The demand for industrial enzymes is continually rising,fueled by the growing need to shift towards more sustainable industrial ***,making efficient enzyme production strains and identifying optimal enzyme expression conditions remains a ***,the production of the enzymes themselves comes with unavoidable impacts,e.g.,the need to utilize secondary ***,we take a more holistic view of bioprocess development and report an integrative approach that allows us to rapidly identify improved enzyme expression and secretion conditions and make use of cyanobacterial waste biomass as feed for supporting Pichia pastoris *** demonstrate these capabilities by producing a phytase secreted by *** that is grown on cyanobacterium hydrolysate and buffered glycerol-complex(BMGY)medium,with genetic expression conditions identified by high-throughput screening of a randomized se-cretion *** our best-performing strain is grown in a fed-batch fermentation on BMGY,we reach over 7000 U/mL in three days.

A physically-based numerical three-dimensional earthen dam piping failure model is developed for homogeneous and zoned soil *** model is an erosion model,coupled with force/moment equilibrium *** flow and two-dimensional(2D)shallow water equations(SWE)are solved to simulate dam break flows at different breaching *** rates of different soils with different construction compaction efforts are calculated using corresponding erosion *** dam's real shape,soil properties,and surrounding area are *** outer 2D-SWE grids are used to control upstream and downstream hydraulic conditions and control the boundary conditions of orifice flow,and inner 2D-SWE flow is used to scour soil and perform force/moment equilibrium *** model is validated using the european commission IMPACT(Investigation of Extreme Flood Processes and Uncertainty)Test#5 in Norway,Teton Dam failure in Idaho,USA,and Quail Creek Dike failure in Utah,*** calculated peak outflows are within 10%errors of observed *** results show that,for a V-shaped dam like Teton Dam,a piping breach location at the abutment tends to result in a smaller peak breach outflow than the piping breach location at the dam's center;and if Teton Dam had broken from its center for internal erosion,a peak outflow of 117851 m'/s,which is 81%larger than the peak outflow of 65120 m3/s released from its right abutment,would have been released from Teton Dam.A lower piping inlet elevation tends to cause a faster/earlier piping breach than a higher piping inlet elevation.

Background:Alcohol and illicit drugs(AID)continue to be a major global health *** preventable,AID is linked to millions of deaths annually *** situation is particularly grave for young people,with AID being a major direct risk factor for disability-adjusted youth life-years lost and *** further contributes to assaults,road crashes,accidental poisoning,and suicide,leading to long-term issues and public health ***:This study aimed at disclosing current AID prevalence data for Argentinian,Bulgarian,Chilean and Romanian *** shed light on the predictors of AID in young people from those ***:The study used an online survey to gather data from people aged 18 to 25(n=1,297).The survey was underpinned by the theory of planned behaviour(TPB).Predictors were investigated separately for drinking alcohol and using illicit ***:Our data revealed that across the four target countries,49%to 90%of the participants drank alcohol,and 8%to 35%used illicit drugs in the past three *** 20%and 91%of them intended to drink,and between 8%and 31%intended to use illicit drugs in the following three *** TPB model predicted statistically significant(P<0.001)amounts of variance in drinking alcohol(between 61%and 72%)and using illicit drugs(between 20.3%and 74.4%).Intention was consistent in significantly predicting both *** around the predictive validity of self-efficacy,age and gender was mixed across the investigated ***:This research provided an update on the scarce AID epidemiological *** also supplied evidence about what theoretically-informed measures might be useful targets of interventions in the case of Argentina,Bulgaria,Chile and *** new knowledge of understanding substance abuse determinants and prevalence may help researchers and practitioners better meet young people's health prevention needs.

Removing high-risk and persistent contaminants from water is challenging,because they typically exist at low concentrations in complex water *** flow-through technologies are viable to overcome the limitations induced by mass transport for efficient contaminant *** the local environment of the flow-through electrodes offers opportunities to further improve the reaction kinetics and selectivity for achieving near-complete removal of these contaminants from ***,we present state-of-the-art local environment modification approaches that can be incorporated into electrified flow-through technologies to intensify water *** first show methods of nanospace incorporation,local geometry adjustment,and microporous structure optimization that can induce spatial confinement,enhanced local electric field,and microperiodic vortex,respectively,for local environment *** then discuss why local environment modification can complement the flow-through electrodes for improving the reaction rate and ***,we outline appropriate scenarios of intensifying electrified flow-through technologies through local environment modification for fit-for-purpose water treatment applications.

Conventional mining of economically and strategically important critical rare earth elements(REEs)(such as neodymium, lanthanum and dysprosium), and chalcogens(such as selenium and tellurium) are associated with a huge economic and environmental cost. Therefore,the need to recover REEs as well as chalcogens from different waste streams including wastewaters is becoming urgent. Batch assays on synthetic chalcogen/REE-laden wastewater showed that the presence of REEs significantly improved the tellurite removal rate(> 80%) and enhanced selenate removal by 66% ± 10%. Three 3.9 L continuous upflow anaerobic granular sludge bed(UASB) reactors were operated at a hydraulic retention time of 24 h and30 °C. Selenate reduction was achieved with a removal efficiency of ～ 98% with an influent p H of 4.0 for more than 28 days. The effect of REEs on tellurite removal in the UASB bioreactor could not be clearly established since a soluble tellurium removal efficiency of more than 98%was observed already before the addition of REEs at elevated tellurite concentrations. The complete REE removal in both batch assays and UASB reactors at higher pH (7.0 ± 0.5) was attributed to precipitation, whereas chalcogen oxyanions removal was due to microbial reduction. However, at acidic p H, biosorption was responsible for REE's removal, and the Se-enriched sludge exhibited a superior REE's removal efficiency than the non-enriched and Te-enriched sludge.

Voluntary soil protection measures are not sufficient to achieve sustainable soil management at a global ***,binding soil protection legislation at national and international levels has also proved to be insufficient for the effective protection of this almost non-renewable natural *** european Soil Partnership(ESP)and its sub-regional partnerships(Eurasian Sub-Regional Soil Partnership,Alpine Soil Partnership)were established in the context of FAO's Global Soil Partnership(GSP)with the mission to facilitate and contribute to the exchange of knowledge and technologies related to soils,to develop dialogue and to raise awareness for the need to establish a binding global agreement for sustainable soil management The ESP has taken a role of an umbrella network covering countries in Europe and Central *** aims to improve the dialogue in the whole region and has encouraged establishing goals that would promote sustainable soil management taking into account various national and local approaches and priorities,as well as cultural *** ESP first regional implementation plan for the 2017—2020 period was adopted and implemented along the five GSP pillars of *** on the experience of the last four years,this study demonstrates that establishing sub-regional and national partnerships is an additional step in a concrete sustainable soil management implementation *** also suggests that a complementary approach between legal instruments and voluntary initiatives linked to the development of efficient communication and strong commitment is the key to success.

Vespa velutina is an invasive hornet species that is colonising Europe,generating considerable impacts on honeybees,beekeeping and *** and early warning strategies for this species are mainly based on monitoring plans and procedures of nest detection and *** tools(harmonic radar,radio-telemetry)have been developed to increase the probabilities of nest detection in new *** hornets are able to regulate nest temperature,thermography may represent an additional technique that may be used,both alone or in support to other *** this study,the viability of thermal imaging in detecting nests of *** was evaluated in controlled *** influence of different environmental and operative variables(time of the day,presence/absence of leaves covering the nest,distance between the nest and the operator)were tested on three nests detected during August 2018 in *** the nests were detectable by thermal imaging,but environmental and operative variables affect their *** temperature difference between the nests and the surrounding reaches its maximum before sunrise and without a tree canopy covering the *** nests were visible in some cases from 30 m,the detectability was higher at shorter distances,even if this variable may also depend on infrared camera *** increase in the environmental temperature also generates a decrease of nest *** some limitations could occur,these results show the applicability of thermography in detecting V velutina nests before the beginning of the reproductive phase,and consequently its potentiality in control strategies.

Based on the supercritical ＂wingl＂ which was released in the DPW-III conference, multi-objective optimization has been done to increase the lift-drag ratio at cruise condition and improve transonic buffet boundary and drag-rise performance. Hicks-Henne shape functions are used to represent the bump shape. In the design optimization to increase lift-drag ratio, the objectives involve the cruise point and three other off-design points nearby. In the other optimization process to improve buffet and drag-rise performance, three buffet onset points near the cruise point and one drag-rise point are selected as the design points. Non-dominating sort genetic algorithm II （NSGA-II） is used in both processes. Additionally, individual analysis for every selected point on the Pareto frontier is conducted in order to avoid local convergence and achieve global optimum. Re- sults of optimization for aerodynamic efficiency show a decrease of 11 counts in drag at the cruise point. Drag at nearby off-design points are also reduced to some extent. Similar approaches are made to improve buffet and drag-rise characteristics, resulting in significant improvements in both ways.

In the mid seventies a new propulsor for aircraft was designed and investigated - the so-called PROPFAN. With regard to the total pressure increase, it ranges between a conventional propeller and a turbofan with very high bypass ratio. This new propulsion system promised a reduction in fuel consumption of 15 to 25% compared to engines at that time.A lot of propfans (Hamilton Standard, USA) with different numbers of blades and blade shapes have been designed and tested in wind tunnels in order to find an optimum in efficiency, Fig.1. Parallel to this development GE, USA, made a design of a counter rotating unducted propfan, the so-called UDF, Fig.2. A prototype engine was manufactured and investigated on an in-flight test bed mounted at the MD82 and the B727. Since that time there has not been any further development of propfans (except AN 70 with NK 90-engine, Ukraine, which is more or less a propeller design) due to relatively low fuel prices and technical obstacles. Only technical programs in different countries are still going on in order to prepare a data base for designing counter rotating fans in terms of aeroacoustics, aerodynamics and aeroelasticities. In DLR, Germany, a lot of experimental and numerical work has been undertaken to understand the physical behaviour of the unsteady flow in a counter rotating fan.
