Metaverse is a virtual environment where users are represented by their avatars to navigate a virtual world having strong links with its physical *** state-of-the-art Metaverse architectures rely on a cloud-based approach for avatar physics emulation and graphics rendering *** current centralized architecture of such systems is unfavorable as it suffers from several drawbacks caused by the long latency of cloud access,such as low-quality *** this end,we propose a Fog-Edge hybrid computing architecture for Metaverse applications that leverage an edge-enabled distributed computing *** applications leverage edge devices’computing power to perform the required computations for heavy tasks,such as collision detection in the virtual universe and high-computational 3D physics in virtual *** computational costs of a Metaverse entity,such as collision detection or physics emulation,are performed at the device of the associated physical *** validate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture,we simulate a distributed social Metaverse *** simulation results show that the proposed architecture can reduce the latency by 50%when compared with cloud-based Metaverse applications.

Anthropogenic Influence on Decadal Changes in Concurrent Hot and Dry Events over China around the Mid-1990s

The frequency and duration of observed concurrent hot and dry events(HDEs) over China during the growing season(April–September) exhibit significant decadal changes across the mid-1990s. These changes are characterized by increases in HDE frequency and duration over most of China, with relatively large increases over southeastern China(SEC), northern China(NC), and northeastern China(NEC). The frequency of HDEs averaged over China in the present day(PD,1994–2011) is double that in the early period(EP, 1964–81);the duration of HDEs increases by 60%. Climate experiments with the Met Office Unified Model(MetUM-GOML2) are used to estimate the contributions of anthropogenic forcing to HDE decadal changes over China. Anthropogenic forcing changes can explain 60%–70% of the observed decadal changes,suggesting an important anthropogenic influence on HDE changes over China across the mid-1990s. Single-forcing experiments indicate that the increase in greenhouse gas(GHG) concentrations dominates the simulated decadal changes,increasing the frequency and duration of HDEs throughout China. The change in anthropogenic aerosol(AA) emissions significantly decreases the frequency and duration of HDEs over SEC and NC, but the magnitude of the decrease is much smaller than the increase induced by GHGs. The changes in HDEs in response to anthropogenic forcing are mainly due to the response of climatological mean surface air temperatures. The contributions from changes in variability and changes in climatological mean soil moisture and evapotranspiration are relatively small. The physical processes associated with the response of HDEs to GHG and AA changes are also revealed.

Upconversion FRET quantitation:the role of donor photoexcitation mode and compositional architecture on the decay and intensity based responses

Lanthanide-doped colloidal nanoparticles capable of photon upconversion(UC)offer long luminescence lifetimes,narrowband absorption and emission spectra,and efficient anti-Stokes *** features are highly advantageous for F?rster Resonance Energy Transfer(FRET)based *** nanoparticles(UCNPs)as donors may solve the existing problems of molecular FRET systems,such as photobleaching and limitations in quantitative analysis,but these new labels also bring new *** we have studied the impact of the core-shell compositional architecture of upconverting nanoparticle donors and the mode of photoexcitation on the performance of UC-FRET from UCNPs to Rose Bengal(RB)molecular *** have quantitatively compared luminescence rise and decay kinetics of Er3+emission using core-only NaYF4:20%Yb,2%Er and core-shell NaYF4:20%Yb@NaYF4:20%Yb,5%Er donor UCNPs under three photoexcitation schemes:(1)direct short-pulse photoexcitation of Er3+at 520 nm;indirect photoexcitation of Er3+through Yb3+sensitizer with(2)980 nm short(5-7 ns)or(3)980 nm long(4 ms)laser *** donor luminescence kinetics and steady-state emission spectra differed between the UCNP architectures and excitation *** for highly sensitive kinetic upconversion FRET-based biomolecular assays,the experimental results underline the complexity of the excitation and energy-migration mechanisms affecting the Er3+donor responses and suggest ways to optimize the photoexcitation scheme and the architecture of the UCNPs used as luminescent donors.

Spatiotemporal Input Control:Leveraging Temporal Variation in Network Dynamics

The number of available control sources is a limiting factor to many network control tasks.A lack of input sources can result in compromised controllability and/or sub-optimal network performance,as noted in engineering applications such as the smart *** mechanism can be explained by a linear timeinvariant model,where structural controllability sets a lower bound on the number of required *** by the ubiquity of time-varying topologies in the real world,we propose the strategy of spatiotemporal input control to overcome the source-related limit by exploiting temporal variation of the network *** theoretically prove that under this regime,the required number of sources can always be reduced to *** is further shown that the cost of control depends on two hyperparameters,the numbers of sources and intervals,in a trade-off *** a demonstration,we achieve controllability over a complex network resembling the nervous system of Caenorhabditis elegans using as few as 6%of the sources predicted by a static control *** example underlines the potential of utilizing topological variation in complex network control problems.

Spring Inserts for the Intensification of the Heat Exchange Process during Boiling in Vertical Tubes--Optimization of Geometric Parameters

The paper presents new criteria for calculation of heat transfer coefficients and flow resistance during boiling inside vertical tubes with spring inserts, developed on the basis of own experimental research. Calculations of the geometric parameters of the spring insert were carried out using the Nelder-Mead optimization method for various optimization criteria(maximizing the increase ratios for heat transfer coefficient and flow resistance, minimizing entropy, own optimization criterion). The results of optimization calculations were verified by the optimization procedures available in Statistica.

Near-seamless joining of Cf/SiC composites using Y_(3)Si_(2)C_(2)via electric field-assisted sintering technique

A novel Y_(3)Si_(2)C_(2)material was synthesized at a relatively low temperature(900℃)using a molten salt method for the first time,and subsequently used as the joining material for carbon fiber reinforced SiC(Cf/SiC)*** sound near-seamless joints with no obvious remaining interlayer were obtained at 1600℃using an electric field-assisted sintering technique(FAST).During joining,a liquid phase was formed by the eutectic reaction among Y_(3)Si_(2)C_(2),γ(Y–C)phase,and SiC,followed by the precipitation of SiC *** presence of the liquid promoted the sintering of newly formed SiC particles,leading to their complete consolidation with the Cf/SiC *** the other hand,the excess of the liquid was pushed away from the joining area under the effect of a uniaxial pressure of 30 MPa,leading to the formation of the near-seamless *** highest shear strength(Ä)of 17.2±2.9 MPa was obtained after being joined at 1600℃for 10 *** failure of the joints occurred in the Cf/SiC matrix,indicating that the interface was stronger than that of the Cf/SiC *** formation of a near-seamless joint minimizes the mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients and also irradiation-induced swelling,suggesting that the proposed joining strategy can be potentially applied to SiC-based ceramic matrix composites(CMCs)for extreme environmental applications.

The role of tree uprooting in the transporting of sediment and mixing of soil in the Tatra Mountains

Tree uprooting is an important process which leads to many geomorphic *** of the most important are the transport of sediment and mixing of *** aim of this article is to make a detailed examination of the magnitude of sediment transport caused by an extreme windthrow event in three severely affected ***,a comparison is made of the windthrow event with a mass movement event in the aspect of the magnitude of sediment transport and soil *** study was conducted in three second-to third-order catchments in the Tatra Mountains,where a strong foehn wind event caused extensive windthrow in 2013,and a high-magnitude rainfall event triggered mass movements in *** volume of sediment uplifted by the uprooting event was calculated based on the mapping of root plates using high-resolution(0.04 m)aerial images and measurements of root plate volumes conducted in the *** volume of sediment transported by shallow landslides was determined based on a Digital Elevation Model(DEM1-m resolution).Windthrows affected 34%,76%,and94%of the area of the investigated *** of the trees had fallen *** direction of treefall was influenced by the slope aspect and *** plates and pits covered 1.3%,4.8%,and 5.4%of the area of the *** flux generated by the uprooting event,calculated for the entire area of each investigated catchment ranged from 8.1×10^(–4) to 9.9×10^(–3) m^(3) m^(–1) event^(–1).This was notably lower than the sediment flux generated by the mass movement event(also calculated for the entire area of each catchment),which was 1.8-6.1×10^(–2)m^(3) m^(–1) event^(–1).By contrast,uprooting affected a much larger area than the mass movement event,which underlines its significant role in the mixing of soil.
