OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of decoction prepared with Yang-activating and stasis-eliminating medicinals from Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) on the intestinal mucosal permeability in rats with ulcerative colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium(DSS).METHODS: Totally 55 male Wistar rats(body weight of 170-190 g) were randomly divided into the blank group(n = 10) and the model duplication group(n = 45). The blank group was not intervened, while the other was modeled with 5% dextran sulfate sodium by gavaging in a dosage of4 m L per day to induce ulcerative colitis, a total of7 days. Then, the model rats were divided into model blank group, mesalazine group and TCM group,and each group was consisted of 15 rats. They were given retention enema 10 min with normal saline,mesalazine enema(0.036 g/m L), and Yang-activating and stasis-eliminating decoction [0.54 g/m L of a decoction boiled by Puhuang(Pollen Typhae), Xiebai(Bulbus Allii Macrostemonis) and Wulingzhi(Faeces Trogopteri)] for 10 days respectively. Afterwards,all of the rats were evaluated by disease activity index(DAI), histological changes of distal colon, expression of occludin protein and ultrastructure of intestinal epithelial cells. Furthermore, ratio of lactulose to mannitol(L/M) discharged in urine was ***: Comparing the results between TCM and model control groups, scores of DAI and histological lesions decreased significantly(P = 0.000 0.05).CONCLUSION: The decoction prepared with Yang-activating and stasis-eliminating TCM medicianls can restore intestinal mucosal epithelial cells and tight junctions the model rats with ulcerative colitis; it can redu

OBJECTIVE:To investigate how community residents in Beijing understood and used Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) in their medical ***:This was a cross-sectional study conducted on 3410 community residents from four large communities of Tongzhou district in Beijng,China.A validated, self-administered questionnaire comprised of three sections was used to gather the data.A systematic sampling procedure was applied to recruit the community ***:A total of 3410 participants completed the questionnaire *** showed that in highly educated residents, 33.4%(170) knew of the names of 3-10 Chinese herbals, 35.8%(182) knew of names of 3-10 traditional Chinese patent *** all the respondent residents, 80.7%(2753)believed that TCM herbal therapy and TCM non-drug treatments were effective in disease treatment, health enhancement, 85.7%(2923) had taken traditional Chinese patent drug in their life,56.8%(1937) of residents had used herbal decoction, 40.0%(1365) had received non-drug treatment of TCM, such as acupuncture, massage, cupping, auricular *** the elderly residents, 11.4%(98) often used Chinese patent drug and 9.8%(85) often used herbal *** addition, 70.8%(2415) of residents were willing to accept knowledge and information on TCM for health enhancement and disease prevention, such as medicated diet, medicinal tea, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, although 82.8%(2825) of residents had never used ***:Chinese patent drug and herbal decoction are widely used in the communities in Beijing, and there existed a possible close correlation between high educational level and better understanding of *** and occupation also correlated with the attitude to TCM *** characteristics of the residents should be considered seriously in the course of promoting the understanding and application of TCM.

Observation on the Effect of Acupoint Injection plus Massage Therapy on Primary Dysmenorrhea

Objective: To observe the clinical effects of acupoint injection therapy plus massage on primary dysmenorrhea(PD). Methods: Ninety patients with PD were randomly divided into a treatment group or a control group, 45 cases in each group. The treatment group was treated by injection of Vitamin K3 into Sanyinjiao(SP 6) plus massage on Diji(SP 8). The control group was treated by oral administration of Ibuprofen sustained-release capsule. Before and after the treatment, visual analogue scale(VAS) was adopted to assess pain degree of the patients. The therapeutic effects were observed after continuous treatment of three cycles of menstruation. Results: After treatment, VAS scores were obviously decreased in both groups and the differences were statistically significant(all P<0.05). The difference in VAS score after treatment was more significant in the treatment group than that in the control group(P<0.01). The total effective rate was significantl higher in the treatment group than that in the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion: Acupoint injection therapy plus massage for PD is effective and better than simple oral administration of Ibuprofen sustained-release capsule.

Case History Ms Li, a staff member aged 18 years, was hospitalized on May 8, 1987. Case number: 42514. Chief complaint: The patient was hospitalized into the Department of Hematology of the Hospital due to general weakness over 10 months, which was exacerbated and accompanied by palpitation and short breath in recent 15 days. Once ten month ago when doing housework, the patient suddenly fell into unconsciousness, but came to in 15 minutes without any treatment. Since then, she had got general weakness accompanied by spontaneous perspiration and liability to cold. In recent 15 days, the patient suffered from exacerbated general weakness accompanied with palpitation worsened upon movement, sore-throat, pale complexion, lips and finger-nails, and anorexia. So she came to this hospital for treatment.

Experience in Differentiation and Treatment of Stubborn Insomnia

Treatment of Aplastic Anemia by the Kidney-Tonifying and Mediating Method

In this series of 65 cases of aplastic anemia, 26 cases were treated by the kidney-tonifying and mediating method, 19 cases by western drugs, and the remaining 20 cases only by tonifying the kidney as controls. The results showed that the kidney-tonifying and mediating method was significantly superior in the total effective rate to the method of western drugs and that of tonifying the kidney alone (P<0.01), and it was also superior in the improvement of symptoms, myelogram, and peripheral blood count to the other two methods.
