An empirical study was addressed to explore the language switching selection based on conflict resolution task between bilinguals and monolinguals. The Double-Source interference task was designed to investigate the interaction of attentional network and bilingual＇s language conflict resolution capacity. ANOVA for repeated measurement was used to measure the main effect of different attentional networks. The response time of alerting network was significant faster than that of executive network. There was also a significant main effect of different groups of subjects that bilinguals responded faster than monolinguals when operating alerting and executive network. Language switching paradigm can be used to interpret the neuro-cognitive process of oral consecutive interpreting, so the teaching implication will be discussed in the present study.

The Effect of Dialect Experience on Mandarin Phonlogical Awareness

With the development of globalization, more and more people begin to learn and use a second language. For bilinguals who juggle two languages in their mind, one of the most compelling findings in recent bilingual research is that both languages are activated in parallel during bilingual language production. Thus, bilinguals need to determine which language to use according to specific communicative contexts, and to exert cognitive control to guarantee selecting lexical items in the intended language. In a series of experiments with behavioral, ERP, and fMRI measures, we examined the effect of short-term language switching training on the cognitive control mechanism in bilingual word production. The findings reveal the plasticity and complexity of the cognitive control mechanism as a function of bilingual experience, in particular in language switching.

Ecological Factors in Bilingual Development

The influence of dialect experience on the development of phonological awareness of standard Chinese(Mandarin or putonghua)was *** hundred and forty-eight 2,4, and 6graders,who speak Mandarin only(monolinguals)or Mandarin and Fuzhou,Putian or Minnan dialect(bilinguals),participated in the experiment,undertaking tests on their awareness of tone,syllable,onset,rime and sound *** to the view that bilingual phonological experience facilitates the development of phonological awareness,the results indicated that Mandarin monolinguals enjoyed a better development than the dialect-Mandarin bilinguals in the ability to distinguish onset,rime,and tone of Mandarin words,although they had little advantage over the bilinguals in the manipulation of syllables and sound *** also suggested that children of different dialects had different patterns of development in their phonological awareness.

Ecological Factors in Bilingual Development

Like the majority of developmental studies, studies on the development of bilingualism （BL） has also recognized the importance of individual-environment interaction in the development of bilingual abilities. Factors ranging from personal characteristic, such as age and gender, family members and peers, social structure, up to popular culture can affect the outcome of individuals’development;however, understandably, in most researches, due to the difficulty of controlling and dealing with all such factors, they are excluded from analyses, resulting in the less conclusive results. Thus, now that there are fair amounts of research on various aspects of bilingual development, it is perhaps time to ask broader questions about the way those factors contributes to the observed variations. Ecological theory, according to which the mutual interaction of an individual with his/her context takes place under four levels of intertwined environmental influences, has been shown to be a successful developmental model and it would be an appropriate framework to take to make a better understanding of individuals’ development of language. This thesis would be a holistic review based on such an approach, starting with the introduction of ecological theory and language;next, after defining different types of bilingualism and bilingual education （BE）, some myths surrounding these issues will be discussed, and then some actual findings and facts about the difference of bilinguals and monolinguals will be revealed. As discussed in this paper, many well established studies have pointed out the reasons leading to the existence of such myths, and have shown and supported the long lasting advantages of bilingualism over individuals’ language and cognitive development. Word Concreteness and Word Translatability:Relations and Implications for Second Language Acquisition

This study examined the relation between word concreteness and word translatability. Translatability was operationalized in terms of both lexical and semantic cross-transparency. Two separate scales were used to measure the level of concreteness of 123 target English words and their translatability into Chinese. The results of this study showed that word concreteness and translatability are significantly correlated, and that word concreteness determines the extent of semantic closeness between the translation of English and Chinese word pairs. Concreteness might be a variable that influences how translatable a word is between English and Chinese. However, this influence mainly applies to the semantic cross-transparency between the two languages, not the lexical cross-transparency. A link was proposed between the levels of translatability of a translation pair according to concreteness and associated properties. The paper also discusses the implications of the findings for second language learning and teaching, in particular the ＂translation effect＂ and teachers＇＂codeswitching＂ behavior.
