BACKGROUND： In vitro cultures of neural stem cells have shown that estrogen can regulate beta-amyloid precursor protein （β-APP） metabolism and reduce amyloid-beta production. OBJECTIVE： To investigate the effects of long-term oral administration of compound nylestriol or low-dose 17beta-estradiol on β-APP and mRNA expression in the hippocampus of ovariectomized （OVX） rats. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING： This randomized and controlled experiment was performed at the Animal Laboratory and Laboratory of Endocrine and Metabolic Disease, Xiangya Second Hospital of Central South University between April 2003 and May 2004. MATERIALS： According to body mass, 50 six-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups （n = 10 per group）： normal control, sham operation, OVX model, 17beta-estradiol （Sigma, USA）, and compound nylestriol tablet （Laboratory of Endocrine and Metabolic Disease, Xiangya Second Hospital of Central South University） groups. METHODS： Rats in OVX plus 17beta-estradiol and OVX plus compound nylestriol tablet groups underwent ovariectomy. On the second day after surgery, rats were intragastrically given 17beta-estradiol （100 μg/kg）, once per day or compound nylestriol tablet （0.5 mg/kg） and levonorgestrel （0.15 mg/kg） every 2 days. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： β-APP expression in the hippocampus of OVX rats was determined using immunohistochemistry （SABC method） and β-APP mRNA expression was analyzed by in situ hybridization. The results were quantitatively analyzed using cell counting and average optical density. RESULTS： The number and optical density of β-APP-positive neurons in every subregion of the hippocampus of OVX rats was dramatically increased compared with normal and sham operation groups following 35 weeks of administration （P 〈 0.05）. AIM:To investigate the antioxidant activity of chitooligosaccharides(COSs)on pancreatic islet cells in diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin. METHODS:The antioxidant effect of COSs on pancreatic islet cells was detected under optical microscopy and with colorimetric assay and gel *** activities of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase,total antioxidant capacity,and content of malondialdehyde in serum and tissue slices of pancreas were examined after 60 d to determine the effect of COSs in streptozotocin-induced diabetes in rats. RESULTS:COSs can prohibit the apoptosis of pancreatic islet *** concentrations of COSs can improve the capability of total antioxidant capacity and activity of superoxide dismutase and decrease the content of malondialdehyde *** investigation in the pancreas showed that COSs have resulted in the reduction of islets,loss of pancreatic cells,and nuclear pyknosis of pancreatic cells. CONCLUSION:COSs possess various biological activities and can be used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Background A five-year follow-up study of intensive multifactorial intervention was undertaken to assess the changes of circulating serum amyloid A （SAA） levels and the incidence of atherosclerosis （AS） in patients with short-duration type 2 diabetes mellitus （T2DM） without macroangiopathy, and whether intensive multifactorial intervention could prevent or at least postpone the occurence of macroangiopathy. Methods Among 150 patients with short-duration T2DM, 75 were assigned to receive conventional outpatient treatment （conventional group） and the others underwent intensive multifactorial integrated therapy targeting hyperglycemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia and received aspirin simultaneously （intensive group）. Results Plasma SAA levels were higher in diabetic patients than those in healthy control subjects, and decreased obviously after intensive multifactorial intervention. The levels of SAA were positively correlated with body mass index （BMI）, waist hip ratio （WHR）, triglyceride （TG）, high sensitive C-reactive protein （hs-CRP） and common carotid intima-media thickness （CC-IMT）. The standard-reaching rates of glycemia, blood pressure and lipidemia were significantly higher in intensive group than those of conventional group. The incidence of macroangiopathy decreased by 58.96% in intensive group compared with conventional group. Conclusions Intensive multifactorial intervention may significantly reduce the SAA levels and prevent the occurrence of AS in short-duration patients with T2DM. SAA might be one of the risk factors of T2DM combined with AS.

Heavy Rainfall Associated with a Monsoon Depression in South China:Structure Analysis

A heavy rainfall associated with the deepening of a monsoon depression happened in the summer of 2005. This process was first diagnostically analyzed and the 3D structure of the monsoon depression was discussed~ then this structure was compared with those of the monsoon depression in South Asia and the low vortex in the Meiyu front. The results showed that the heavy rainfall directly resulted from a monsoon depression in South China~ and the large-scale environment provided a favorable background for the deepening of the monsoon depression. The 3D structure of the monsoon depression was as follows. In the horizontal direction, there existed a convective cloud band to the south of the monsoon depression, which lay in a convectively instable area, with a relatively strong ascending motion in the mid and low levels of the troposphere, and the ascending motion matched well with a moist tongue, a convergence area, and a band of positive vorticity in the mid and low levels of the troposphere. In the vertical direction, the depression had an obviously cyclonic circulation in the mid and low levels of the troposphere, but no circulation from above 300 hPa. The monsoon depression corresponded to convergence and positive vorticity in the low levels, but to divergence and negative vorticity in the upper levels. The upward draft of the depression could reach the upper levels of the troposphere in the west of the depression, while the descending motion lay in the east. There was a low-level jet to the south of the depression, while the upper-level jet was not obvious. The depression was vertically warm in the upper levels and cold in the low levels, and the axis of the depression tilted southeastward with height, whose characteristics were different not only from the monsoon depression in South Asia but also from the low vortex in the Meiyu front.

To the optimal control problem of affine nonlinear system, based on differential geometry theory, feedback precise linearization was used. Then starting from the simulative relationship between computational structural mechanics and optimal control, multiple-substructure method was inducted to solve the optimal control problem which was linearized. And finally the solution to the original nonlinear system was found. Compared with the classical linearizational method of Taylor expansion, this one diminishes the abuse of error expansion with the enlargement of used region.

Numerical Simulations of the Transparency of Waterfront Bodies

Measured field data was used to analyze the factors which influence the transparency of the Nei River and to develop a multi-factor correlation for the transparency. A 2-D unsteady model which coupled analyses of the water flow, water quality, suspended sediments, and Chl-a was developed to simulate the changes in the transparency for various conditions. The model was then used to forecast the transparency of the Nei River. The suspended sediment concentration （SSC） was found to be the most important factor influencing the transparency, with high concentrations of CODMn and Chl-a also reducing the transparency to some extent. The transparency model is stable and precise, with relative errors between measured and calculated values of less than 15%. With the environmental scheduling schemes, the Nei River transparency can be significantly improved with a mean transparency in high-water years of 69.3 cm, normal-water years of 70.8 cm, and low-water years of 69.8 cm.

QTL mapping of resistance to sheath blight in maize(Zea mays L.)

The genetic linkage map has been constructed with 125 SSR markers based on BC1:2 population consisting of 322 lines derived from the combination of (CML270×478) ×CML270 in maize (Zea mays L.), covering 1939.0 cM of maize genome. The average mapping distance was about 15.5 cM. Three major QTLs of the relative resistant index of re- sistance to maize sheath blight (Rhizoctonia solani) had been located on chromosomes 1, 7 by composite interval mapping (CIM). 7 QTLs of the plant height have been located on chromosomes 3, 4, 5, 6. five QTLs of ear height have been located on chromosomes 3, 4, 6. The resistance to the sheath blight is shown to be not relative to plant height and ear height genetically. Inbred line CML270 was used for mo- lecular assisted selection and cloning the genes.
