Influence of fly ash fineness and shape on the porosity and permeability of blended cement pastes

The effects of the fineness and shape of fly ash on the porosity and air permeability of cement pastes were investigated. Pulverized coal combustion （PCC） fly ash and fluidized bed coal combustion （FBC） fly ash classified into three different finenesses were used. River sand with particle size distribution similar to that of fly ash was also used for comparison. Portland cement was replaced with fly ash and ground sand at the dosages of 0, 20wt%, and 40wt%. A water-to-binder ratio （w/b） of 0.35 was used throughout the experiment. The results show that the porosity and air permeability of the pastes are influenced by the shape, fineness, and replacement level of fly ash. The porosity and air permeability of FBC fly ash pastes are higher than those of PCC fly ash pastes. This is due to the higher irregular shape and surface of FBC fly ash compared to the spherical shape and relatively smooth surface of PCC fly ash. The porosity increases with the increase in fly ash replacement level and decreases with the increase in its fineness. The permeability of PCC fly ash pastes decreases with the increase in replacement level and fineness, while for FBC fly ash, the permeability increases with the increase in replacement level. Decreases in porosity and permeability are due to a combined effect of the packing of fine particles and the reaction of fly ash.

MnWO4 (huebnerite) with flower-like clusters of nano-plates was produced from the solutions containing MnCl2·4H2O and Na2WO4·2H2O by the 300 ℃ spray pyrolysis. The phase was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and is in accordance with the results characterized using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The flower-like clusters of nano-plates were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM and TEM), and their parallel lattice planes using a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM). Vibration spectra of the huebnerite structured products were characterized using Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers. Their photoluminescence (PL) emissions are in the same spectral region at 405-412 nm.

CdS, CuxS (x=1, 2) and ZnS with different morphologies were produced by the solvothermal reactions of M(CH3COO)2·2H2O (M=Cd, Cu and Zn) and NH2CSNH2 in hexane with and without silica gel as a hard template at 200 ℃ for 24 h. The product phases were detected using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Different morphologies were characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The existence of silica gel in modeling morphologies of the sulfides was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer. Raman spectra of different products show the vibrations at the same wavenumbers, although they are composed of different morphologies. Photoluminescence (PL) emissions of the corresponding phases with different morphologies are at the same values, but their intensities are increased by template adding.

Tapioca is economical crop grown in thailand and continues to be one of the major sources of ***,tapioca starch has been widely used in industrial applications,however the native form of starch has limited the *** scientists try to modify the properties of starch for increasing the stability of the granules,pastes to low pH,heat,and shear during the food *** modify the tapioca starch by plasma treatment under an argon *** degree of modification is determined by following water content in the starch *** tablet samples of native starch are also prepared and compared with the plasma treated *** plasma treatment,the starch tablets are stored under three different relative humilities(RH)including 11%,68%,and 78%RH,*** samples are characterized using FTIR spectroscopy associated with the degree of *** results show that the water molecules are engulfed into the starch structure in two ways,a tight bond and a weak absorption of water molecules which is represented at two wave number of 1630 cm^(-1) and 3272 cm^(-1),*** degree of cross-linking can be identified from the relative intensity of these two peaks with the C–O–H peak at 993 cm^(-1).The results show that the degree of cross-linking increase in the plasma treated *** degree of cross-linking of the treated starch with high relative humidity is less than that of the treated starch with low relative humidity.

The conformational and dynamic properties of polypropylene （PP） for both pure melts and blends with different chain tacticity were investigated by Monte Carlo simulation of isotactic （iPP）, atactic （aPP） and syndiotactic （sPP） polypropylenes. The simulation of coarse-grained PP models was performed on a high coordination lattice incorporating short- and long-range intramolecular interactions from the rotational isomeric state （RIS） model and Lennard-Jones （LJ） potential function of propane pairs, respectively. The dynamics of chains in binary PP/PP mixture were investigated with the composition of C150H302 with different chain taciticity. The diffusion rates of PP with different stereochemistry are generally in the order as： iPP 〉 aPP 〉〉 sPP. For PP/PP blends with 50：50 wt% binary mixtures, immiscibility was observed when sPP was introduced into the mixtures. The diffusion rate of iPP and aPP became slower after mixing, while sPP diffuses significantly faster in the binary mixtures. The mobility of PP chains depends on both intramolecular （molecular size and chain stiffness） and intermolecular （chain packing） interactions. The effect of intramolecular contribution is greater than that of intermolecular contribution for iPP and aPP chains in binary mixtures. For sPP chain, intermolecular interaction has greater influence on the dynamics than intramolecular contribution.

Enhancement of Resistance to Protein Fouling of Poly(ether imide) Membrane by Surface Grafting with PEG under Organic Solvent-free Condition

Poly（ether imide）（PEI） membrane with enhanced antifouling property was successfully prepared in a mild and simple procedure. The virgin membrane was firstly functionalized with an aqueous solution of diamino-terminated poly（ethylene oxide） block copolymer （PEG-diamine）. Glutaraldehyde was used in a second step as a linker to chemically attach additional PEG-diamine to the primary amine groups grafted on PEI membrane surface. Immobilization of PEG segments was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Ultrafiltration experiments revealed that the enhancement of a PEG coverage on the membrane surface provided superior anti-protein-fouling property. Cycles of protein filtration also demonstrated that the antifouling surface was stable over time and excellent ultrafiltration performance could be maintained without the need of harsh cleansing operation.

Effect of cement types, mineral admixtures, and bottom ash on the curing sensitivity of concrete

The curing sensitivity of concrete with cement Types 1, 3, and 5 as well as multiple powders consisting of cement, fly ash, and limestone powder was studied. Bottom ash was also used in the study as an internal curing agent and a partial substi- tution of fine aggregate. The curing sensitivity index was calculated by considering the performances of compressive strength and carbonation depth. Specimens were subjected to two curing conditions： continuously water-cured and continuously air-cured. The results show that cement Type 3 has a lower curing sensitivity, while cement Type 5 increases the curing sensitivity. For the mixes without bottom ash, the use of fly ash increases the curing sensitivity, while limestone powder reduces the curing sen- sRivity of concrete. The use of bottom ash in concrete reduces the curing sensitivity, especially at a lower mass ratio of water to binder. Concrete with limestone powder, together with bottom ash, is least sensitive to curing. The curing sensitivity calculated from carbonation depth also has a similar tendency as that derived by considering compressive strength. From the test results of compressive strength and curing sensitivity, bottom ash has been proven to be an effective internal curing agent.

Objective:To investigate the association between amplification of the two regulatory genes controlling glutathione(GSH) levels,glutathione reductase(PfGR) and glutathione S-transferase (PfGST) genes and sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum(***) isolates collected from different malaria endemic areas of thailand to standard antimalarial ***:A total of 70 *** isolates were collected from endemic areas of multi-drug resistance (Tak,Chantaburi and Ranong Provinces) during the year *** in vitro assessment of antimalarial activity of *** clones(K1- and Dd2 chloroquine resistant and 3D7- chloroquine sensitive) and isolates to chloroquine,quinine,mefloquine and arteusnate was performed based on SYBR Green modified ***:68(97.14%),11(15.71%) and 28(40%) isolates respectively were classified as chloroquine-,quinine- and mefloquine-resistant isolates. With this limited number of *** isolates included in the analysis,no significant association between amplification of PfGST gene and sensitivity of the parasite to chloroquine, quinine,mefloquine and quinine was *** on PCR analysis,Dd2,Kl and 3D7 clones all contained only one copy of the PfGST *** isolates(70) also carried only one copy number of PfGST *** appears to be an association between amplification of PfGR gene and chloroquine *** 3D7 and Dd2 clones were found to carry only one PfGR gene copy, whereas the K1 clone carried two gene ***:Chloroquine resistance is likely to be a consequence of multi-factors and enzymes in the GSH system may be partly involved. Larger number of parasite isolates are required to increase power of the hypothesis testing in order to confirm the involvement of both genes as well as other genes implicated in glutathione metabolism in conferring chloroquine resistance.
