Association of dietary pattern during Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus： A Prospective Cohort Study in Northern China

Objective To examine the association of maternal dietary patterns during pregnancy with gestationa diabetes mellitus （GDM） in northern China. Methods The dietary intakes of pregnant women were recorded twice by 24-hour dietary recalls for three days prior to having been diagnosed with GDM, at 5-15 and 24-28 gestational weeks, respectively. GDM was diagnosed, and serum glycosylated hemoglobin （HbAlc） was measured at 24-28 weeks. dietary patterns were assessed by factor analysis. The association of the dietary pattern with GDM and HbAlc was examined by multiple logistic models. Results Of 753 participants, 64 （8.5%） were diagnosed with GDM. Four dietary patterns were identified： Western pattern （dairy, baked/fried food and white meat）, traditional pattern （light-colored vegetables, fine grain, red meat and tubers）, mixed pattern （edible fungi, shrimp/shellfish and red meat） and prudent pattern （dark-colored vegetables and deep-sea fish）. Compared with the prudent pattern, both the Western pattern and the traditional pattern were associated with an increased risk of GDM （aOR = 4.40, 95% CI： 1.58-12.22; aOR = 4.88, 95% Ch 1.79-13.32） and a high level of HbAlc （aOR = 12.37, 95% Ch 1.47-103.91; aOR = 26.23, 95% CI： 2.54-270.74）. Compared to the lowest quartile （Q）, 0.3 of the Western pattern scores and Q3-Q4 of the traditional pattern scores were associated with a higher risk of GDM. Conclusion The consumption of the Western pattern or the traditional pattern during pregnancy may increase the risk of GDM.

CHD （coronary heart disease） is the single most important cause of death and, more importantly, the single biggest cause of premature death in modem, industrialized countries. On the basis of summarized results in respect to assessing file nutritional status and dietary pattern of coronary heart diseased patients, it was concluded that nutritional status of control group was better as compared to diseased group. The dietary pattern of diseased group was similar to control group.

Objective: Plant-based diets have multiple health benefits for cancers;however, little is known about the association between plant-based dietary patterns and esophageal cancer(EC).This study presents an investigation of the prospective associations among three predefined indices of plant-based dietary patterns and the risk of ***: We performed endoscopic screening for 15,709 participants aged 40-69 years from two high-risk areas of China from January 2005 to December 2009 and followed the cohort until December 31, 2022. The overall plant-based diet index(PDI), healthful plant-based diet index(h PDI), and unhealthful plant-based diet index(u PDI), were calculated using survey responses to assess dietary patterns. We applied Cox proportional hazard regression to estimate the multivariable hazard ratios(HRs) and 95% confidence intervals(95% CIs) of EC across 3plant-based diet indices and further stratified the analysis by ***: The final study sample included 15,184 participants in the cohort. During a follow-up of 219,365person-years, 176 patients with EC were identified. When the highest quartile was compared with the lowest quartile, the pooled multivariable-adjusted HR of EC was 0.50(95% CI, 0.32-0.77) for h PDI. In addition, the HR per 10-point increase in the h PDI score was 0.42(95% CI, 0.27-0.66) for ECs. Conversely, u PDI was positively associated with the risk of EC, and the HR was 1.80(95% CI, 1.16-2.82). The HR per 10-point increase in the u PDI score was 1.90(95% CI, 1.26-2.88) for ECs. The associations between these scores and the risk of EC were consistent in most subgroups. These results remained robust in sensitivity ***: A healthy plant-based dietary pattern was associated with a reduced risk of EC. Emphasizing the healthiness and quality of plant-based diets may be important for preventing the development of EC.

The Effects of dietary patterns on Metabolic Syndrome in Han and Mongolian adults in Liaoning Province of China

We aimed to investigate the association between dietary patterns and low HDL-C among the elderly population living in North China. Methods The data were from a national cross-sectional survey conducted in 2015. General information in terms of living habits, health status, and food intake using 24 h dietary recall for three consecutive days was procured, and the weight of edible oil and condiments recorded. Anthropometric index, blood pressure, and fasting serum lipids were measured using standard methods. dietary patterns were derived from food categories by exploratory factor analysis, and multivariate logistic regression was used to estimate the odds ratios of low HDL-C across quartiles of dietary patterns. Results Among 3387 elderly participants, 21.9% had low HDL-C levels. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, participants with highest score versus lowest score in the balanced dietary pattern had a decreased risk of low HDL-C(OR = 0.38, 95% CI: 0.16–0.88, p for trend = 0.013) in the group with a BMI of 27.1 kg/m and above. Compared to the lowest quartile, there was a statistically significant negative association between the highest scores of the Western dietary pattern and low HDL-C(OR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.17–0.82, p for trend = 0.018) in the group with a BMI of 21.6–24.8 kg/m. However, greater adherence to a thrifty dietary pattern(highest quartiles vs. lowest quartiles) was associated with increased risk of low HDL-C(OR = 3.31, 95% CI: 1.05–10.40, p for trend = 0.044), especially in the subgroup with a BMI of 21.6 kg/m and below. Conclusion The study revealed that it is urgent to develop district-specific dietary improvement plans for dyslipidemia based on the nutritional status of the elderly population in North China.

Association with dietary patterns of metabolic syndrome and its components in the Yi population of China

Metabolic syndrome(MetS) is a growing public health concern, which is a complex metabolic disorder consisting of abdominal obesity, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia. MetS could trigger many adverse conditions, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even cancers. Adverse lifestyle, socio-economic status, diet, and other environmental factors are associated with the risk of MetS. Diet is one of the modifiable risk factors for MetS, and evidence from Chinese populations is limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this investigation was to identify the main dietary patterns and to explore the different relationships between these patterns and MetS in Han and Mongolian populations in China. Methods This is a cross-sectional survey based on residents in Fuxin city, Liaoning Province, China, in 2021. A total of 2,758 participants with a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire(FFQ) were eventually included in this study after further data screening. The FFQ consisted of 24 food items, including nine frequency categories ranging from "almost never eat" to "three times or more per day". Participants reported their food intake frequency over the past year. We identified dietary patterns using principal components analysis. Orthogonal rotations using Kaiser s criterion(eigenvalues>1.3) were utilized to establish the number of factors. Only the absolute values of factor loading >0.20 were included in the analysis, as these items represented the foods with the strongest relationships to the identified factors. The dietary patterns were named according to the magnitude of the factor scores and the interpretability of the overall diet. MetS was defined by the Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in China(2020 Edition). Diet plays an important role in metabolic syndrome(MetS), but evidence for association between overall dietary patterns and MetS is scarce and inconsistent. The aim at this study was to evaluate the relationship between different dietary patterns and MetS among the Yi population of China. Methods This study recruited people aged more than 18 years from a cross-sectional study in the Liangshan region in Sichuan province. dietary information was obtained by a semi-quantitative 52-item food frequency questionnaire. MetS was defined according to Guidelines on the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia in Chinese adults(revised in 2016). Principal component factor analysis was used to define dietary patterns, and multivariate logistic regression model was used for estimate the odds ratios(OR) for metabolic syndrome across of factor score quartiles of each dietary pattern. Results A total of 1,906 subjects were evaluated in this study, among which 915 were men and 991 were women, 261(13.7%) was diagnosed with MetS. Principal component factor analysis identified 3 major dietary patterns,which explained 34.2% of total variance, based on the percentage of total daily intake from each food group: ‘plant-based food’, ‘animal food’ and ‘mixed food’. The ‘animal food’ dietary pattern was characterized by high intake of animal giblets, fish, eggs, fresh meat. The ‘plant-based food’ dietary pattern is based on intake of vegetables, mushroom and algae, legumes, oil. After controlling for potential confounders, the ‘animal food’ dietary pattern was associated with high risk of MetS compared with the lowest quartile(OR: 2.424,95%CI: 1.594-3.685), the ‘Plant-based food’ dietary pattern can reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome(OR: 0.619,95%CI: 0.401-0.955). The ‘mixed food’ dietary pattern was no associated with MetS and its components. Objective NaFeEDTA was considered as a promising iron fortificant for controlling iron deficiency anemia. Soy sauce is a suitable food carder for iron fortification and is a popular condiment in China. Iron absorption rates of NaFeEDTA and FeSO4 were observed and compared in adult female subjects. Methods The stable isotope tracer method was used in Chinese females consuming a typical Chinese diet. Ten healthy young Chinese women were selected as subjects in the 15-day study. A plant-based diet was used based on the dietary pattern of adult women in the 1992 National Nutrition Survey. Six milligram of 54Fe in 54FeSO4 soy sauce and 3 mg 5SFe in NaSSFeEDTA soy sauce were given to the same subjects in two days. Food samples and fecal samples were collected and analyzed. Results Iron absorption rates of NaFeEDTA and FeSO4 were 10.51%：~：2.83 and 4.73%＋2.15 respectively. The 5SFe （NaFeEDTA） absorption was significantly higher than that of 54Fe （FeSO4）（P〈0.01）. The iron absorption rate from NaFeEDTA was 1.2 times higher than that from FeSO4 in Chinese adult women consuming a typical Chinese diet. Conclusion The higher absorption rate of NaFeEDTA suggested that NaFeEDTA would be a better iron fortificant used in soy sauce for the controlling of iron deficiency anemia in China.
