Toward tuberculosis elimination by understanding epidemiologic characteristics and risk factors in Hainan Province, China

Background The disease burden of tuberculosis(TB)was heavy in Hainan Province,China,and the information on transmission patterns was limited with few studies.This atudy aims to further explore the epidemiological charac-teristics and influencing factors of TB in Hainan Province,and thereby contribute valuable scientific evidences for TB elimination in Hainan Province.Methods The TB notification data in Hainan Province from 2013 to 2022 were collected from the Chinese National Disease Control Information System Tuberculosis Surveillance System,along with socio-economic data.The spatial-temporal and population distributions were analyzed,and spatial autocorrelation analysis was conducted to explore TB notification rate clustering.In addition,the epidemiological characteristics of the cases among in-country migrants were described,and the delay pattern in seeking medical care was investigated.Finally,a geographically and tem-porally weighted regression(GTWR)model was adopted to analyze the relationship between TB notification rate and socio-economic indicators.The tailored control suggestions in different regions for TB elimination was provided by understanding epidemiological characteristics and risk factors obtained by GTWR.Results From 2013 to 2022,64,042 cases of TB were notified in Hainan Province.The estimated annual percent-age change of TB notification rate in Hainan Province from 2013 to 2020 was-6.88%[95%confidence interval(CI):-5.30%,-3.69%],with higher rates in central and southern regions.The majority of patients were males(76.33%)and farmers(67.80%).Cases among in-country migrants primarily originated from Sichuan(369 cases),Heilongjiang(267 cases),Hunan(236 cases),Guangdong(174 cases),and Guangxi(139 cases),accounting for 53%.The majority(98.83%)of TB cases were notified through passive case finding approaches,with delay in seeking care.The GTWR analysis showed that gross domestic product per capita,the number of medical institutions and health personnel per 10,oo0 people were main factors affecting t

The recent 78th United Nations General Assembly(UNGA)declaration relaunched a new health priority and political commitment in accelerating Universal Health Coverage(UHC),adopted by the United Nations(UN)in 2015 and are intended to be met by 2030.At mid-way point of UHC implementation,we advocate for the much needed program-matic implementation research,evidence-based interventions(EBls)policies and strategies leadership and manage-ment capacity building to enable robust,resilient and sustainable multi-sectoral partnerships,integrated coordination and governance mechanisms capabilities in accelerating UHC package mainly infectious diseases of poverty elimina-tion and eradication agenda.

Effective elimination of Hazardous Chromium (VI) Using Periodic Elements and Contemporary Adsorption Methods by Using Magnesium Ferrite Nanoparticle: A Review

A well-known hazardous metal and top contaminant in wastewater is hexavalent chromium. The two forms of most commonly found chromium are chromate ( CrO 4 2− ) and dichromate ( Cr 2 O 7 2− ). Leather tanning, cooling tower blow-down, plating, electroplating, rinse water sources, anodizing baths etc. are the main sources of Cr (VI) contamination. The Cr (VI) is not only non-biodegradable in the environment but also carcinogenic to living population. It is still difficult to treat Cr contaminated waste water effectively, safely, eco-friendly, and economically. As a result, many techniques have been used to treat Cr (VI)-polluted wastewater, including adsorption, chemical precipitation, coagulation, ion-exchange, and filtration. Among these practices, the most practical method is adsorption for the removal of Cr (VI) from aqueous solutions, which has gained widespread acceptance due to the ease of use and affordability of the equipment and adsorbent. It has been revealed that Fe-based adsorbents’ oxides and hydroxides have high adsorptive potential to lower Cr (VI) content below the advised threshold. Fe-based adsorbents were also discovered to be relatively cheap and toxic-free in Cr (VI) treatment. Fe-based adsorbents are commonly utilized in industry. It has been discovered that nanoparticles of Fe-, Ti-, and Cu-based adsorbents have a better capacity to remove Cr (VI). Cr (VI) was effectively removed from contaminated water using mixed element-based adsorbents (Fe-Mn, Fe-Ti, Fe-Cu, Fe-Zr, Fe-Cu-Y, Fe-Mg, etc.). Initial findings suggest that Cr (VI) removal from wastewater may be accomplished by using magnesium ferrite nanomaterials as an efficient adsorbent.

Malaria elimination in China and Sustainability Concerns in the Post-elimination Stage

The World Health Organization(WHO)certified China as officially malaria-free on June 30,2021.Looking back at the public health history in China,malaria elimination has been a product of complex social engineering.Here,we summarized our experience and lessons,and found that malaria control and elimination in China is mainly attributed to governmental leadership,consistent efforts,technological innovations,and adaptive approaches.We also raised that vigilance should focus on imported cases through strengthening surveillance and response systems in order to prevent any re-establishment of transmission after elimination.China should continue to maintain its laboratory,clinical and field epidemiology capabilities.Continuous policy and financial support,multi-sectoral cooperation,and innovative strategies and approaches will remain essential.By integrating these,a malaria-free status can become sustainable.

Background Rabies continues to be a serious threat to global public health endangering people’s health and public health safety.In the People’s Republic of China,multi-sectoral and comprehensive prevention and control strategies have aimed to extensively curb human rabies transmission.Here,we examine the current state of rabies infection in China,explore strategic interventions put in place in response to WHO’s ambition of“Zero rabies deaths by 2030”and critically assess the constraints and feasibility of dog-mediated rabies elimination in China.Methods This study analyzed and evaluated the process towards dog-mediated rabies elimination in China from five perspectives:namely,human,dog,policy,challenge,and prospects.Evidence-based data on progress of dog-mediated rabies elimination in China was derived from a number of sources;a literature search was undertaken using PubMed,Web of Science and CNKI databases,distribution data for human rabies cases as derived from the Data-center of the China Public Health Science and policy and document data were obtained from official websites of the relevant China ministries and commissions.Results The incidence of human rabies cases in China have shown a downward trend year-on-year since 2007.Implementation of a government-led,multi-sectoral“One Health”approach to combating rabies has driven down the total number of rabies deaths nationwide to around 200 in 2020.The number of provincial-level administrative divisions(PLADs)reporting human cases of rabies has also decreased to 21 in 2020,13 of which reported less than 10 cases.Furthermore,the number of outpatient visits seeking rabies post-exposure prophylaxis has risen dramatically over the past two decades,with demand being 15 times higher than it was initially.There remain however,significant gaps in rabies elimination outcomes across the different regions of China.To date the target of achieving a canine rabies vaccination rate of>75%has not been met.The challenges of rabies immunization of dogs and dog management in underd

Achievements of the national malaria control and elimination program in the People’s Republic of China:the Atlas of Malaria Transmission in China

In 2017,China achieved the target of zero indigenous malaria case for the first time,and has been certified as malaria free by World Health Organization in 2021.To further summarize the historical achievements and technical experiences of the elimination program,a project on the Roadmap Analysis and Verification for Malaria elimination in China was carried out.Results of the project were compiled and published as the Atlas of Malaria Transmission in China(The Atlas).The Atlas using modern digital information technologies,has been supported by various data from 24 malaria endemic provinces of China since 1950,to assess the changes in malaria epidemic patterns from 1950 to 2019 at national and provincial levels.The Atlas is designed as two volumes,including a total of 1850 thematic maps and more than 130 charts,consisting of introductory maps,thematic maps of malaria epidemic and control at national and provincial levels.It objectively and directly shows the epidemic history,evolution process,and great achievements of the national malaria control and elimination program in China.The Atlas has important reference value for summing up historical experience in the national malaria elimination program of China,and malaria control and elimination in other endemic countries in the world.

Lymphatic filariasis(LF),an asymptomatic,acute,and chronic condition in human beings,is the second most common vector-borne disease after malaria.According to the World Health Organization,there are 120 million LF cases detected in 81 tropical and subtropical countries,and one billion people are at risk.Therefore,the Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis was launched in 2000,with the primary objective of stopping LF transmission among all at-risk groups using mass drug administration(MDA),managing morbidities,and preventing LF-related impairments using a minimum treatment package.Additionally,other programs such as epidemiological assessment including National Filaria Control Program and World Health Organization recommended routine and pre-MDA microfilaremia surveys also implemented to stop the LF transmission.The routine filaria surveys were also carried out in around 2000-4000 individuals/month throughout the year whereas pre-MDA surveys were also conducted every year in approximately 4000 individuals in four fixed and four random sites.Furthermore,the Transmission Assessment Survey was also conducted to check the risk of LF among primary school children.Moreover,potential diagnostic methods,systematic surveillance regimes,the Direct Network Report system,and regular trainings and awareness may be also effective in preventing the recurrence of LF.Hence,this review emphasizes the potential advocacy tools and various strategies as well as procedures for monitoring,which could be impactful in eliminating LF.

An improved method for internal multiple elimination using the theory of virtual events

Compared with first-order surface-related multiples from marine data,the onshore internal multiples are weaker and are always combined with a hazy and occasionally strong interference pattern.It is usually difficult to discriminate these events from complex targets and highly scattering overburdens,especially when the primary energy from deep layers is weaker than that from shallow layers.The internal multiple elimination is even more challenging due to the fact that the velocity and energy difference between primary reflections and internal multiples is tiny.In this study,we propose an improved method which formulates the elimination of the internal multiples as an optimization problem and develops a convolution factor T.The generated internal multiples at all interfaces are obtained using the convolution factor T through iterative inversion of the initial multiple model.The predicted internal multiples are removed from seismic data through subtraction.Finally,several synthetic experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our approach.The results of our study indicate that compared with the traditional virtual events method,the improved method simplifies the multiple prediction process in which internal multiples generated from each interface are built through iterative inversion,thus reducing the calculation cost,improving the accuracy,and enhancing the adaptability of field data.

Circulating tumor cells(CTCs)are recognized as the main source of tumor recurrence and metastasis.Eliminating the CTCs in peripheral blood provides a new strategy to reduce the probability of recurrence or metastasis.Here,we proposed a concept to eliminate CTCs by inserting a needle in the superficial blood vessel.Using the property of ZnO and the structure of nanoflowers,we designed a medical needle coated with ZnO nanoflowers(ZNFs),which killed about 90%of captured CTCs in vitro and prevented the injecting CTCs from spreading to lung tissue in BABL/c mouse model.Results in vitro and in vivo demonstrated that the CTCs not only were captured and killed,but also detached from the needle surface after dead,enabling the ZNFs needle continually eliminate CTCs.Furthermore,a theoretical model was presented to explain the penetration mechanism of cells by nanostructures,which indicated that nanoflowers structure can puncture CTCs more easily than vertical nanowire structure.The concept of inserting an intravascular needle provides a potential strategy to lower the concentration of CTCs in blood and reduce the probability of tumor recurrence or metastasis.

Background:Following initiation of China’s National Malaria elimination Action Plan(NMEAP)in 2010,the'1-3-7’approach was developed and rolled out in China to facilitate the malaria elimination programme and accelerate malaria elimination.This study aims to summarize and condense these experiences through a retrospective analysis in Jiangsu Province,which could be adapted and applied in other malaria elimination settings worldwide.Methods:A retrospective analysis of imported malaria cases into China identified through an improved surveillance and response system in Jiangsu Province was carried out for the period of 2001-2020.To improve the malaria surveillance and response system,Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention from the prefectures and counties in Jiangsu province conducted population-level health education to improve healthcare seeking behavior,strengthened capacity of health facilities to improve performance of malaria diagnosis and treatment,and raised the capacity of public health providers to improve implementation of the'1-3-7’approach.Categorical variables were carried out by Chi square tests with Fisher’s exact correction.Results:From 2001 to 2020,a total of 9,879 malaria cases were reported in Jiangsu Province.Since 2012,no indigenous malaria cases have been reported in Jiangsu Province.However,in recent years,there has been a substantial increase of imported falciparum malaria cases.Between 2012 and 2020,an estimated 61.57 million individuals have benefited from population-level health education in Jiangsu Province.For healthcare-seeking services among the 2,423 imported malaria cases,687(28.4%)and 1,104(45.6%)cases visited hospitals on the first day and the second day from symptom onset,respectively.A total of 1,502(61.9%)cases were diagnosed on the first day at medical facilities.Jiangsu Province achieved 100%,99.4%and 98.3%completion rate in terms of case detection and notification(within one day),case investigation(within three days)and foci response and disposition(within seven days),res
