Correlation Analysis of Rubella Incidence and Meteorological Variables Based on Chinese Medicine Theory of Yunqi

Objective: To analyze the correlations between the incidence of rubella and meteorological factors over the same period and previous periods including 1, 2, 3 and 4 year ago(defined according to Chinese medicine Yunqi theory of "pestilence occurring after 3 years") and establish the rubella-meteorological forecast models for Beijing area, China. Methods: Data regarding the incidence of rubella between 1990 and 2004 from Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the meteorological variables including daily average temperatures, daily average wind speeds, average precipitations, average relative humidity, average vapor pressures and average low cloud covers between 1986 and 2004 were collected from the Beijing Meteorological Observatory. Descriptive statistics and back-propagation artificial neural network for forecast model’s establishment were adopted for data analysis. Results: The average temperature and relative humidity have a great contribution(100%) to the rubella morbidity. But the combination of other meteorological factors contributed to improve the accuracy of rubella-meteorological forecast models. The forecast accuracy could be improved by 76% through utilizing a combination of meteorological variables spanning from 3 years ago to the present rather than utilizing data from a single year or dating back to more earlier time than 3 years. Conclusions: There is a close relationship between the incidence of rubella and meteorological variables in current year and previous 3 years. This finding suggests that rubella prediction would benefit from consideration to previous climate changes.

Analysis on Composition Rules of Chinese Patent Drugs Treating Pain-Related Diseases Based on Data Mining Method

Objective: To analyze the composition rules of oral prescriptions in the treatment of headache, stomachache and dysmenorrhea recorded in National Standard for Chinese Patent Drugs(NSCPD) enacted by Ministry of Public Health of China and then make comparison between them to better understand pain treatment in different regions of human body. Methods: Constructed NSCPD database had been constructed in 2014. Prescriptions treating the three pain-related diseases were searched and screened from the database. Then data mining method such as association rules analysis and complex system entropy method integrated in the data mining software Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance Support System(TCMISS) were applied to process the data. Results: Top 25 drugs with high frequency in the treatment of each disease were selected, and 51, 33 and 22 core combinations treating headache, stomachache and dysmenorrhea respectively were mined out as well. Conclusions: The composition rules of the oral prescriptions for treating headache, stomachache and dysmenorrhea recorded in NSCPD has been summarized. Although there were similarities between them, formula varied according to different locations of pain. It can serve as an evidence and reference for clinical treatment and new drug development.

Effectiveness and Safety of Chinese Medicine for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of Chinese medicine(CM) for Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF) patients. Methods: To screened relevant articles, Pub Med, Cochrane Library, Excerpta Medica Datase(EMBASE), China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), Chinese VIP Information(VIP), Wanfang Database and Chinese Biomedical Database(CBM) were searched in English or Chinese until December 2015 for randomized controlled trials, which compared CM treatment(CM group) with Western medicine or placebo(control group) on IPF. The outcome measures included acute exacerbation, pulmonary function, the St George’s respiratory questionnaire(SGRQ) scores, 6-minute walk test(6 MWT) distance, adverse events and mortality. Results: This meta-analysis included 25 randomized controlled trials involving 1,471 patients. Compared with the control group, CM group was superiori in reducing the risk of exacerbation [relative risk(RR)=0.40, 95% CI 0.22 to 0.72, P0.05). This meta-analysis also revealed that CM therapy significantly decreased the SGRQ score(SMD=–0.60, 95% CI –1.14 to –0.05, P0.05) between CM and control groups. Conclusions: The pooled outcomes suggest that CM treatment appears benefit in reducing the risk of exacerbation, improving lung function and decreasing the incidence of adverse effects and enhancing the quality of life. Diabetic retinopathy(DR),a chronic microvascular retinal disorder leading to retinal nonperfusion and ischemia,is one of the leading causes of blindness among individuals of working age.In?ammation and neovascularization play important roles in the development of DR,especially proliferative DR(PDR).Therapies with Chinese medicines(CMs) that improve microcirculation complementary to conventional treatments increase the chances of delaying PDR development and improving visual acuity in diabetes patients.This review aimed to introduce promising CMs targeting DR patients in clinical practice,together with their underlying molecular mechanisms.

Effects of Mitochondrial Dysfunction via AMPK/PGC-1α Signal Pathway on Pathogenic Mechanism of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy and the Protective Effects of Chinese Medicine

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease of peripheral nervous system with high energy requirement. The adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase(AMPK)/peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α(PGC-1α) axis plays a key role in regulating mitochondrial energy metabolism. Increasing preclinical evidences have shown that inhibition of AMPK/PGC-1α pathway leading to mitochondrial dysfunction in neurons or Schwann cells contributes to neuron apoptosis, distal axonopathy and nerve demyelination in DPN. Some Chinese medicine formulae or extracts from herbs may have potential neuroprotective effects on DPN via activating AMPK/PGC-1α pathway and improving mitochondrial function.

Has Chinese always been an analytic language?Effects of writing on language evolution

Chinese is commonly believed to be an analytic language,but evidence from philological works and cross-linguistic comparisons clearly suggests that various morphological operations existed in Old Chinese.The loss of Chinese morphology can be explained by the ideographic nature of Chinese characters:the Chinese language has been evolving in a way that stabilizes the pronunciation of each character.The effects of writing systems on language evolution can be widely observed from world languages,while writing per se has been evolving along the path of phonetization driven mainly by borrowings instead of conscious linguistic analysis.In history,language never picked writing systems based on linguistic features;instead,writing systems affect the evolutionary paths of languages:single signs of a writing system stabilize the basic units of the language.

Novel KDM6A mutation in a Chinese infant with Kabuki syndrome: A case report

BACKGROUND Kabuki syndrome(KS)is a rare syndrome characterized by multisystem congenital anomalies and developmental disorder.KMT2D and KDM6A mutations were identified as the main causative genes in KS patients.There are few case reports and genetic analyses,especially of KDM6A gene mutation,in China.CASE SUMMARY This study reports a de novo KDM6A mutation in a Chinese infant with KS.A 2-month-old Chinese baby was diagnosed with KS,which manifested as hypoglycemia,congenital anal atresia at birth,feeding difficulties,hypotonia,and serious postnatal growth retardation.He died of recurrent respiratory infections at age 13 mo.DNA sequencing of his blood DNA revealed a novel KDM6A frameshift mutation(c.704_705delAG,p.N236Sfs*26)(GRCh37/hg19).CONCLUSION We present a Chinese KS patient with a novel KDM6A frameshift mutation(c.704_705delAG,p.N236Sfs*26)(GRCh37/hg19),broadening the mutation spectrum.

High-dose ruthenium-106 plaque therapy for circumscribed choroidal hemangioma: a retrospective study of 25 Chinese patients

AIM:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ruthenium-106(106Ru)plaque radiotherapy at a dose(>50 Gy)higher than recommended(29-50 Gy)for treatment of circumscribed choroidal hemangioma(CCH)in Chinese patients.METHODS:This retrospective study included 25symptomatic CCH patients undergoing 106Ru plaque brachytherapy involving 25 eyes between January 2005and August 2016.Ophthalmic examination was performed at the baseline and at each post-treatment follow-up visit,using best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),dilated fundus examination,and B-scan ultrasonography.The primary efficacy outcome measures included the changes in BCVA and hemangioma dimensions at the last followup visit from the baseline.RESULTS:The mean follow-up duration was 28.0±26.6(range,12-110)mo.All the hemangiomas were located in the posterior pole except for two involving the fovea.The mean apex dose of 106Ru plaque radiotherapy was84.4±19.7 Gy.The mean BCVA improved from 41.4±29.3(0-97)at the baseline to 53.0±33.8(0-97)ETDRS letters at the last visit(P=0.01).The mean hemangioma height declined from 3.98±0.88(2.40-5.50)mm to 0.84±1.63(0-6.47)mm(P≤0.001),and the greatest linear diameter(GLD)reduced from 9.36±2.23(6.80-15.00)to 7.40±2.45(0-13.00)mm(P≤0.001).Hemangioma size increased in one(4%)eye with a worsened vision,and subretinal fluid completely resolved in all but one patient(4%).Radiationrelated retinopathy was observed in two patients at posttreatment 9 and 11mo,respectively.CONCLUSION:106Ru plaque brachytherapy at a dose(>50 Gy)higher than recommended(29-50 Gy)is an effective treatment regimen for symptomatic CCH associated with significantly improved visual acuity and a favorable safety profile in Chinese patients.

Chinese Herbal Medicine for Osteosarcoma in the Mouse: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: To summarize and critically assess the inhibitory effects of Chinese herbal medicine(CHM) on tumor volume and tumor weight for the treatment of osteosarcoma(OS) in mouse models. Methods:PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database(CNKI), Wanfang Database, VIP Database, and Chinese BioMedical(CBM) were searched since their inception dates to March10, 2016. Two reviewers independently selected the controlled studies estimating effects of CHM on mouse OS by administration in vivo. A pair-wise meta-analysis was performed. Twenty-five studies with adequate randomization were included in the systematic review. Results: CHM may signi?cantly inhibit OS growth in mice, as assessed using the tumor weight [20 studies, n=443; 290 for CHM and 153 for the control; pooled mean difference(MD)=–2.90; 95% confidence interval(CI): –3.50 to –2.31; P<0.01], tumor volume(16 studies, n=382; 257 for CHM and 125 for the control; pooled MD =–2.57; 95% CI: –3.33 to –1.80; P<0.01) and tumor growth inhibition rate. Conclusion: CHM could significantly inhibit the growth of OS in mouse models,which might be supportive for the design of preclinical and clinical trials in future.

A holistic strategy for quality and safety control of traditional Chinese medicines by the “iVarious” standard system

An effective quality control system is the key to ensuring the quality, safety and efficacy of traditional Chinese medicines(TCMs). However, the current quality standard research lacks top-level design and systematic design,mostly based on specific technologies or evaluation methods. To resolve the challenges and questions of quality control of TCMs, a brand-new quality standard system, named "iVarious", was proposed. The system comprises eight elements in a modular format. Meaning of every element was specifically illustrated via corresponding research instances. Furthermore, frankincense study was taken as an example for demonstrating standards and research process, based on the "i Various" system. This system highlighted a holistic strategy for effectiveness,security, integrity and systematization of quality and safety control standards of TCMs. The establishment of"i Various" integrates multi-disciplinary technologies and progressive methods, basis elements and key points of standard construction. The system provides a novel idea and technological demonstration for regulation establishment of TCMs quality standards.
