In response to the evolution of science and technology from compartmentalization to reunification, the study of complex systems and multi-scale methodology has received increasing attention from various scientific disciplines and engineering fields, so much so that complexity has sometimes been called the science of the 21^st century with multi-scale methodology as an accompanying challenge. Although there is still perplexity in these aspects, their importance is not to be ignored. For instance, Science published a special issue on complexity science （Science, 1999）, and many institutions related to these two aspects have been established worldwide. Overview The research group for nonlinear dynamics and complex systems is a virtual team comprised of some young re- searchers of common research interest in the School of Physics and Information Technology with the aim of improving the local academic environment and promoting scientific collaborations domestically and worldwide. The research interest of the group is currently focused on the dynamical behaviors of various nonlinear systems, with the subjects investigated ranging from classical to quantum systems, from low dimensional to spatiotemporal systems.

This paper adopts the concept of dynamic feedback systems to model the behavior of financial markets, or more specifically, the stock market from a dynamic system point of view. Based on a feedback adaptation scheme, the authors model the movement of a stock market index within a framework that is composed of an internal dynamic model and an adaptive filter. The output-error model is adopted as the internal model whereas the adaptive filter is a time-varying state space model with instrumental variables. Its input-output behavior, and internal as well as external forces are then identified. Special attention has also been paid to the recent financial crisis by examining the movement of Dow Jones Industrial Average （DJIA） as an example to illustrate the advantage of the proposed framework. Supported by time-varying causality tests, five influential factors from economic and sentiment aspects are introduced as the input of this framework. Testing results show that the proposed framework has a much better prediction performance than the existing methods, especially in complicated economic situations. An application of this framework is also presented with focuses on forecasting the turning periods of the market trend. Realizing that a market trend is about to change when the external force begins to exhibit clear patterns in its frequency responses, the authors develop a set of rules to recognize this kind of clear patterns. These rules work well for stock indexes from US, China and Singapore.

Rotating consensus control of double-integrator multi-agent systems with event-based communication

This paper solves the rotating consensus problem for a group of double-integrator agents with event-based communication only. We propose a distributed event-based rotating consensus protocol, which guarantees that a consensus regarding both position and velocity is achieved when all agents exhibit circular motion around the same center. It is observed that overall less communication is required as the communication between agents is only needed at event times. Moreover, with the proposed event-based protocol, it is proved that Zeno behavior can be strictly avoided for each agent. Numerical simulations show that this event-based control law can efficiently solve the rotating consensus problem.

We present a review of our recent research in econophysics, and focus on the comparative study of Chinese and western financial markets. By virtue of concepts and methods in statistical physics, we investigate the time correlations and spatial structure of financial markets based on empirical high-frequency data. We discover that the Chinese stock market shares common basic properties with the western stock markets, such as the fat-tail probability distribution of price returns, the long-range auto-correlation of volatifities, and the persistence probability of volatilities, while it exhibits very different higher-order time correlations of price returns and volatilities, spatial correlations of individual stock prices, and large-fluctuation dynamic behaviors. Furthermore, multi-agent-based models are developed to simulate the microscopic interaction and dynamic evolution of the stock markets.
