The effect of concentration of structurally-different carboxylic acids such as ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid （H4edta）, citric acid （H3cit）, tartaric acid （H2tart）, and acetic acid （HOAc） on growth and aggregation of calcium oxalate （CaOxa） in gel systems was comparatively investigated. H2tart and H3cit could change the morphology of cal- cium oxalate monohydrate （COM） and induce the formation of calcium oxalate dihydrate （COD）. H4edta could induce the formation of COD at a lower concentration of 0.33 mmol/L and have the strongest ability to inhibit aggregation of COM. HOAc inhibited COM aggregation only at a higher concentration than 500 mmol/L. With increasing the number of carboxylic groups in an acid or increasing the concentration of carboxylic acid, the capacity of this acid to induce COD formation and to inhibit growth and aggregation of COM crystals increased. That is, this capacity followed the order： H4edta〉H3cit〉H2tart〉〉HOAc. The result in this work suggested that the presence of H3cit and H2tart in urine played a role in the natural defense against stone formation.

The influence of sulfated polysaccharide （SPS） isolated from marine algae Sargassum fusiforme on the morphology and phase compositions of urinary crystal calcium oxalate was investigated in vitro by means of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. SPS maybe is a potential inhibitor to CaOxa urinary stones by inhibiting the growth of calcium oxalate monohydrate （COM）, preventing the aggregation of COM, and inducing the formation of calcium oxalate dihydrate （COD） crystals.

Effect of various counterions of tartrate on the crystallization of calcium oxalate in gel system was investigated using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Various tartrates with hydrogen (H2tart), sodium (Na2tart), potassium (K2tart), ammonium ((NH4)2tart), and a mixture of sodium and potassium cations (NaKtart) were considered. For H2tart, Na2tart, and (NH4)2tart, calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) was induced. However, for K2tart and NaKtart, calcium oxalate trihydrate (COT) was obtained.

The purpose of this work was to detect the properties of African green monkey renal epithelial cells （Vero） after oxidative injury and to study the mediation of the injured Vero on aggregation and formation of calcium oxalate crystals. This injury model was induced by 0.15 mmol/L H2O2 according to the pretest evaluation. The results suggested that H2O2 could injure Vero significantly and decrease cell viability in a time-dependent manner for exposure time of 0.5--2 h. After cell injury, the indexes connected with oxidative injury changed. The malondialdehyde （MDA） content and osteopontin （OPN） expression increased, while superoxide dismutase （SOD） level decreased. It resulted in the increase of both the amount of CaOxa crystals and the degree of crystal aggregation on the injured cells. This work indicated that injured cells promoted the formation of calcium oxalate monohydrate （COM） crystals, thus increased the risk of formation of urinary stone.

The effects of temperature and multifunctional sodium carboxylate additives on the phase composition and morphology of calcium oxalate (CaOxa) crystals grown in silica gel system were systematically investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectra (FT-IR). The sodium carboxylates investigated include: monocarboxylate sodium acetate (NaAc), disodium tartrate (Na2tart), trisodium citrate (Na3cit), and the disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Na2edta). The temperature range was from 7°C to 67°C. The crystallization temperature affects the phase compositions, the growth rate, and the morphology of CaOxa. First, the logarithm of the percentage of calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD) formed at a certain temperature (T) is proportional to the reciprocal of temperature (1/T). Second, the weight of CaOxa crystals decreases as decreasing the temperature. At a given temperature, the ability of the sodium carboxylates to induce COD follows the order: Na2edta Na3cit Na2tart NaAc. Third, the multicarboxylates can decrease the surface area of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM). It makes the edges and tips of COM crystals blunt and oval. All the three changes, an increase of the content of COD, a decrease of the weight of CaOxa crystals, and a decrease of the surface area of COM crystals, can inhibit the formation of CaOxa stones. These results support the clinical use of citrates and may be helpful in elucidating the mechanisms of the formation of CaOxa calculus. The adsorption of anionic surfactant sodium diisooctyl sulfosuccinate（AOT） onto calcium oxalate mono- hydrate（COM） and dihydrate（COD） with sizes of 50, 100 nm, 1, 3 and 10 μm was comparatively studied to simulate the interaction between urinary crystallites and urine components. The adsorption quantity of different concentrations of AOT onto COD and COM with different sizes was detected using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The crystalline phase transition of COM and COD before and after adsorption was analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The zeta potential of the crystal surface after adsorption of different concentrations of AOT was measured using a zeta potential analyzer. The adsorption quantity of AOT on COM and COD with different sizes was ranked in the following order： 50 nm〉100 nm〉1μm〉3 μm〉10 μm. The adsorption quantity of COM was greater than that of COD with the same size because the density of the positive charges on the COM surface was higher than that on COD surface. With the increase of AOT concentration, the adsorption curves of the large-sized COM and COD（3 and 10μm） were S-type, whereas the adsorption curves of the small-sized COM and COD（50 nm, 100 nm and 1μm） were linear. The adsorption capacities of small-sized COM and COD were much greater than those of the 3 and 10μm crystals. On the basis of the above results, we proposed a molecular model to summarize the absorption of AOT onto COM and COD crystals. Small crystals exhibit a large specific surface area and high surface energy. Thus, the adsorption capacities of them are stronger than those of large crystals. Overall, this study implies that small crystals can easily absorb anionic molecules in urine and may easily adhere to a negatively charged cell surface, thereby increasing the severity of cell injury.

The ring patterns of calcium oxalate crystals were induced by domains in Langmuir-Blodgett （LB） films of dipalmitoylpho- sphatidylcboline （DPPC）. The result was explained by the defects at the ring boundaries of liquid condensed （LC） and liquid expanded （LE） phases of LB film. These boundaries could provide less free energy and much more nucleating sites for COM crystals.

The inducing effect of potassium citrate （K3cit） on simultaneous growth of calcium oxalate mono-（COM）, di-（COD）, and trihydrate （COT） crystals in synthetic urine was observed with double diffusion gelatinous technique. K3cit can induce the formation of COD and COT, inhibit the aggregation and decrease the surface area of COM crystals. It supported the clinical use of K3cit and may provide important clues to this disease in cure and in search for new drugs.

Background:Dietary supplementation with citrate-containing juices may serve as an effective alternative to potassium citrate therapy for preventing calcium oxalate stone *** study was performed to evaluate whether consumption of lemon-tomato juice can decrease the tendency for stone formation in the urine of calcium oxalate stone *** and methods:The study was conducted as a prospective interventional randomized crossover clinical trial with a repeated-measures ***-two patients with calcium oxalate stones and no metabolic abnormalities in the urine treated with lithotripsy at a tertiary care center from August 2017 to July 2018 were *** a 14-hour overnight fasting,urine samples were collected after the patients consumed either milk only or milk and lemon-tomato *** urine was tested for multiple parameters,including urine pH,specific gravity,calcium-creatinine ratio,and supersaturation with sodium oxalate,followed by optical density measurement via ***:There were no significant differences in the background characteristics between the 2 *** optical density of the urine samples obtained after consumption of milk only was significantly higher than that after consumption of milk and lemon-tomato juice(mean=0.131 for milk only vs.0.053 for milk and lemon-tomato juice,pcalcium-creatinine ratio was similar between the groups(mean=0.141 for milk only vs.0.076 for milk and lemon-tomato juice,p=0.019).Conclusions:The addition of lemon-tomato juice as a source of citrate in the diet significantly decreases the established risk factors for calcium oxalate stone formation in *** study was prospectively registered at CTRI under number CTRI/2017/04/008312 on April 7,2017.
