A Numerical Study of Mesoscale Vortex Formation in the Midlatitudes:The Role of Moist Processes

In this study, a three-dimensional mesoscale model was used to numerically simulate the well-known "98.7" heavy rainfall event that affected the Yangtze Valley in July 1998. Two experiments were conducted to analyze the impact of moist processes on the development of meso-β scale vortices(MβV) and their triggering by mesoscale wind perturbation(MWP). In the experiment in which the latent heat feedback(LHF) scheme was switched off, a stable low-level col field(i.e., saddle field—a region between two lows and two highs in the isobaric surface) formed, and the MWP triggered a weak MβV. However, when the LHF scheme was switched on as the MWP was introduced into the model, the MβV developed quickly and intense rainfall and a mesoscale low-level jet(mLLJ) were generated. The thickness of the air column and average temperature between 400 and 700 hPa decreased without the feedback of latent heat, whereas they increased quickly when the LHF scheme was switched on, with the air pressure falling at low levels but rising at upper levels. A schematic representation of the positive feedbacks among the mesoscale vortex, rainfall, and mLLJ shows that in the initial stage of the MβV, the MWP triggers light rainfall and the latent heat occurs at low levels, which leads to weak convergence and ageostrophic winds. In the mature stage of the MβV, convection extends to the middle-to-upper levels, resulting in an increase in the average temperature and a stretching of the air column. A low-level cyclonic circulation forms under the effect of coriolis torque, and the m LLJ forms to the southeast of the MβV.

A time-dependent quantum wave packet method is used to investigate the dynamics of the Li + H(D)Cl reaction based on a new potential energy surface(J. Chem. Phys. 146 164305(2017)). The reaction probabilities of the coriolis coupled(CC) and centrifugal sudden(CS) calculations, the integral cross sections, the reaction rate constants are obtained. The rate constants of the Li + HCl reaction are within the error bounds at low temperature. A comparison of the CC and CS results reveals that the coriolis coupling plays an important role in the Li + H(D)Cl reaction. The CC cross sections are larger than the CS results within the entire energy range, demonstrating that the coriolis coupling effect can more effectively promote the Li + DCl reaction than the Li + HCl reaction. It is found that the isotope effect has a great influence on the title reaction.

Many measurements on the time gain/loss of the atomic clocks orbiting the spinning Earth have been done.The time gain/loss of the atomic clocks orbiting the spinning Earth is called gravitomagnetic clock effects.Clock effects have been well studied from the consideration of the relativity theory and the effects are thought to be relativistic sequels.However,no studies has been done from the physics of Newton and the electrodynamics of Maxwell.In this paper,we have studied clock effects from Newton-Maxwell consideration and have shown that clock effects could be considered as simple consequences of Newton’s physics and Maxwell’s electrodynamics.

In this paper the influence of an impressed coriolis force field on the configuration of a turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection problem is investigated in an experimental and numerical study. The main purpose of both studies lie on the analysis of a possible stabilising effect of a coriolis acceleration on the turbulent unsteady structures inside the fluid. The relative coriolis acceleration which is caused in the atmosphere by the earth rotation is realised in the experimental study by a uniform-rotational movement of the setup in a large-scale centrifuge under hyper-gravity. The same conditions as in the atmosphere in the beginning of a twister or hurricane should be realised in the experiment. The investigated Rayleigh numbers lie between 2.33 × 106 ≤ Ra ≤ 4.32 × 107.

EVALUATION OF CORRECTIONS ON TURBULENT FLUXES OBTAINED BY EDDY COVARIANCE METHOD IN HIGH WINDS

This paper investigates processing of fast-response data and corrections of turbulent fluxes obtained by using eddy covariance method based on data collected at an offshore observation tower during three Cold-intrusion(CI)events in the South China Sea in 2010. This study presents the data processing procedure in detail and compares frictional velocities(u*), sensible heat fluxes(H) and latent heat fluxes(LE) yielded by using different averaging periods and different coordinate rotation methods; evaluates the sonic temperature correction for sensible heat flux and the Webb correction for latent heat flux as a function of 10 m wind speed(u10) during the CIs. The results show(1) that the different averaging periods of 30 min and 10 min cause biases of u*(H, LE) within 5%(15%, 62%). The values of u*(H,LE) averaged from 30 mins are mostly larger than those averaged from 10 mins. We suggest that the averaging period of 10 min is not sufficiently long to capture all scale eddies and recommend 30 min averaging period in calculating turbulent fluxes using eddy covariance method during CIs;(2) that the values of u*(H, LE) obtained from double rotation(DR2) and those obtained from planar fit rotation(PF) have good agreements and correlation coefficients between them are larger than 0.99. Because PF method requires unchanged environment and it is easier to apply DR2 method, we suggest DR2 coordinate rotation method in processing fast-response data; and(3) that the median values of frictional velocity(sensible heat flux and latent heat flux) binned according to 2 m s^(-1) intervals of u_(10) increase(decrease,increase) by less than 9%(4%, 10%) by coriolis corrections(sonic temperature corrections, Webb corrections), which decreases(decreases, increases) with increasing u10 when u10 are 5-17 m s^(-1).

The purpose of this research is to show that Foaucault pendulum as well as other coriolis effects, which are normally studied in a rotating coordinate system, can also be analyzed in a fixed reference frame. To this end, Foucault pendulum and other coriolis effects are studied in inertial reference frames. The approach is simple, yet rigorous, and the results are exactly the same as those obtained in non-inertial reference frames but without resorting to some of the assumptions that are needed in rotating coordinate systems.

Based on the ultra-shallow water storm surge theory proposed by Qin and Feng (1975), an ultra-shallow water storm surge model, taking into consideration the effect of the earth’s rotation and the quadratically depth-varying eddy viscosity, is developed. Using the model wind stress fields as a guide for representing the effect of wind stress forcing in our model, a numerical investigation of the Bohai Sea wind surge is made. As a better means for solving the mathematical model, the Galerkin finite element technique is employed in numerical solutions. Under the control of the main weather situation, namely, the cold wave combined with the extratropical cyclone, two storm surge processes experienced on the Bohai Sea are simulated numerically. It is found that the experimental results, in the main, are in agreement with the observations.
