Automatic Evaluation of Test Strips for Anti-Ganglioside Antibodies in Patients with guillain-barréSyndrome Using EUROLineScan Software

Campylobacter jejuni infection has been implicated in the pathogenesis of guillain-barré syndrome (GBS) due to production of humoral immune response against neural antigens. A case-control study was performed in a tertiary care teaching hospital for the estimation of anti-ganglioside antibodies in GBS patients and their controls. Blood samples were collected from 59 GBS cases, 58 neurological controls (NC) and 60 non-neurological control (NNC) patients for automatic estimation of IgG and IgM antibodies to seven gangliosides using EUROLineScan software. Antibodies of IgG class for GM1 were highly significant in GBS (p = 0.000) and NC (p = 0.031) compared to NNC. However GBS group was not significant (p = 0.413) compared to NC. For GM2 ganglioside, GBS and NC groups were significant (p = 0.000) compared to NNC, but GBS group was not significant (p = 0.999) compared to NC. For GM3 ganglioside, GBS and NC groups were significant (p = 0.000) compared to NNC;but GBS group was insignificant (p = 0.858) compared to NC with similar trend for all other ganglioside antibodies. When IgM class of antibodies was evaluated for GM1, GBS group was not significant (p = 0.604) whereas NC group was significant (p = 0.000) compared to NNC. GBS group was not significant compared to NC (p = 0.011). The trend was the same for GM2 antibodies. For GM3, GBS group was significant (p = 0.010) and NC was near significant (p = 0.055) compared to NNC. However GBS group was not significant (p = 0.808) compared to NC. No groups were significant (p > 0.05) in relation to the remaining gangliosides except for GQ1b where GBS group (p = 0.001) and NC group were significant (p = 0.000) compared to NNC. GBS group was also significant (p = 0.001) compared to NC and NNC. Anti-gangliosides antibodies were present in highly significant levels in the GBS group, though they were also present in the non-paralytic neurological control patients compared to the non-neurological control group.

guillain-barré syndrome (GBS) is an uncommon disease involving widespread peripheral nerve inflammatory demyelination which results in ascending symmetrical limb paralysis and areflexia. Approximately 2/3 of cases occurred following a simple, trivial antecedent infection. In northern China, diarrhea caused by Campylobacter jejuni is the most common etiology of GBS. This article presents 2 cases - post cerebral hemorrhage and post head traumatic GBS. Both patients suffered from acute motor axonal neuropathy, a main subtype of GBS, 14 days after cerebral hemorrhage or head trauma without any antecedent infection. The possible pathophysiological mechanisms are discussed in the article, and the importance of increasing the awareness of early diagnosis, as well as early treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin and supportive care, in this special pathogenic GBS is emphasized.

Zika virus(ZIKV) was discovered more than half a century ago,recently it has gained unprecedented attention by the global health *** 2007,only 14 cases of human ZIKV infections were reported around the globe,while during the current outbreak,estimated cases mounted to approximately 1.5 million in Brazil alone,the virus was disseminated to wider South-American territories and travel-associated ZIKV infections were reported in USA,Europe and recently in *** infections remain asymptomatic in approximately 80% of the individuals,and no anti-viral treatments were ***,neurological complications associated with the infections,such as infant microcephaly and guillain-barré syndrome are major cause of the ***,based on small numbers of cases,existing evidence strongly supports an exclusive link of viral infection and observed neurological ***,much work remains to assign exact numbers of complications caused by *** its structural attributes ZIKV shows remarkable resemblance with dengue virus and West-Nile ***,genomes of different ZIKV strains have already been decoded;role of the viral components in infection process and particularly pathogenesis of the disease remain widely *** vulnerable areas,most viable strategy to ensure public health safety is vector control and enhanced public awareness about the transmission of the disease.

Surgery has been reported a rare cause of guillain-barré syndrome (GBS), but a recent retrospective study reported a much higher incidence rate for post-surgical patients. There are several case reports of GBS presenting after cardiac surgical procedures. All these cases were diagnosed as acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP). We described a case of acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) after cardiac surgery. Clinical features were reviewed along with spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Sequential electrodiagnostic studies (EDx) were performed. This case represented a rare complication of AMAN with urinary retention after cardiac surgery.
