The growth-promoting hormones brassinosteroids(BRs)and their key signaling component BZR1 play a vital role in balancing normal growth and defense reactions.Here,we discovered that BRs and OsBZR1 up-regulated sakuranetin accumulation and conferred basal defense against Magnaporthe oryzae infection under normal conditions.Resource shortages,including phosphate(Pi)deficiency,potentially disrupt this growth-defense balance.OsSPX1 and OsSPX2 have been reported to sense Pi concentration and interact with the Pi signal mediator OsPHR2,thus regulating Pi starvation responses.In this study,we discovered that OsSPX1/2 interacts with OsBZR1 in both Pi-sufficient and Pi-deficient conditions,inhibit-ing BR-responsive genes.When Pi is sufficient,OsSPX1/2 is captured by OsPHR2,enabling most of OsBzR1 to promote plant growth and maintain basal resistance.In response to Pi starvation,more OsSPX1/2 is released from OsPHR2 to inhibit OsBZR1 activity,resulting in slower growth.Collectively,our study reveals that the OsBZR1-SPX1/2 module balances the plant growth-immunity trade-off in responsetoPiavailability.He Y.,Zhao Y.,Hu J.,Wang L.,Li L.,Zhang X.,Zhou Z.,Chen L.,Wang H.,Wang J.,and Hong G.(2024).The OsBZR1-OsSPX1/2 module fine-tunes the growth-immunity trade-off in Adaptation to phosphate availability in esponse to Pi availability.

Adaptation of Ocular Opponency Neurons Mediates Attention-Induced Ocular Dominance Plasticity

Previous research has shown that ocular dominance can be biased by prolonged attention to one eye.The ocular-opponency-neuron model of binocular rivalry has been proposed as a candidate account for this phenomenon.Yet direct neural evidence is still lacking.By manipulating the contrast of dichoptic testing gratings,here we measured the steady-state visually evoked potentials(SSVEPs)at the intermodulation frequencies to selectively track the activities of ocular-opponency-neurons before and after the“dichoptic-backward-movie”Adaptation.One hour of Adaptation caused a shift of perceptual and neural ocular dominance towards the unattended eye.More importantly,we found a decrease in the intermodulation SSVEP response after Adaptation,which was significantly greater when high-contrast gratings were presented to the attended eye than when they were presented to the unattended eye.These results strongly support the view that the Adaptation of ocular-opponency-neurons contributes to the ocular dominance plasticity induced by prolonged eye-based attention.

Detection of a temporal salient object benefits from visual stimulus-specific Adaptation in avian midbrain inhibitory nucleus

Food and predators are the most noteworthy objects for the basic survival of wild animals,and both are often deviant in both spatial and temporal domains and quickly attract an animal’s attention.Although stimulus-specific Adaptation(SSA)is considered a potential neural basis of salient sound detection in the temporal domain,related research on visual SSA is limited and its relationship with temporal saliency is uncertain.The avian nucleus isthmi pars magnocellularis(Imc),which is central to midbrain selective attention network,is an ideal site to investigate the neural correlate of visual SSA and detection of a salient object in the time domain.Here,the constant order paradigm was applied to explore the visual SSA in the Imc of pigeons.The results showed that the firing rates of Imc neurons gradually decrease with repetitions of motion in the same direction,but recover when a motion in a deviant direction is presented,implying visual SSA to the direction of a moving object.Furthermore,enhanced response for an object moving in other directions that were not presented ever in the paradigm is also observed.To verify the neural mechanism underlying these phenomena,we introduced a neural computation model involving a recoverable synaptic change with a“center-surround”pattern to reproduce the visual SSA and temporal saliency for the moving object.These results suggest that the Imc produces visual SSA to motion direction,allowing temporal salient object detection,which may facilitate the detection of the sudden appearance of a predator.

Comparative proteomics reveals the response and Adaptation mechanisms of white Hypsizygus marmoreus against the biological stress caused by Penicillium

White Hypsizygus marmoreus is a popular edible mushroom.Its mycelium is easy to be contaminated by Penicillium,which leads to a decrease in its quality and yield.Penicillium could compete for limited space and nutrients through rapid growth and produce a variety of harmful gases,such as benzene,aldehydes,phenols,etc.,to inhibit the growth of H.marmoreus mycelium.A series of changes occurred in H.marmoreus proteome after contamination when detected by the label-free tandem mass spectrometry(MS/MS)technique.Some proteins with up-regulated expression worked together to participate in some processes,such as the non-toxic transformation of harmful gases,glutathione metabolism,histone modification,nucleotide excision repair,clearing misfolded proteins,and synthesizing glutamine,which were mainly used in response to biological stress.The proteins with down-regulated expression are mainly related to the processes of ribosome function,protein processing,spliceosome,carbon metabolism,glycolysis,and gluconeogenesis.The reduction in the function of these proteins affected the production of the cell components,which might be an adjustment to adapt to growth retardation.This study further enhanced the understanding of the biological stress response and the growth restriction Adaptation mechanisms in edible fungi.It also provided a theoretical basis for protein function exploration and edible mushroom food safety research.

Role of Adaptation measures in addressing heatwave exposure in China

Heatwave exposure has increased dramatically because of climate warming and population growth,along with their interactive effects.However,effective Adaptation measures can reduce these impacts.Nonetheless,the dynamic changes,regional inequality in adaptive capacity and their potential contributions to reducing exposure in the future remain unclear.This study quantifies the impact of adaptive capacity and underscores regional variations in heatwave magnitudes,population exposure and Adaptation levels in China.We projected the future adaptive capacity using air-conditioner penetration,factoring in climate cooling requirements and individuals'purchasing power.Utilising population and gross domestic product(GDP)data from four Shared Socioeconomic Pathways(SSP1,SSP2,SSP3 and SSP5)and daily temperature data from four SSP-based emission scenarios(SSP1-2.6,SSP2-4.5,SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5),we estimated heatwave duration,population exposure and avoided impacts through Adaptation across China and its sub-regions.Results show a substantial increase in heatwave duration in Southwest and Southern China,especially under the SSP5-8.5 scenario,with a projection of 163.2±36.7 d during 2081-2100.Under the SSP3|SSP3-7.0 scenario,total exposure reaches 156.4±76.8 billion person d per year,which is the highest among all scenarios and 23 times greater than that in 1986-2005 without Adaptation.Upon considering Adaptation measures,a noteworthy reduction in population exposure is observed,especially in the SSP3|SSP3-7.0 and SSP5JSSP5-8.5 scenarios,with reductions of(62.6±3.9)%and(65.8±5.1)%,respectively,compared with the scenario without Adaptation during 2081-2100.Remarkable regional disparities in avoided impacts are also evident,with variations of up to 50%across different regions.The implementation of effective and environmentally friendly Adaptation measures can notably address climate change,thereby alleviating the profound threats posed to human well-being.

Chromosome-scale genomes of Quercus sichourensis and Quercus rex provide insights into the evolution and Adaptation of Fagaceae

The Fagaceae,a plant family with a wide distribution and diverse adaptability,has garnered significant interest as a subject of study in plant speciation and Adaptation.Meanwhile,certain Fagaceae species are regarded as highly valuable wood resources due to the exceptional quality of their wood.In this study,we present two high-quality,chromosome-scale genome sequences for Quercus sichourensis(848.75 Mb)and Quercus rex(883.46 Mb).Comparative genomics analysis reveals that the difference in the number of plant disease resistance genes and the nonsynonymous and synonymous substitution ratio(Ka/Ks)of protein-coding genes among Fagaceae species are related to different environmental Adaptations.Interestingly,most genes related to starch synthesis in the investigated Quercoideae species are located on a single chromosome,as compared to the outgroup species,Fagus sylvatica.Furthermore,resequencing and population analysis of Q.sichourensis and Q.rex reveal that Q.sichourensis has lower genetic diversity and higher deleterious mutations compared to Q.rex.The high-quality,chromosome-level genomes and the population genomic analysis of the critically endangered Q.sichourensis and Q.rex will provide an invaluable resource as well as insights for future study in these two species,even the genus Quercus,to facilitate their conservation.

Mountains are rich in biodiversity,and butterflies are species-rich and have a good ecological and evolutionary research foundation.This review addresses the potential and progress of studying mountain biodiversity using butterflies as a model.We discuss the uniqueness of mountain ecosystems,factors influencing the distribution of mountain butterflies,representative genetic and evolutionary models in butterfly research,and evolutionary studies of mountain biodiversity involving butterfly genetics and genomics.Finally,we demonstrate the necessity of studying mountain butterflies and propose future perspectives.This review provides insights for studying the biodiversity of mountain butterflies as well as a summary of research methods for reference.

The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau significantly altered the geomorphology and climate of the Euroasia by creating large mountains and rivers.Fishes are more likely to be affected relative to other organisms,as they are largely restricted to river systems.Faced with the rapidly flowing water in the Tibetan Plateau,a group of catfish has evolved greatly enlarged pectoral fins with more numbers of fin-rays to form an adhesive apparatus.However,the genetic basis of these Adaptations in Tibetan catfishes remains elusive.In this study,we performed comparative genomic analyses based on the chromosome-level genome of Glyptosternum maculatum in family Sisoridae and detected some proteins with conspicuously high evolutionary rates in particular in genes involved in skeleton development,energy metabolism,and hypoxia response.We found that the hoxd12a gene evolved faster and a loss-of-function assay of hoxd12a supports a potential role for this gene in shaping the enlarged fins of these Tibetan catfishes.Other genes with amino acid replacements and signatures of positive selection included proteins involved in low temperature(TRMU)and hypoxia(VHL)responses.Functional assays reveal that the G.maculatum TRMU allele generates more mitochondrial ATP than the ancestral allele found in low-altitude fishes.Functional assays of VHL alleles suggest that the G.maculatum allele has lower transactivation activity than the low-altitude forms.These findings provide a window into the genomic underpinnings of physiological Adaptations that permit G.maculatum to survive in the harsh environment of the Tibetan Himalayas that mirror those that are convergently found in other vertebrates such as humans.
