The prevalence of depression among the empty-nest elderly in China:a meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies

Factors influencing the diagnosis and treatment of chronic prostatitis among urologists in China

Aim. To identify the factors influencing diagnosis and treatment of chronic prostatitis （CP） among Chinese urologists. Methods： A sample of 656 urologists from 29 provinces of China were asked to complete a questionnaire that explored attitudes towards CP as well as diagnosis and treatment patterns in the management of CP. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis schemes were used to determine the factors that influence the diagnosis and treatment of CP. Results： A total of 656 questionnaires were given out. All were returned and 410 of those were included in the final univariate and multivariate analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that belief of bacterial infection in the etiology of CP （odds ratio [OR], 2.544; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.650-3.923; P 〈 0.001） was the most significant factor influencing the routine performance of bacterial culture test. Using the same model, the type of hospital （OR, 2.799; 95% CI, 1.719-4.559; P 〈 0.001） and the routine use of the 4- or the 2-glass test （OR, 3.194; 95% CI, 2.069-4.931; P 〈 0.001） were determined to be significant factors influencing the use of the National Institutes of Health （NIH） new classification system. According to the same model, belief of bacterial infection in the etiology of CP （OR, 3.415; 95% CI, 2.024-5.762; P 〈 0.001） and the routine use of bacterial culture test （OR, 2.261; 95% CI, 1.364-3.749; P 〈 0.01） were important factors influencing the routine prescription of antibiotics. Conclusion： Our findings suggest that attitudes towards CP, and the characteristics of individual urologists＇ practices may influence the diagnosis and treatment of CP among Chinese urologists.

Prediction rule for estimating advanced colorectal neoplasm risk in average-risk populations in southern Jiangsu Province

Objective：The aim of this study was to establish the risk scoring system towards the advanced colorectal neoplasm （CN） risk in the average-risk populations in the southern Jiangsu Province,and to evaluate the screening ***：Totally 905 cases of the average-risk populations who received the colonoscopy were selected as the *** multivariate logistic regression analysis method was used to establish the scoring system towards the occurrence risk of the advanced tumor,and its screening efficacy was evaluated through the prediction consistency,distinguishing ability and screening ***：The scoring system consisted of five variables,namely age,gender,coronary heart disease,egg intake and stool *** results revealed that it had good prediction consistency （P=0.205） and distinguishing ability [the area under the receiver operating characteristic （ROC） curve was 0.75,with 95％ confidence interval （95％ CI） of 0.69-0.82].Thus,2.5 points was set as the screening cutoff value,and its sensitivity,specificity,accuracy,positive predictive value,negative predictive value,positive likelihood ratio and negative likelihood ratio were 93.8 ％,47.6％,50.1％,9.1％,99.3％,1.79 and 0.13,***：The established scoring system had good screening efficacy,and can be used as the screening tool applying to the CN screening within the average-risk populations in the southern Jiangsu Province.

An Association between Immunosenescence and CD4^+CD25^+ Regulatory T Cells: A Systematic Review

Objective Age-related increment of the prevalence of CD4^＋CD25^＋ regulatory T （Treg） cells were described controversially, and whether such changes explain immune dysfunction in the elderly is still unclear. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the role of the Tregs in immunosenescence. Methods Medline and manual searches were performed to identify all published epidemiological and animal studies investigating the efficacy of the association between immunosenescence and Treg cells. Results It was founded that the frequency, phenotypic characteristics, and number/function of Tregs were altered significantly with aging. Medical conditions in individuals with advanced ageas well as apoptosis intensity of Treg cells had an impact on the accumulation of Tregs which in turn could deteriorate cytotoxic activity of CD8＋ T and NK cells and production of IL-2. The range of immune cells that could be suppressed by Treg cells was quite wide and covered CD4^＋CD25^＋ T cells, NK cells, dendritic cells and even monocytes. These changes were observed both in humans and experimental animals. Besides, it was believed that frequency of Tregs increased with age and was accompanied by intensified suppressive activity for Tregs in patients, for example, with Alzheimer disease （AD） and Parkinson disease （PD）. The impaired condition of CD4＋ T cells, so-called immunosenescence, rendered transplant recipients less responsive to an allogeneic kidney graft, an effect that was limited to transplant recipients who were aged over 60 years. Conclusions Treg cells are associated with immunosenescence. All these changes contribute to the aging-related decline of immune responses and lead to the higher risk of immune-mediated diseases, cancer or infections in aged individuals.

Influencing factors on efficacy of summer acupoint application treatment for allergic rhinitis:a retrospective study

OBJECTIVE:Allergic rhinitis(AR) is a common health *** acupoint application treatment(SAAT) is reported to effectively treat and prevent AR from seasonal *** the present study,we aimed to evaluate its effects,especially on the course of AR,through a retrospective ***:A cross-sectional multicenter study was performed based on patients treated between 2008 and 2009 in 13 clinical centers in China.A total of 1058 outpatients aged ≥2 years with documented AR and ≥1 year SAAT were eligible for enrollment.A case report form(CRF) was completed by both patient and *** CRF was designed to collect data on the patient's history of SAAT,AR condition,and self-reported health *** outcomes(dependent variables) were incidence and intensity of AR and concomitant medications *** were analyzed with ordinal logistic regression(OLR).RESULTS:Treatment course and seasonal pattern of AR were related to all dependent variables *** controlling for sample bias and confounding factors,the findings suggested that a 3-year treatment course had better efficacy(OR/incidence of AR:2.57,95%CI:1.76-3.76;OR/intensity of AR:2.17,95%CI:1.50-3.17;OR/concomitant medications:2.20,95% CI:1.50-3.23) compared with a 2-year or less treatment ***:The results showed that:1)the length of treatment course was positively associated with the efficacy of SAAT(the longer the treatment course,the better the efficacy);and 2)SAAT was more efficacious in treating seasonal AR than non-seasonal AR.

Investigation of regurgitation and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux in Indonesian infants

AIM:To evaluate the incidence of regurgitation and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux in Indonesian infants. METHODS:In a cross-sectional study at the University Outpatient Clinic for vaccination in Jakarta,138 mothers of healthy infants less than 12-mo old were prospectively asked to report the frequency of regurgitation. RESULTS:Whatever the age was,some infants did not regurgitate(from 10% during the first month of life to 67% in 1-year-old infants).Regurgitation of at least once a day was reported in 77% of infants younger than 3 *** regurgitation decreased to 12% in the 9-12 mo old group. Reported peak prevalence was 81%(26/32)during the first month of *** decreased sharply between the 4-6 and 7-9 mo old groups(from 44% to 9%).The longer the regurgitation persisted,the more frequently the mother perceived regurgitation as a *** and frequency of regurgitation,back arching,irritability,crying and refusal of feeding were the symptoms causing maternal *** longer the regurgitation persisted,the more frequently the mothers viewed it as a health problem. CONCLUSION:Regurgitation occurs frequently in Indonesian infants,and is a frequent cause of concern to mothers.

Determination of chemical composition of gall bladder stones:Basis for treatment strategies in patients from Yaounde,Cameroon

AIM:Gallstone disease is increasing in sub-saharan Africa (SSA).In the west, the majority of stones can be dissolved with bile salts,since the major component is *** medical therapy is expensive and not readily accessible to poor populations of *** was therefore necessary to analyze the chemical composition of biliary stones in a group of patients,so as to make the case for introducing bile salt therapy in ***: All patients with symptomatic gallstones were recruited in the study. All stones removed during cholecystectomy were sent to Houston for x-ray diffraction *** on age, sex, serum cholesterol,and thepercentage by weight of cholesterol, calcium carbonate, and amorphous material in each stone was entered into a preestablished proforma. Frequencies of the major components of the stones were ***:Sixteen women and ten men aged between 27 and 73 (mean 44.9) years provided stones for the *** majority of patients (65.38%) had stones with less than 25% of *** material made up more than 50% and 100% of stones from 16 (61.53%) and 9 (34.61%) patients ***:Cholesterol is present in small amounts in a minority of gallstones in Yaounde. Dissolution of gallstones with bile salts is unlikely to be successful.

Crohn's disease and risk of fracture: does thyroid disease play a role?

AIM: To assess the role of thyroid disease as a risk for fractures in Crohn's ***: A cross-sectional study was conducted from 1998 to 2000. The study group consisted of 210 patients with Crohn's disease. A group of 206 patients without inflammatory bowel disease served as controls. Primary outcome was thyroid disorder. Secondary outcomes included use of steroids, immunosuppressive medications, surgery and incidence of ***: The prevalence of hyperthyroidism was similar in both groups. However, the prevalence of hypothyroidism was lower in Crohn's patients (3.8 % vs 8.2 %, P=0.05).Within the Crohn's group, the use of immunosuppressive agents (0 % vs11 %), steroid usage (12.5 % vs37 %), small bowel surgery (12.5 % vs 28 %) and large bowel surgery (12.5 % vs27 %) were lower in the hypothyroid subset as compared to the euthyroid subset. Seven (3.4 %) Crohn'spatients suffered fracture, all of whom were ***: Thyroid disorder was not found to be associated with Crohn's disease and was not found to increase the risk for fractures. Therefore, screening for thyroid disease is not a necessary component in the management of Crohn's disease.
