Diurnal and seasonal variations in carbon fluxes in bamboo forests during the growing season in zhejiang province, China

Bamboo forest is an important forest type in subtropical China and is characterized by fast growth and high carbon sequestration capacity. However, the dynamics of carbon fluxes during the fast growing period of bamboo shoots and their correlation with environment factors are poorly understood. We measured carbon dioxide exchange and climate variables using open-path eddy covariance methods during the 2011 growing season in a Moso bamboo forest(MB, Phyllostchys edulis) and a Lei bamboo forest(LB, Phyllostachys violascens) in zhejiang province,China. The bamboo forests were carbon sinks during the growing season. The minimum diurnal net ecosystem exchange(NEE) at MB and LB sites were-0.64 and-0.66 mg C m^(-2) s^(-1), respectively. The minimum monthly NEE, ecosystem respiration(RE), and gross ecosystem exchange(GEE) were-99.3 ± 4.03, 76.2 ±2.46, and^(-1)91.5 ± 4.98 g C m^(-2) month^(-1), respectively,at MB site, compared with-31.8 ± 3.44, 70.4 ± 1.41,and^(-1)57.9 ± 4.86 g C m^(-2) month^(-1), respectively, at LB site. Maximum RE was 92.1 ± 1.32 g C m^(-2) month^(-1) at MB site and 151.0 ± 2.38 g C m^(-2) month^(-1) at LB *** control factors varied by month during the growing season, but across the whole growing season, NEE and GEE at both sites showed similar trends in sensitivities to photosynthetic active radiation and vapor pressure deficit,and air temperature had the strongest correlation with RE at both sites. Carbon fluxes at LB site were more sensitive to soil water content compared to those at MB site. Both onyear(years when many new shoots are produced) and offyear(years when none or few new shoots are produced)should be studied in bamboo forests to better understand their role in global carbon cycling.

Research on Protection Methods of Historic and Cultural Villages in zhejiang province

By the investigation of a few historical and cultural villages in zhejiang province,some problems during the process of protecting these villages were found,like similar construction pattern,coarse quality of construction,etc. which caused that villages were losing their characters. For this situation,the protection method of historical cultural villages was put forward,which was that to connect excavating character of different village with maintaining spatial fabrics of historical villages,and that different classes of building should have corresponding protection approach. Some advices were proposed for repairing and promoting historic and cultural elements,natural environment,and constructing infrastructure in the village,which will provide a reference for the construction of other historical and cultural villages.

Heavy Metals and PAHs in Sewage Sludge from Twelve Wastewater Treatment Plants in zhejiang province

Objective To investigate the heavy metals （HMs） and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs） in sludge of twelve wastewater treatment plants （WWTPs） in zhejiang province of China, and to assess their potential for land application. Methods Sludge was collected from 12 WWTPs within the province. GC-MS and AAS were used to measure PAHs and HMs contents in sludge. Results Concentrations of HMs in most of the sludge samples were below the regulatory limits for the sludge to be used in agriculture in China with the exception of Zn in 2 sludge samples and Cd in 1 sample. All 16 PAHs, targeted by the USEPA agency, were found in the sludge from the twelve plants with a total concentration ranging from 33.73 mg kg^-1 to 82.58 mg kg^-1 （dry weight, d.w.）. The levels of Σ9 PAHs varied from 13.87 mg kg^-1 to 61.86 mg kg^-1 （d.w.） in the sludge, far exceeding the limitation value recommended by the Europe Union. The concentration and composition of PAHs in sewage sludge varied and depended mainly on the quantity and type of industrial wastewater accepted by the WWTPs. A significant relationship between the proportion of industrial wastewater received by WWTPs and the total content of 16 PAHs in the sludge was observed. Conclusion PAHs have become one of the primary pollutants in sludge of zhejiang WWTPs instead of HMs. It is, therefore, essential to reduce the contents of PAHs before the sludge can be used in agriculture through proper treatment.

Background:Quick diagnosis of smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis(TB)and extra-pulmonary TB are urgently needed in clinical *** research aims to investigate the usefulness of the interferon-γrelease assay(IGRA)for the diagnosis of smear-negative pulmonary and extra-pulmonary ***:We performed TB antibody and TB-IGRA tests on 389 pulmonary TB patients(including 120 smear-positive pulmonary TB patients and 269 smear-negative pulmonary TB patients),113 extra-pulmonary TB patients,81 patients with other pulmonary diseases and 100 healthy *** samples for the TB-Ab test and the TB-IGRA were collected,processed,and interpreted according to the manufacturer’s ***:The detection ratio of smear-positive pulmonary TB patients and smear-negative pulmonary TB patients were 90.8%(109 of 120)and 89.6%(241 of 269),*** was no statistically significant difference of its performance between these two sample sets(P>0.05).The detection ratio of positive TB patients and extra-pulmonary TB patients were 90.0%(350 of 389)and 87.6%(99 of 113),respectively,which was not significantly different(P>0.05).Conclusions:In this work,the total detection ratio using TB-IGRA was 89.4%,therefore TB-IGRA has diagnostic values in smear-negative pulmonary TB and extra-pulmonary TB diagnosis.

Prevalence, genetic diversity, and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from bovine mastitis in zhejiang province, China

This study was conducted to determine genetic diversity and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Staphylococcus aureus recovered from bovine mastiffs in zhejiang province, China. Out of 3178 quarter milk samples from 846 lactating cows, among which 459 cows （54.3%） were found HMT positive, 890 quarters （28%） were found having subclinical mastitis. From 75 representative S. aureus isolates, 16 distinct types were identified by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis （PFGE）. Four major PFGE types （A, B, C, and D） accounted for 82.7% of all isolates, and type A （41.3%） was observed in multiple herds across the studied areas. Each region was found to have a predominant type： Hangzhou type A （64.1%）, Ningbo type C （34.5%） and type B （23.1%）, Jinhua type D （53.3%）, and Taizhou type C （62.5%）. Results of antimicrobial susceptibility tests showed that 90.7% of the isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial. Resistance to penicillin and ampicillin （77.3%）, tetracycline （60.0%）, or erythromycin （48.0%） was observed. The bacteria resistant to multiple antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, tetracycline, and erythromycin were commonly found. The information obtained from this study is useful for designing specific control programs for bovine S. aureus mastitis in this region.

Genetic diversity analysis of Hepatacodium miconioides at different altitude in Tiantai Mountain,zhejiang province,China and its relationship with environmental factors

The genetic diversity within and among populations of Hepatacodium miconioides collected at three different altitudes in Tiantai Mountain,zhejiang province and its relationships to environmental factors were analyzed by random amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD)*** using 12 random primers of 60 plants and 122 repetitive loci were *** percentage of polymorphic loci of three populations ranged from 18.85%to 23.77%with an average of 21.86%,indicating the relatively low genetic diversity of *** average Shannon index of phenotypic diversity(0.1329)and Nei index(0.0925)within populations were relatively low.A distinct genetic differentiation existed among populations of *** in spite of the relatively small geographical *** average genetic diversity within populations of *** accounted for 33.58%of the total genetic diversity while the genetic diversity among populations accounted for 66.42%as estimated by the Shannon index of phenotypic diversity,The genetic differentiation among populations of *** was 0.6546,as estimated by Nei *** gene flow estimated from GST was only 0.2656 and it indicated that gene flow among populations of *** was relatively *** mean value of the genetic identity among populations of *** was 0.7126 and the average of genetic distance of *** was *** genetic identity between populations at the elevation of 990 m and at the elevation of 780 m was the *** genetic identity between population at the elevation 500 m and other two populations was relatively *** correlation analysis showed that the genetic diversity within populations was significantly related with the soil total nitrogen.

Effects of Short-Term Forest Bathing on Human Health in a Broad-Leaved Evergreen Forest in zhejiang province,China

Objective To investigate the effects of short-term forest bathing on human health. Methods Twenty healthy male university students participated as subjects and were randomly divided into two groups of 10. One group was sent on a two-night trip to a broad-leaved evergreen forest, and the other was sent to a city area. Serum cytokine levels reflecting inflammatory and stress response, indicators reflecting oxidative stress, the distribution of leukocyte subsets, and plasma endothelin-1 （ET-1） concentrations were measured before and after the experiment to evaluate the positive health effects of forest environments. A profile of mood states （POMS） evaluation was used to assess changes in mood states. Results No significant differences in the baseline values of the indicators were observed between the two groups before the experiment. Subjects exposed to the forest environment showed reduced oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory level, as evidenced by decreased malondialdehyde, interleukin-6, and tumor necrosis factor a levels compared with the urban group. Serum cortisol levels were also lower than in the urban group. Notably, the concentration of plasma ET-1 was much lower in subjects exposed to the forest environment. The POMS evaluation showed that after exposure to the forest environment, subjects had lower scores in the negative subscales, and the score for vigor was increased. Conclusion Forest bathing is beneficial to human health, perhaps through preventive effects related to several pathological factors.

Assessment and mapping of environmental quality in agricultural soils of zhejiang province, China

Heavy metal concentrations in agricultural soils of zhejiang province were monitored to indicate the status of heavy metal contamination and assess environmental quality of agricultural soils. A total of 908 soil samples were collected from 38 counties in Zbejiang province and eight heavy metal （Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Cu, Zn, Ni and As） concentrations had been evaluated in agricultural soil. It was found 775 samples were unpolluted and 133 samples were slightly polluted and more respectively, that is approximately 14.65% agricultural soil samples had the heavy metal concentration above the threshold level in this province by means of Nemerow＇s synthetical pollution index method according to the second grade of Standards for Soil Environmental Quality of China （GB15618- 1995）. Contamination of Cd was the highest, followed by Ni, As and Zn were lower correspondingly. Moreover, Inverse Distance Weighted （IDW） interpolation method was used to make an assessment map of soil environmental quality based on the Nemerow＇s pollution index and the soil environmental quality was categorized into five grades. Moreover, ten indices were calculated as input parameters for principal component analysis （PCA） and the principal components （PCs） were created to compare environmental quality of different soils and regions. The results revealed that environmental quality of tea soils was better than that of paddy soils, vegetable soils and fruit soils. This study indicated that GIS combined with multivariate statistical approaches proved to be effective and powerful tool in the mapping of soil contamination distribution and the assessment of soil environmental quality on provincial scale, which is beneficial to environmental protection and management decision-making by local government.
