Limited proteomic response in the marine snail Melarhaphe neritoides after long-term emersion

Rocky intertidal organisms are commonly exposed to environmental gradients, promoting adapta-tions to these conditions. Emersion time varies along the intertidal range and in the supralittoralzone is frequently larger than a single tidal cycle, even lasting for weeks. The planktonic-dispersinggastropod Melarhaphe neritoides is a common species of the high shore, adapted to reduce waterloss in order to survive during long-term emersion. In this study, we investigated the molecular re-sponse, at the proteome level, of M. neritoides collected in high-shore tide pools to a series ofemersion periods, from 8 to 24 days, in laboratory conditions. We compared this response to indi-viduals maintained submerged during this period, because this was their original habitat. We alsoincluded a reversion treatment in the study, in which emersed individuals were returned to the sub-merged conditions. Although we detected an increase in overall protein concentration with longeremersion periods, contrary to general expectation, the two dimensional electrophoresis （2de）-based proteomic analysis did not show significant differences between the treatments at the levelof individual protein spots, even after an emersion period of 24 days. Our results suggest that themetabolism remains unaltered independent of the treatment carried out or the changes are verysubtle and therefore difficult to detect with our experimental design. We conclude that M. neri-toides could be equally adapted to emersion and submersion without drastic physiologicalchanges.

Can sexual selection and disassortative mating contribute to the maintenance of a shell color polymorphism in an inter- tidal marine snail？

Littorina fabalis is an intertidal snail commonly living on the brown algae Fucus vesiculosus and showing frequent shell-color polymorphisms in the wild. The evolutionary mechanism underlying this polymorphism is currently unknown. Shell color variation was studied in mated and non-mated specimens of this species from different microareas in one locality from NW Spain, in order to estimate sexual selection and assortative mating that may （still） be operating in this population. The analyses across microareas allowed us to investigate frequency-dependent selection and assortative mating components, mechanisms that could maintain the polymorphism. The presence of shell scars caused by crab attacks, an environmental variable not related with sexual selection or assortative mating, was used as experimental control. This study provides new evidence of significant disas- sortative mating and some degree of sexual selection against some shell colors, supporting the results found 21 years ago in a similar study, i.e. in the same species and locality. The similarity of these estimates during the studied period suggests that this experimental approach is consistent and valid to be extended to other populations and organisms. In addition, sexual selection and assortative mating estimates did not change across microareas differing in shell color frequencies, suggesting than the polymor- phism can not be maintained by a frequency-dependent （sexual selection-based） mechanism. Our main hypothesis is that negative assortative mating could contribute to the maintenance of the polymorphism, perhaps by males showing distinct female color preferences when searching for mates [Current Zoology 58 （3）： 463-474, 2012].

Taxonomy-based differences in feeding guilds of fish

It has been taken for granted that feeding guilds and behavior in animals are linked to the taxonomic relatedness of species,but empirical evidence supporting such relationship is virtually *** examine the importance of taxonomy on trophic ecology,I here present the first well-resolved dietary taxonomy analysis based on feeding guilds(predation,herbivory,and filtering)among families and genera within the fish order *** relatedness in feeding did not vary with ecosystem dimension(marine ***).Although predation dominates among Perciformes fishes,this study shows that in most cases taxonomic units(family or genus)are composed by species with several feeding *** species are more similar in feeding compared with species that are taxonomically more distant demonstrating that there is a greater variation of feeding guilds within families than ***,there is no consistency in feeding guilds between family-and genus-level *** study provides empirical support for the notion that genera are more informative than families,underlining that family-level taxonomy should be avoided to infer feeding habits of fish species at finer taxonomic ***,the choice of taxonomic resolution(family or genus level)in ecological studies is key to avoid information loss and misleading results.I conclude that high-rank taxonomic units(i.e.,above the generic level)are not appropriate to test research hypotheses about the feeding of fish.

In mammals, spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating event that can lead to a permanent loss of motor, sensory and autonomic functions below the site of injury. In the last years, the role of different neurotransmitter systems on regeneration and recovery from SCI has been deciphered. For example, studies in lampreys have shown that neurotransmitters play a key role in modulating the survival and regeneration of brainstem descending neurons after SCI (Romaus-Sanjurjo et al., 2018;Sobrido-Camean et al., 2018).

Direct and cross-generational effects of reproduction on fitness and behavioral variability in male-biased environments

Population structure determines individuals’interactions and trade-offs with evolutionary ***-biased populations increase intrasexual competition and intersexual harassment,reducing female resource acquisition,and thus,resources availability for the following *** analyzed direct and cross-generational effects of male harassment in two generations of damselflies(Odonata).We exposed adult females to treatments with different sex-ratio and density(balanced and male-biased)to modify the male harassment *** analyzed female fecundity,fertility,and number of faecal deposits as an indirect measure of resources *** studied female flight performance after repeated exposures to *** analyzed survivorship,development,exploration,thigmotaxis,and feeding latency of larvae produced by the experimental *** both generations,we analyzed four metrics of behavior:mean value,interindividual differences in plasticity,intra-individual unpredictability,and *** duration increased in male-biased treatment,whereas female resources acquisition and fertility *** that mated longer showed higher fecundity when they were exposed to balanced treatment,but not if they were exposed to male-biased *** from the male-biased treatment showed interindividual differences in plasticity and no repeatability in flight *** showed balanced sex-ratio and similar survivorship,development,and feeding latency independently of the parental treatment;however,females exposed to male-biased treatment produced offspring with higher differences in exploration plasticity and daughters less explorative and with higher unpredictable *** propose prolonged copulation as courtship at balanced sex-ratio but a cost to females under male-biased ***-generational effects in behavioral variability may be a mechanism to cope with predicted future environments.

“The red cage”:implementation of pH-responsiveness within a macrobicyclic pyridinium-based molecular host

We present herein the implementation of pH-responsiveness into a new polycationic macrobicyclic structure,namely what we have termed the“red cage”.The hydrolytically-stable cryptand-like compound has been prepared in a relatively high yield in aqueous media by a kinetically-controlled hydrazone-exchange reaction,promoted by the unusual high stability of the new hydrazone CvN bonds *** organic media the macrobicycle was found not able to complex model aromatic *** buffered aqueous solutions,as a comparison,the“red cage”was found able to recognize them,but the binding was observed to be more efficient in acidic form of the cyclophane compared with its conjugate base.

Environmental Fate of Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Soil:Review of Multiphase Transport,Mass Transfer,and Natural Attenuation Processes

The increasing use of petroleum-derived fuels over the last few decades has subsequently augmented the risk of spills in the environment. Soil pollution with petroleum hydrocarbons(principally caused by leaks in pipelines and underground storage tanks) is one of the major sources of soil degradation. Once in soil, fuel hydrocarbons suffer from a wide variety of multiphase processes including transport(advection, diffusion, and dispersion) among and within phases(aqueous and non-aqueous liquid, gas, and soil solids), mass transfer among phases(volatilization, sorption, and solution), and other natural attenuation processes, such as biodegradation and plant uptake and metabolism. This review identifies and describes the major processes occurring in soil that have a significant influence on the environmental fate of petroleum hydrocarbons. The definition of the processes involved in pollutant migration and distribution in soil and the formulation of adequate equations using accurate parameters(e.g., diffusion coefficients, velocity of advective flows, and mass transfer coefficients) will allow prediction of the final fate of soil pollutants. In addition to transport and mass transfer processes,which are more widely studied, the incorporation of attenuation mechanisms driven by microorganisms and plants is essential to predict the final concentration of the pollutants in the whole multiphase scenario. This work underlines the importance of the determination of accurate parameters through the performance of laboratory and/or field-scale experiments to develop precise pollutant migration models.
