The critical period hypothesis originated from biology and then was introduced into the field of linguistics. This paper introduces the concept of the critical period hypothesis for language acquisition and some relevant literatures＇ research of critical period hypothesis and English teaching in China as well as analyzing the research situation. From this contrast and analysis, the enlightenment from the critical period hypothesis for language acquisition to English teaching in China is much easier to obtain. This paper determines that the influence of the critical period hypothesis on second language acquisition and foreign language learning is still unclear.

The critical period hypothesis believe that the younger the learner is, the better he or she can master the language. Based on the critical period hypothesis and empirical research, the author points out that learner at different ages have their own advantage to master English. It is untrue to learn a language as early as possible. Thus critical period hypothesis is proved of one-side view. The author suggests that school should make different right teaching plans, according to different advantages at different ages. Finally, the author provides some suggestions and strategies on school English education in the context of China.

The goal of this paper is to extend our knowledge on the basic argument: age of acquisition–proficiency correlations through the comments on Ellen Bialystok’s original paper--The structure of age: in search of barriers to second language acquisition. On such an objection, this paper tries to demonstrate three processes of comments: theoretical background of E. Bialystok’s paper; introduction to author’s critique; arguments supporting the claim that second-language(L2) acquisition is not to be significantly constrained by the age factor that circumscribe a critical period for native-like attainment. With the assessment of E. Bialystok’s research, this paper tends to make comments on the perspective of bilingualism approach.
