Helicobacter pylori Infection and Gastroduodenal Lesions: Prevalence and Associated Factors in Cote d’Ivoire

Objective: The objective is to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and highlight the determinants of the infection as well as the gastric histopathological lesions associated with this infection. Methods: This is a retrospective study carried out from August 01, 2015 to December 31, 2020 in Bouaké. It included all patients with gastric and/or duodenal lesion on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in whom gastric biopsies and histopathology results are available. Results: The study involved 510 patients (301 men and 209 women). The prevalence of Hp was 66.47% (339/510 patients). The presence of Hp was not significantly related to age and gender. Epigastralgia was the most common indication with no significant difference between the positive and negative Hp groups (65.37% vs 34.63%, p = 0.35). A significant difference was only observed for duodenal ulcers (84.31% Hp+ vs 15.69% Hp-, p = 0.004). Regarding histological lesions: Chronic and active gastritis was strongly related to the presence of Hp (p atrophy were not significantly associated with the presence of Hp. These precursor lesions of gastric cancer (metaplasia and atrophy) were, however, significantly related to chronic gastric disease with p = 0.02 and p Conclusion: The prevalence of Hp is high in Bouaké. Our study confirms the link between Hp infection and chronic and active gastritis.

Aim: To observe the effect of tamoxifen citrate on spermatogenesis and tubular morphology in rats. Methods: The effect of tamoxifen citrate i.g. at doses of 400 and 800 mg·kg·day-1 in 0.1 mL olive oil for 30 days on seminiferous tubular morphology, seminiferous epithelial diameter (STD), epithelial height (SEH), epididymal sperm count and percent abnormal sperm were evaluated at day 1, 12 and 36 after treatment. Controls were given the vehicle. Results: The higher dose resulted in tubular atrophy on day 31. The STD, SEH and sperm count were decreased and the abnormal spermatozoa increased in a dose-dependent manner with the maximal effect on day 36. Conclusion: Tamoxifen citrate induces tubular shrinkage and atrophy and sperm abnormality at a dose-dependent manner.

Introduction: Torsion of the spermatic cord (TSC) is a serious surgical emergency because it is responsible for acute ischemia that can lead to the loss of the testicle. Very few studies have been carried out in C?te d’Ivoire and particularly in Bouaké, on torsion of the testicle. The general objective of this work was to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of testicular torsion in our context. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study on 46 patients received urgently at the Teaching Hospital of Bouaké over a period of nine (9) years from December 01, 2010 to November 30, 2019 for torsion of the spermatic cord in adults. Results: The mean age of patients was 26.6 years with extremes of 17 to 41 years. 33 patients were seen before the sixth hour and 13 beyond. Scrotal pain, swelling of the hemibursa and testicular ascent were the dominant physical signs. Orchiectomy + contralateral testicular fixation was performed in 11 patients (23.9%). The average length of hospital stay was three (3) days. The immediate post-operative follow-up was simple. Late complications were marked by two testicular atrophy. Conclusion: Our series was marked by a high rate of orchiectomy. Actions to raise caregivers’ awareness of the population must be carried out so that they consult quickly in front of any painful stock market board to avoid the delay in diagnosis and management detrimental to the vitality of the torsional testicle.

Background: Involvement of lumbar spinal nerve root, revealed as pain, numbness or weakness in the lower limbs. Typically caused by the compression of nerve at the spine level. Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine the patients with clinically presumed lumbar radiculopathy and find the correlation between their electrodiagnostic study and magnetic resonance imaging. Setting, duration and study type: Retrospective cross-sectional study of one year (January 2019 - February 2020) in Shifa International Hospital Islamabad. Methods: A total of 96 patients with clinically suspected lumbar radiculopathy were included. Chi-square test, international business machines (IBM) SPSS rendition 21.0 was applied on the clinical information, electrodiagnostic study and MRI were coordinated and affectability and particularity were judged. Selected patients were undergone both electrodiagnostic study and magnetic imaging resonance in the selected 1-year span. The study investigated correlation between both diagnostic tools in lumbar radiculopathy patients. Expected outcomes: Anatomical specificity in seen through magnetic resonance imaging while physiological through electrodiagnostic study, which may not correlate in the evaluation of lumbar radiculopathy.

Role of the Notch Signaling Pathway in Fibrosis of Denervated Skeletal Muscle

In order to investigate the role of the Notch signaling pathway in skeletal muscle fibrosis after nerve injury, 60 Sprague-Dawley rats were selected and divided randomly into a control and two experimental groups. Group A served as controls without any treatment. Rats in groups B were injected intraperitoneally with 0.2 mL PBS and those in group C were injected intraperitoneally with 0.2 mL PBS+100 ymol/L, 0.2 mL N-[N-(3,5-difluorophenacetyl)-l-alanyl]- S-phenylglycine t-butyl ester (DAPT, a gamma-secretase inhibitor that suppresses Notch signaling) respectively, on postoperative days 1, 3, 7, 10, and 14 in a model of denervation-induced skeletal muscle fibrosis by right sciatic nerve transection. Five rats from each group were euthanized on postoperative days 1, 7, 14, and 28 to collect the right gastrocnemii, and hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining, immunohistochemistry test, real-time PCR, and Western blotting were performed to assess connective tissue hyperplasia and fibroblast density as well as expression of Notch 1, Jagged 1, and Notch downstream molecules Hes 1 and collagen I (COL I) on day 28. There was no significant difference in HE-stained fibroblast density between group B and C on postoperative day 1. However, fibroblast density was significantly higher in group B than in group C on postoperative days 7, 14, and 28. Notch 1, Jagged 1, Hes 1, and COL I proteins in the gastrocnemius were expressed at very low levels in group A but at high levels in group B. Expression levels of these proteins were significantly lower in group C than in group B (P<0.05), but they were higher in group C than in group A (P<0.05) on postoperative day 28. We are led to conclude that locking the Notch signaling pathway inhibits fibrosis progression of denervated skeletal muscle. Thus, it may be a new approach for treatment of fibrosis of denervated skeletal muscle.
