Background Rabies continues to be a serious threat to global public health endangering people’s health and public health safety.In the People’s Republic of China,multi-sectoral and comprehensive prevention and control strategies have aimed to extensively curb human rabies transmission.Here,we examine the current state of rabies infection in China,explore strategic interventions put in place in response to WHO’s ambition of“Zero rabies deaths by 2030”and critically assess the constraints and feasibility of Dog-mediated rabies elimination in China.Methods This study analyzed and evaluated the process towards Dog-mediated rabies elimination in China from five perspectives:namely,human,Dog,policy,challenge,and prospects.Evidence-based data on progress of Dog-mediated rabies elimination in China was derived from a number of sources;a literature search was undertaken using PubMed,Web of Science and CNKI databases,distribution data for human rabies cases as derived from the Data-center of the China Public Health Science and policy and document data were obtained from official websites of the relevant China ministries and commissions.Results The incidence of human rabies cases in China have shown a downward trend year-on-year since 2007.Implementation of a government-led,multi-sectoral“One Health”approach to combating rabies has driven down the total number of rabies deaths nationwide to around 200 in 2020.The number of provincial-level administrative divisions(PLADs)reporting human cases of rabies has also decreased to 21 in 2020,13 of which reported less than 10 cases.Furthermore,the number of outpatient visits seeking rabies post-exposure prophylaxis has risen dramatically over the past two decades,with demand being 15 times higher than it was initially.There remain however,significant gaps in rabies elimination outcomes across the different regions of China.To date the target of achieving a canine rabies vaccination rate of>75%has not been met.The challenges of rabies immunization of Dogs and Dog management in underd

Surgical management of facial Dog bite trauma:A contemporary perspective and review

Objective:To perform a review evaluating management of and complications stemming from Dog bite trauma sustained to the head and neck over the past decade.Data Sources:PubMed and Cochrane Library.Methods:The authors searched the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases for relevant published literature.A total of 12 peer-reviewed canine-exclusive series inclusive of 1384 patient cases describing facial Dog bite trauma met inclusion criteria.Wounds including fractures,lacerations,contusions,and other soft-tissue injuries were evaluated.Demographics related to clinical course and management,operating room requirements,and antibiotic usage were compiled and analyzed.Initial trauma and surgical management complications were also assessed.Results:75.5%of patients sustaining Dog bites required surgical intervention.Of these patients,7.8%suffered from postsurgical complications,including hypertrophic scarring(4.3%),postoperative infection(0.8%),or nerve deficits and persistent paresthesias(0.8%).Prophylactic antibiotics were administered to 44.3%of patients treated for facial Dog bites and the overall infection rate was 5.6%.Concomitant fracture was present in 1.0%of patients.Conclusion:Primary closure,often in the OR may be necessary,with few cases requiring grafts or flaps.Surgeons should be aware that the most common complication is hypertrophic scarring.Further research is needed to elucidate the role of prophylactic antibiotics.

The process of domestication has led to dramatic differences in behavioral traits between domestic Dogs and gray wolves. Whole-genome research found that a class of putative positively selected genes were related to various aspects of learning and memory, such as long-term potentiation and long-term depression. In this study, we constructed a single-nucleus transcriptomic atlas of the Dog hippocampus to illustrate its cell types, cell lineage and molecular features. Using the transcriptomes of 105 057 nuclei from the hippocampus of a Beagle Dog, we identified 26 cell clusters and a putative trajectory of oligodendrocyte development.Comparative analysis revealed a significant convergence between Dog differentially expressed genes(DEGs) and putative positively selected genes(PSGs). Forty putative PSGs were DEGs in glutamatergic neurons, especially in Cluster 14, which is related to the regulation of nervous system development. In summary, this study provides a blueprint to understand the cellular mechanism of Dog domestication.

Background The Ibizan Hound is a canine breed native to the Mediterranean region,where leishmaniasis is an endemic zoonosis.Several studies indicate a low prevalence of this disease in Ibizan Hound Dogs,whereas other canine breeds present a high prevalence.However,the underlying molecular mechanisms still remain unknown.The aim of this work is to analyse the relationship between serum levels of cytokines and the genomic profiles in two canine breeds,Ibizan Hound(resistant canine breed model)and Boxer(susceptible canine breed model).Methods In this study,we analyse the haplotypes of genes encoding cytokines related to immune response of Leishmania infantum infection in twenty-four Boxers and twenty-eight Ibizan Hounds apparently healthy using CanineHD DNA Analysis BeadChip including 165,480 mapped positions.The haplo.glm extension of haplo.score was used to perform a General Linear Model(GLM)regression to estimate the magnitude of individual haplotype effects within each cytokine.Results Mean levels of interferon gamma(IFN-γ),interleukin 2(IL-2)and IL-18 in Boxer Dogs were 0.19±0.05 ng/ml,46.70±4.54 ng/ml,and 36.37±30.59 pg/ml,whereas Ibizan Hound Dogs present 0.49±0.05 ng/ml,64.55±4.54 ng/ml,and 492.10±31.18 pg/ml,respectively.The GLM regression shows fifteen haplotypes with statistically significant effect on the cytokine serum levels(PDog breed,while susceptibility to the disease would be related to other specific haplotypes,with high frequency in Boxer.Future studies are needed to elucidate whether these differences and h

Background:Habitat loss and fragmentation in the Sierra Madre Oriental(SMO)ecological corridor have negative impacts on the movement and distribution of mammalian species that are of great ecological and evolutionary importance.Part of the SMO ecological corridor that is located in the state of Hidalgo is less studied despite being a potential dispersal route for mammals.The objectives of this study were to evaluate the presence and activity of terrestrial mammals in the riparian and non‑riparian zones of SMO.Results:Camera traps detected 15 mammalian species(i.e.,14 native and 1 domestic)in the non‑riparian zone,and 12 mammalian species in the riparian zone(i.e.,10 wild and 2 domestic).The riparian corridor was mainly used by opportunistic medium‑sized carnivores,while large carnivores and their potential prey were more frequent in the non‑riparian zone.Conclusions:Our findings suggest terrestrial mammals avoid the use of natural corridors due to the presence of domestic Dogs,cattle and humans and look for new dispersal routes to move through their habitat and find the resources they need to survive.Even though some species can use disturbed corridors to move and find resources,they will change their activity patterns to avoid contact with humans and potential threats like Dogs.It is,therefore,crucial to identify not one,but several corridors that must be preserved to improve the connectivity of terrestrial mammals in disturbed landscapes.

The domestic Dog,as a highly successful domestication model,is well known as a favored human companion.Exploring its domestication history should provide great insight into our understanding of the prehistoric development of human culture and productivity.Furthermore,investigation on the mechanisms underpinning the morphological and behavioral traits associated with canid domestication syndrome is of significance not only for scientific study but also for human medical research.Current development of a multidisciplinary canine genome database,which includes enormous omics data,has substantially improved our understanding of the genetic makeup of Dogs.Here,we reviewed recent advances associated with the original history and genetic basis underlying environmental adaptations and phenotypic diversities in domestic Dogs,which should provide perspectives on improving the communicative relationship between Dogs and humans.

A new dataset of Dog breed images and a benchmark for fine-grained classification

In this paper, we introduce an image dataset for fine-grained classification of Dog breeds: the Tsinghua Dogs Dataset. It is currently the largest dataset for fine-grained classification of Dogs, including 130 Dog breeds and 70,428 real-world images. It has only one Dog in each image and provides annotated bounding boxes for the whole body and head. In comparison to previous similar datasets, it contains more breeds and more carefully chosen images for each breed. The diversity within each breed is greater,with between 200 and 7000+ images for each breed.Annotation of the whole body and head makes the dataset not only suitable for the improvement of finegrained image classification models based on overall features, but also for those locating local informative parts. We show that dataset provides a tough challenge by benchmarking several state-of-the-art deep neural models. The dataset is available for academic purposes at https://***/ThuDogs/.

Identification of potential oxidative stress biomarkers for spinal cord injury in erythrocytes using mass spectrometry

Oxidative stress is a hallmark of secondary injury associated with spinal cord injury.Identifying stable and specific oxidative biomarkers is of important significance for studying spinal cord injury-associated secondary injury.Mature erythrocytes do not contain nuclei and mitochondria and cannot be transcribed and translated.Therefore, mature erythrocytes are highly sensitive to oxidative stress and may become a valuable biomarker.In the present study, we revealed the proteome dynamics of protein expression in erythrocytes of beagle Dogs in the acute and subacute phases of spinal cord injury using mass spectrometry-based approaches.We found 26 proteins that were differentially expressed in the acute(0–3 days) and subacute(7–21 days) phases of spinal cord injury.Bioinformatics analysis revealed that these differentially expressed proteins were involved in glutathione metabolism, lipid metabolism, and pentose phosphate and other oxidative stress pathways.Western blot assays validated the differential expression of glutathione synthetase, transaldolase, and myeloperoxidase.This result was consistent with mass spectrometry results, suggesting that erythrocytes can be used as a novel sample source of biological markers of oxidative stress in spinal cord injury.Glutathione synthetase, transaldolase, and myeloperoxidase sourced from erythrocytes are potential biomarkers of oxidative stress after spinal cord injury.This study was approved by the Experimental Animal Centre of Ningxia Medical University, China(approval No.2017-073) on February 13, 2017.

Re-evaluating data quality of Dog mitochondrial,Y chromosomal,and autosomal SNPs genotyped by SNP array

Quality deficiencies in single nucleotide polymorphism （SNP） analyses have important implications. We used missingness rates to investigate the quality of a recently published dataset containing 424 mitochonddal, 211 Y chromosomal, and 160 432 autosomal SNPs generated by a semicustom Illumina SNP array from 5 392 Dogs and 14 grey wolves. Overall, the individual missingness rate for mitochondrial SNPs was -43.8%, with 980 （18.1%）individuals completely missing mitochondrial SNP genotyping （missingness rate=l）. In males, the genotype missingness rate was -28.8% for Y chromosomal SNPs, with 374 males recording rates above 0.96. These 374 males also exhibited completely failed mitochondrial SNPs genotyping, indicative of a batch effect. Individual missingness rates for autosomal markers were greater than zero, but less than 0.5. Neither mitochondrial nor Y chromosomal SNPs achieved complete genotyping （locus missingness rate=0）, whereas 5.9% of autosomal SNPs had a locus missingness rate=l. The high missingness rates and possible batch effect show that caution and rigorous measures are vital when genotyping and analyzing SNP array data for domestic animals. Further improvements of these arrays will be helpful to future studies.
