 1985). This article studies theother cases where h?n is not obligatory and concludes that, in addition to h?n-insertion,affixation, and reduplication identified by Huang (2006), the negator bù and VP or IPmovement can also function as type-lifters for simple adjectives. I further argue that onlyone type-lifter device is allowed per sentence.

Effect of Betaine on the Regulation of the Lipid Metabolism in Laying hen

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of betaine on lipid metabolism of laying hens. 1 600 ISA brown laying hens of 20 weeks of age were alloted randomly into 4 groups each with 4 replicates of 100 layers, the layers were given a corn-soybean basal diet with 0,400,600 and 800 mg/kg betaine re-spectirely. Results indicated that supplementation of 600 mg/kg betaine significantly improved lay performance, and increased egg production 8.67% (P<0.04), decreased feed/egg ratio by 9.02%(P<0.03) compared with control, but there were no significant differences in egg weight and feed intake. It was found that supplementation of 600 mg/kg betaine decreased weights of abdominal fat by 19.63%(P<0.02)and 22.35% (P<0.02), and decreased liver fat by 8.52%(P<0.05) and 16.28%(P<0.01) in 50 and 70 weeks of age respectively. Compared with control, in 70 weeks of age, activity of LPL in abdominal fat was decreased by 44.83% (P<0.01), HSL activity in abdominal fat increased by 50.0% (P<0.02), and MDH activity in liver was decreased by 28.74 % (P < 0.03). Supplementation of 600 betaine increased levels of T3 by 43.29 % (P < 0.05) and 43.95 % (P < 0.02) in 50 and 70 weeks of age respectively, and increased the concentration of cAMP in hypothalamus and anterior pituitary by 59.89% (P<0.01) and 24.03% (P<0.05) respectively in 70 weeks of age. The concentration of serum gluclose (GLU) , FFA and phospholipid were increased by 44.50% (P<0.03), 19.66%(P<0.03) and 71.66% (P<0.01) in 50 weeks of age. The concentration of serum gluclose (GLU), FFA and phospholipid were increased by 16.25%(P<0.05),22.51%(P<0.02) and 22.42%(P<0.01) in 70 weeks of age.

Impact of feeding flaxseed and microalgal residue on omega-3 fatty acids enrichment in hen eggs

To investigate the impact of dietary supplementation of different omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) resources on PUFAs enrichment in hen eggs, two supplemental materials, flaxseed and oil-extracted microalgal residue of heterotrophic Schizochytrium, were added to the diet of laying hens in 3 groups. Results showed that supplementation with flaxseed and Schizochytrium residue gave rise to the increased, but different n-3 PUFAs levels in egg yolk, mainly α-linolenic acid (ALA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The ratio of n-6/n-3 PUFAs was reduced in all groups. After 14 days feeding of supplied PUFAs resources, n-3 PUFAs contents reached a plateau, and then remained constant during further supplementation in 3 experimental groups. Both the highest ALA level and DHA level were achieved in flaxseed group and microalgae group, reaching up to 353.69 (±68.15) mg/egg and 301.41 (± 26.76) mg/egg respectively. Moreover, the n-3 PUFAs enrichment efficiency was relatively low in flaxseed group when compared to other 2 groups. Laying rates of hens before entering peak production period could be improved by adding flaxseed but was not obviously affected by Schizochytrium residue. The egg weight, on the other hand, had no relationship with dietary supplementation. Thus, supplementation of flaxseed or Schizochytrium residue into standard feed offers an alternative choice for the production of n-3 PUFAs enriched eggs.
