Distribution of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances in blood,serum,and urine of patients with liver cancer and associations with liver function biomarkers

Studies have shown that per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances(PFASs)may be hepatotoxic in animals or humans.However,data on clinical epidemiology are very limited.In this study,21PFASs were determined in patients with liver diseases,with the highest median concentrations detected in the serum sample(26.7 ng/mL),followed by blood(10.7 ng/mL)and urine(5.02 ng/mL).Higher total PFAS concentrations were found in hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)patients compared to non-HCC patients,with significant discrepancies in serum and blood samples.Besides,significant correlations were also found among PFAS concentrations and age,gender,body mass index(BMI),and liver function biomarkers levels.For example,PFAS concentrations are significantly higher in males than in females;Several serum PFASs concentrations increase with age and BMI,while the serum perfluorohexane sulfonic acid(PFHxS)concentrations are negatively correlated with age.In addition,multiple regression models adjusted for age,gender and BMI found that increased serum perfluorobutane sulfonic acid(PFBS),perfluoroheptane sulfonic acid(PFHpS)and perfluorohexylphosphonic acid(PFHxPA)conentrations are correlated with elevated alkaline phosphatase(ALP),aspartate aminotransferase(AST),and alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)(p<0.05).Our results provide epidemiological support for the future study on the potential clinical hepatotoxicity of PFAS.

Reactive oxygen species(ROS)are produced as undesirable by-products of metabolism in various cellular compartments,especially in response to unfavorable environmental conditions,throughout the life cycle of plants.Stressinduced ROS production disrupts normal cellular function and leads to oxidative damage.To cope with excessive ROS,plants are equipped with a sophisticated antioxidative defense system consisting of enzymatic and non-enzymatic components that scavenge ROS or inhibit their harmful effects on biomolecules.Nonetheless,when maintained at relatively low levels,ROS act as signaling molecules that regulate plant growth,development,and adaptation to adverse conditions.Here,we provide an overview of current approaches for detecting ROS.We also discuss recent advances in understanding ROS signaling,ROS metabolism,and the roles of ROS in plant growth and responses to various abiotic stresses.

Silver(Ag)paste is widely used in semiconductor metallization,especially in silicon solar cells.Ag powder is the material with the highest proportion in Ag paste.The morphology and structure of Ag powder are crucial which determine its characteristics,especially for the sintering activity.In this work,a simple method was developed to synthesize a type of microcrystalline spherical Ag particles(SP-A)with internal pores and the structural changes and sintering behavior were thoroughly studied by combining ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering(USAXS),small-angle X-ray scattering(SAXS),in-situ heating X-ray diffraction(XRD),focused ion beam(FIB),and thermal analysis measurement.Due to the unique internal pores,the grain size of SP-A is smaller,and the coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE)is higher than that of traditional solid Ag particles.As a result,the sintering activity of SP-A is excellent,which can form a denser sintered body and form silver nanoparticles at the Ag–Si interface to improve silver silicon contact.Polycrystalline silicon solar cell built with SP-A obtained a low series resistance(Rs)and a high photoelectric conversion efficiency(PCE)of 19.26%.These fill a gap in Ag particle structure research,which is significant for the development of high-performance electronic Ag particles and efficient semiconductor devices.

Breast cancer metastasis is responsible for most breast cancer-related deaths and is influenced by many factors within the tumor ecosystem,including tumor cells and microenvironment.Breast cancer stem cells(BCSCs)constitute a small population of cancer cells with unique characteristics,including their capacity for self-renewal and differentiation.Studies have shown that BCSCs not only drive tumorigenesis but also play a crucial role in promoting metastasis in breast cancer.The tumor microenvironment(TME),composed of stromal cells,immune cells,blood vessel cells,fibroblasts,and microbes in proximity to cancer cells,is increasingly recognized for its crosstalk with BCSCs and role in BCSC survival,growth,and dissemination,thereby influencing metastatic ability.Hence,a thorough understanding of BCSCs and the TME is critical for unraveling the mechanisms underlying breast cancer metastasis.In this review,we summarize current knowledge on the roles of BCSCs and the TME in breast cancer metastasis,as well as the underlying regulatory mechanisms.Furthermore,we provide an overview of relevant mouse models used to study breast cancer metastasis,as well as treatment strategies and clinical trials addressing BCSC-TME interactions during metastasis.Overall,this study provides valuable insights for the development of effective therapeutic strategies to reduce breast cancer metastasis.

Isoscaling properties for neutron-rich fragments in highly asymmetric heavy ion collision systems

Traditionally,isoscaling has been interpreted and applied within the framework of the grand canonical ensemble,based on the assumption that fragment production occurs following the attainment of a statistical equilibrium state.However,the influence of the symmetry energy can lead to differences in the neutron and density distribution in neutron-rich nuclei.This in turn may impact the iso scaling parameters(usually denoted byαandβ).We examine the isoscaling properties for neutron-rich fragments produced in highly asymmetric systems on inverse kinematics,namely^(40,48)Ca and58,64Ni+^(9)Be at 140 MeV per nucleon.We evaluate α and β values and sort them as a function of the neutron excess I≡N-Z.The significant differences in a extracted from fragments within different ranges of I emphasize the importance of understanding the dependence of isoscaling parameters on fragments generated in various collision regions.Furthermore,the|β(N)|/α(Z)value for a specific fragment in small size and highly iso spin asymmetry systems can serve as a probe to detect the variations in neutron density and proton density in different regions of the nucleus and indicate the limitations of theoretical models in investigating these issues.

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is often associated with permanent cerebral palsy,neurosensory impairments,and cognitive deficits,and there is no effective treatment for complications related to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.The therapeutic potential of human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells for various diseases has been explored.However,the potential use of human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy has not yet been investigated.In this study,we injected human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells into the lateral ventricle of a neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy rat model and observed significant improvements in both cognitive and motor function.Protein chip analysis showed that interleukin-3 expression was significantly elevated in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy model rats.Following transplantation of human placental chorionic plate-derived mesenchymal stem cells,interleukin-3 expression was downregulated.To further investigate the role of interleukin-3 in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy,we established an in vitro SH-SY5Y cell model of hypoxic-ischemic injury through oxygen-glucose deprivation and silenced interleukin-3 expression using small interfering RNA.We found that the activity and proliferation of SH-SY5Y cells subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation were further suppressed by interleukin-3 knockdown.Furthermore,interleukin-3 knockout exacerbated neuronal damage and cognitive and motor function impairment in rat models of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.The findings suggest that transplantation of hpcMSCs ameliorated behavioral impairments in a rat model of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy,and this effect was mediated by interleukin-3-dependent neurological function.

Efficacy of scraping therapy on blood pressure and sleep quality in stage Ⅰ and Ⅱ essential hypertension: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Background Scraping therapy is widely used in treating stage I and II essential hypertension in China.However,there has been no systematic evaluation of the efficacy of scraping therapy on blood pressure and sleep quality in stage I and II essential hypertension.Search strategy Seven electronic databases(PubMed,Scopus,Cochrane Library,Web of Science,EBSCO,China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Data electronic databases)were searched from inception to December 2022.Based on the principle of combining subject words with text words,the search strategy was constructed around search terms for“scraping therapy,”“scraping,”“Guasha,”“Gua sha,”“hypertension,”and“high blood pressure”during the database searches.Inclusion criteria Randomized controlled trials(RCTs)were included if they recruited patients with stage I and II essential hypertension and included a scraping therapy intervention.The intervention group received antihypertensive drugs and scraping therapy,while the control group only took antihypertensive drugs.Data extraction and analysis Review Manager 5.4.0 and STATA 15.1 were used to enter all the relevant outcome variables to conduct the meta-analysis.The quality of the selected RCTs was assessed using the PEDro scale.The sensitivity analysis was carried out by iteratively excluding individual studies and repeating the analysis to determine the stability of the findings and identify any studies with greater influence on the outcome.Subgroup analysis was performed to find the source of heterogeneity.Funnel plots were used to evaluate the publication bias of included studies.Results Nine RCTs including 765 participants were selected.Meta-analysis showed that scraping therapy combined with medication had an advantage over the use of medication alone in lowering systolic blood pressure(mean difference[MD]=?5.09,95%confidence interval[CI]=?6.50 to?3.67,P<0.001)and diastolic blood pressure(MD=?2.66,95%CI=?3.17 to?2.14,P<0.001).Subgroup analysis showed that scraping therapy improved sleep quality in mid

Topological magnetoelectric response in ferromagnetic axion insulators

The topological magnetoelectric effect （TME） is a hallmark response of the topological field theory,which provides a paradigm shift in the study of emergent topological phenomena.However,its direct observation is yet to be realized due to the demanding magnetic configuration required to gap all surface states.Here,we theoretically propose that axion insulators with a simple ferromagnetic configuration,such as the MnBi2Te4/（Bi2Te3）nfamily,provide an ideal playground to realize the TME.In the designed triangular prism geometry,all the surface states are magnetically gapped.Under a vertical electric field,the surface Hall currents give rise to a nearly half-quantized orbital moment,accompanied by a gapless chiral hinge mode circulating in parallel.Thus,the orbital magnetization from the two topological origins can be easily distinguished by reversing the electric field.Our work paves the way for direct observation of the TME in realistic axion-insulator materials.

Oxidative stress-initiated one-carbon metabolism drives the generation of interleukin-10-producing B cells to resolve pneumonia

The metabolic reprogramming underlying the generation of regulatory B cells during infectious diseases remains unknown.Using a Pseudomonas aeruginosa-induced pneumonia model,we reported that IL-10-producing B cells(IL-10+B cells)play a key role in spontaneously resolving infection-mediated inflammation.Accumulated cytosolic reactive oxygen species(ROS)during inflammation were shown to drive IL-10+B-cell generation by remodeling one-carbon metabolism.Depletion of the enzyme serine hydroxymethyltransferase 1(Shmt1)led to inadequate one-carbon metabolism and decreased IL-10+B-cell production.Furthermore,increased one-carbon flux elevated the levels of the methyl donor S-adenosylmethionine(SAM),altering histone H3 lysine 4 methylation(H3K4me)at the Il10 gene to promote chromatin accessibility and upregulate Il10 expression in B cells.Therefore,the one-carbon metabolism-associated compound ethacrynic acid(EA)was screened and found to potentially treat infectious pneumonia by boosting IL-10+B-cell generation.Overall,these findings reveal that ROS serve as modulators to resolve inflammation by reprogramming one-carbon metabolism pathways in B cells.

PdCu alloy anchored defective titania for photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into methane with 100% selectivity

The photoreduction of CO_(2)into CH_(4)with simultaneous high activity and selectivity is a promising strategy to increase energy supply and alleviate global warming.However,the absence of the active sites that is responsible for the adsorption and activation of CO_(2)and the generation of CO and H2via side reactions often lead to poor efficiency and low selectivity of the catalyst.Herein,Cu,Pd,and PdCu metal clusters cocatalyst-anchored defective TiO_(2)nanotubes(Cu/TiO_(2)-SBO,Pd/TiO_(2)-SBO,and Pd1Cu1/TiO_(2)-SBO)were designed via a simple solution impregnation reduction and applied for photocatalytic conversion of CO_(2)to CH_(4).The Pd1Cu1/TiO_(2)-SBO photocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance among the other catalysts for photoreduction of CO_(2)into CH_(4).More interestingly,the product selectivity of CH_(4)reaches up to 100%with a rate of 25μmol g^(-1)h^(-1).In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy(DRIFTS)and density functional theory(DFT)simulations indicate that the main reasons for the high selectivity of CH_(4)are attributed to the PdCu alloy and oxygen vacancies,which jointly enhance the photoinduced carrier separation and lower energy barriers of key intermediates.Moreover,due to the tunable d-band center of the Cu site in the PdCu alloy,the generated intermediates can be well prevented from poisoning and promoted to participate in further reactions.Hopefully,the current study will provide insight into the development of new,highly selective photocatalysts for the visible light-catalytic reduction of CO_(2)into CH_(4).
