Determinant variables on the isotopic values of particulate organic matter in a neotropical floodplain

Particulate organic matter(PoM)is an important energy source for aquatic consumers,understanding its origin and composition is essential for understanding the energetic dynamics of aquatic *** aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between PoM and phytoplankton(isotopic values and chlorophyll concentration)and abiotic variables during dry and rainy *** was conducted in rivers and lagoons in the floodplain of the Upper Paraná*** found a greater difference in ^(δ13)C values of PoM between sampling points than between seasons,indicating that the composition of regional sources influences the composition of PoM more than dry and rainy *** addition,the concentration of chlorophyll during the dry season was positively correlated with ^(δ13)C values during that rainy ***,we found a relationship between factors limiting the growth of phytoplankton and ^(δ13)C values of PoM,such as phosphate ions,indicating that variables that regulate phytoplankton growth tend to influence the composition of PoM in river ***,maintaining the variables that regulate the phytoplankton community is of fundamental importance for the composition of PoM,an important energy source in aquatic environments.

Toward improving reforestation of Brazilian pine(araucaria angustifolia),two contrasting sapling sizes in either full sun or in the shade of a mixed plantation and the effect of opening the canopy were evaluated for survival,growth,gas exchange,photosynthetic pigments,and leaf anatomy 18 months after being *** 23 months after planting,a partial opening was made in the canopy in the mixed plantation,then the saplings were evaluated again after 2 months for the same morphophysiological *** 18 months,saplings planted in the full sun had higher survival,growth,pigments,and photosynthesis compared to the shaded *** saplings had higher survival and growth compared to the small *** leaves were thinner and little differentiation of palisade parenchyma and *** opening of the canopy,photo synthetically active radiation was 10 times higher,and the saplings quickly grew in height due to increased ***,although the species can tolerate shade,growth in the shade is *** recommend that for reforestation purposes of Brazilian pine,large saplings should be selected and planted in the open for better development.

Effects of lime addition on geotechnical properties of sedimentary soil in Curitiba,Brazil

The soil of the Guabirotuba geological formation（Paraná Basin, Brazil） has physico-mechanical properties which are not suitable for its utilization in pavement construction, in protection of hillsides and slopes, or as shallow foundation support. Treatment of this soil by lime addition would improve its usability. The present context intends to determine the ratio between the splitting tensile strength（q;）and the unconfined compressive strength（q;） of clayey soil in the metropolitan region of Curitiba City,which has been treated with different lime contents and curing times. The control parameters evaluated include lime content（L）, curing time（t）, moisture content（w）, and ratio of porosity to volumetric lime content（η/L;）. It was observed that the q;/q;ratio is between 0.17 and 0.2 in relation to the curing time,and an exponential relation exists between them. Meanwhile, the unconfined compressive strength of lime-treated soil was found to be approximately four times the initial value.

Myenteric neurons and intestinal mucosa of diabetic rats after ascorbic acid supplementation

AIM: To investigate the effect of ascorbic acid (AA) dietary supplementation on myenteric neurons and epithelial cell proliferation of the jejunum of adult rats with chronic diabetes mellitus. METHoDS: Thirty rats at 90 d of age were divided into three groups: Non-diabetic, diabetic and diabetic treated with AA (DA) (1 g/L). After 120 d of treatment with AA the animals were killed. The myenteric neurons were stained for myosin-V and analyzed quantitatively in an area of 11.2 mm2/animal. We further measured the cellular area of 500 neurons per group. We also determined the metaphasic index (MI) of the jejunum mucosa layer of about 2500 cells in the intestinal crypts, as well as the dimensions of 30 villi and 30 crypts/animal. The data area was analyzed using the olympus BX40 microscope. RESULTS: There was an increase of 14% in the neuronal density (792.6 ± 46.52 vs 680.6 ± 30.27) and 4.4% in the cellular area (303.4 ± 5.19 vs 291.1 ± 6.0) respectively of the diabetic group treated with AA when compared to control diabetic animals. There were no signifi cant differences in MI parameters, villi height or crypt depths among the ***: Supplementation with AA in the diabetic animal promoted moderate neuroprotection. There was no observation of alteration of the cellular proliferation of the jejunum mucosa layer of rats with chronic diabetes mellitus with or without supplementation with AA.

Soil Pore Characterization Using Free Software and a Portable optical Microscope

Total porosity （TP）, determined by image analysis, pore type and pore size distribution were evaluated on impregnated soil blocks from an undisturbed Brazilian sandy loam soil using a digital portable optical microscope. The free software Image J （version 1.40g） was used for image analysis. Procedures for soil image collection and analysis were presented. The image analysis allowed the evaluation of pore sizes with diameters ranging from 20 to 〉 1 000 μm. The following types of pores were also obtained： rounded, elongated and intermediate. The results M[owed the characterization of the soil as moderately porous （TP = 21.6%）. Rounded, intermediate and elongated pores were responsible for 11.6%, 31.7% and 56.7% of TP. In relation to pore size 51.1% of TP was in the 100-500μm size class and a third of TP came from the pores larger than 500μm.

Use of ultrasound to modify the pyrolyzed biomass of Pinus *** the implications for biological models

Pine(Pinus ssp.)needle biomass(PNB)was pyrolyzed at 400℃ for 3 h and then subjected to hydrothermal treatment at the same temperature for 10 min,with and without the addition of potassium chloride(KCl).The suspensions of the materials treated hydrothermally were submitted to ultrasound for 5,10,20,30 and 60 *** reflectance UV-Vis(DRUV)spectroscopy results for the materials with variations in sonication times were obtained and the band gap energy(E)was calculated.A culture medium containing Saccharomyces cerevisiae was monitored during 30 min of exposure to different materials for the calculation of the 10%(IC10),30%(IC30)and 50%(IC50)inhibitory *** the samples that underwent ultrasonic treatment,the material pyrolyzed at 400℃ without the addition of potassium ions(PNB4003H60)presented the greatest inhibition of 10% of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae *** the materials without the addition of potassium,the material pyrolyzed and sonicated for 10 min(PNB4003H10)showed the best characteristics for use as a support for Saccharomyces cerevisiae organisms.

In this review,the state of the art in understanding the structural phase relations in perovskite-structured BiFeo_(3)-based polycrystalline solid solutions is presented and *** about the close relation between the structural phase and overall physical properties of the reviewed systems are pointed out and *** is shown that,by adjusting the structural symmetric arrangement,the ferroelectric and magnetic properties of BiFeo_(3)-based polycrystalline solid solutions can be tuned to find specific multifunctional ***,an intrinsic mechanism linking structural arrangement and physical properties cannot be identified,revealing that this subject still deserves further discussion and investigation.

Soil erosion on the Brazilian sugarcane cropping system:An overview

Sugarcane(Saccharum officinarum)is an important crop for generating fiber,biofuel and other *** is the largest sugarcane producer in the world;however,limited knowledge is available with respect to soil erosion in the sugarcane cropping *** study reviews the soil erosion rates in sugarcane cropping and evaluates the effects of soil management and land conversion on soil *** studies(using conventional tillage)reporting 43 outcomes of soil erosion rates were examined using the Scopus®*** methods were used to measure soil erosion yielded different soil loss rates;highest values were recorded in the natural rain method,i.e.,experimental plots with a median of 28 Mg ha^(−1)yr^(−1),were obtained followed by modeling with 9.3 Mg ha^(−1)yr^(−1)and simulated rain with 2 Mg ha^(−1)yr^(−1).The median soil loss using all data(n=43)obtained by the three methods was 7.2 Mg ha^(−1)yr^(−1).The soil type increases soil erosion;the sugarcane cropping system is practiced over the most erodible Brazilian soils(e.g.,Ultisols and oxisols)where sand fraction is dominant,particularly fine *** studies focused on rainsplash and interrill ***,rill,ephemeral and permanent gullies should be examined,particularly in sugarcane-cropping areas.
