Assessing cardiovascular health Using Life＇s Simple 7 in a Chinese Population Undergoing Stroke Prevention

Background： The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association proposed a metric called Life＇s Simple 7 （LS7） to define cardiovascular health （CVH）. The presence of a large number of ideal components of CVH is associated with lower cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. We aimed to assess CVH using LS7 in a Chinese population undergoing primary and secondary stroke prevention. Methods： Patients with either ischemic stroke or cardiovascular risk factors were enrolled in the study from October 2010 to July 2013. LS7 components were scored as poor （0 points）, intermediate （1 point）, or ideal （2 points）. The overall LS7 score was categorized as inadequate （0-4）, average （5-9）, or optimal （10-14） CVH. The Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U-test, and Kruskal-Wallis test were used. Results： In total, 706 patients were enrolled. （1） The distribution of the overall LS7 score （n = 255） indicated that 9.4%, 82.4%, and 8.2% of the patients had inadequate, average, and optimal CVH, respectively. The proportion of patients with optimal CVH undergoing secondary stroke prevention was lower than that for patients undergoing primary stroke prevention （3.8% vs. 12.8%, P = 0,005）. The vast laaajority of participants （76.1%） presented with 〈2 ideal health components. （2） The proportions of patients with poor, intermediate, and ideal status, respectively, lbr the following LS7 components were assessed： Total cholesterol （n = 275; 5.1%, 73.8%, and 21.1%）, blood pressure （11 = 351 ; 32.5%. 59.0%, and 8.5%）, blood glucose （n = 280; 9.3%, 39.6%, and 51.1%）, physical activity （n = 540; 90.7%, 8.7%, and 0.6%）, diet （n = 524; 0.2%. 92.4%, and 7.4%）, smoking （n = 619： 20.7%, 2.9%, and 76.4%）, and body mass index （n = 259; 6.6%, 35.5%, and 57.9%）. Conclusions： Few Chinese patients undergoing stroke prevention had optimal CVH （determined using LS7）. Physical activity, sedentary behavior, and long-term cardiovascular risk in young people: A review and discussion of methodology in prospective studies

The long-term effects of physical activity （PA） or sedentary behavior on cardiovascular health in young people are not well understood. In this study, we use a narrative format to review the evidence for a prospective association with adiposity and other well-established biological cardiovascular risk factors in healthy young people, considering only studies with at least 2 years of follow-up. PA appears to elicit a long-term beneficial effect on adiposity and particularly markers of cardiovascular health. With adiposity, however, a few studies also reported that higher levels of PA were associated with higher levels of adiposity. Time spent sedentary does not appear to be related to adiposity or markers of cardiovascular health independent of PA. We then discuss the uncertainties in the underlying causal chain and consider a number of alternative modeling strategies, which could improve our understanding of the relationship in future studies. Finally, we consider the current methodology for assessing PA and sedentary time.

The protective role of(poly)phenols against metabolic disorders has been extensively studied in adults but not in *** assess associations of dietary(poly)phenols and their subclasses with cardiometabolic health parameters in adolescents.A cross-sectional study was conducted in 944 individuals aged 11–14 years enrolled in the SI!Program for Secondary Schools trial(NCT03504059).(Poly)phenol intake was assessed using semiquantitative food frequency questionnaires and the Phenol-Explorer *** measured cardiometabolic parameters were waist circumference(WC)age-sex Z-score,blood pressure(BP)age-sex Z-score,blood glucose(BG),triglycerides(TG),and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-c).Multilevel mixedeffect linear regression models were applied to examine the association between(poly)phenol quintiles and cardiometabolic health *** to the lowest quintile,adolescents in the highest quintile of total(poly)phenol intake had lower WC Z-scores,mean arterial pressure Z-scores,and HDL-c after multivariable *** WC Z-scores and HDL-c were lower in the highest quintile of flavonoid intake compared to the lowest *** highest quintile of phenolic acid intake was associated with a lower WC Z-score and TG levels,and the highest quintile of stilbene intake with lower BG and TG,and with higher HDL-c compared to the lowest quintile.A higher intake of(poly)phenols,especially flavonoids,phenolic acids,and stilbenes,was associated with better cardiometabolic parameters in adolescents.

Interconnected Challenges: Addressing the Bidirectional Relationship between Heart Failure and Cognitive Impairment through Targeted Intervention Strategies

This paper examines the bidirectional relationship between heart failure (HF) and cognitive impairment, underscoring the need for integrated intervention strategies to address these interconnected conditions effectively. Cognitive deficits often hinder the effective management of HF, leading to poorer treatment adherence and health outcomes, while the physiological stress of HF can further impair cognitive function, creating a complex interplay that complicates patient care. This study highlights the effectiveness of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in improving both cardiac and cognitive functions. By targeting the underlying physiological and neurobiological mechanisms of HF, these therapies enhance patient outcomes, leading to better adherence to treatment regimens and overall quality of life. Furthermore, the findings suggest that regular cognitive assessments should be integrated into HF management protocols, enabling early identification of cognitive impairment and timely intervention. Incorporating ACE inhibitors and CRT into standard care practices not only addresses the complexities of managing HF and cognitive decline but also fosters a holistic approach to patient health. Ultimately, this multifaceted strategy has the potential to significantly improve health outcomes, enhance the quality of care, and support sustainable management of patients with heart failure and cognitive impairment.

Linoleic (LA) and α-linolenic acids (ALA) are considered essential fatty acids (EFA) because they are not produced by the human body. This way, EFAs sources must come from the diet. The primary dietary source of n-3 fatty acids is ALA, found in seeds and seed oils. Other important sources are fish oils such as tuna, salmon and herring. Currently, numerous studies suggest possible benefits of essential fatty acids in human health, such as in cardiovascular, cognitive and eye health, and also during pregnancy and childhood. This paper also discusses the impact of fatty acids in human metabolism, and the available evidence regarding its risks. It addresses the relevant debate regarding a general ban of trans fatty acids (TFA) from the world food market, because of the cardiovascular risks associated with its consumption.

Is nitric oxide level affected in postmenopausal women with hypothyroidism?

AIMTo analyze serum levels of nitric oxide （NO）, an indicator of cardiovascular health, in post-menopausal females with and without hypothyroidism. METHODSNO was analyzed colorimetrically in 30 newly diag-nosed hypothyroid postmenopausal females and 30 postmenopausal females with normal thyroid profle. Results were compared and subjected to appropriate statistical analysis. RESULTSThe levels of serum NO were found to be significantlydecreased in postmenopausal females with hypothyroidismas compared to the levels in those with normal thyroidprofile （P value 〈 0.05）. A negative correlation of NOwas observed with thyroid stimulating hormone whereasa positive correlation of NO was observed with free T3 （FT3）, free T4 （FT4）, T3 and T4 though it was statistically signifcant only for FT4 among postmenopausal females with *** hypothyroid females may be at a risk of compromised cardiovascular health as indicated by low NO levels. Regular monitoring and risk assessment is essential for timely intervention.
