Cotton yield per unit ground area has stagnated for a dozen years in Hubei Province, China, although a series of new high- yielding varieties have been commercialized. A multi-location investigation was carried out in 2008 and 2009 in 13 counties to determine if increased planting population density （PPD） would break the stagnant yield. The results showed that significant differences among the fields existed in theoretical yield, PPD, and bolls per square meter （BPM）. The lowest yield of 1 641.1 kg ha-I was resulted from the lowest PPD of 1.7 plants m-2 and the lowest BPM of 71.8 bolls m-2, while the highest yield of 2 779.7 kg ha-~ was resulted from the highest PPD of 2.5 plants m-2, and the highest BPM of 129.4 bolls m-z. Plant mapping revealed that boll retention rate （BRR） was maintained over 30 or 40% for the first 17-18 fruiting branches （FBs） and decreased dramatically thereafter, rotten boll rate （RBR） decreased, but open boll rate （OBR） rose first and dropped later with rising FB from the bottom to the top. But BRR, RBR, and OBR were all dropped with the fruiting positions （FPs） extending outwards. The optimum range of plant density would be 2-3 plants m-2 and the proper individual plant structure would be 16-19 FBs with 5-7 FPs for cotton production in Hubei Province.

BACKGROUND: combined hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CC) is a rare histopathologic form of primary liver cancer. We report a case of cHCC-CC and review the literature. METHOD: The clinicopathological features of a 61-year-old male were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was preoperatively considered on the basis of clinical findings resembling those associated with HCC. Hepatectomy was therefore performed. Microscopically, the specimen displayed histological features of cHCC-CC. The patient has remained alive after follow-up for 3 months without evidence of recurrence and metastasis. CONCLUSION: It is difficult to make a correct preoperative diagnosis of cHCC-CC and hepatic resection is the treatment of choice.

BACKGROUND: Solitary necrotic nodule of the liver is a rare nonmalignant lesion. The present study aimed to clarify the clinical features of the disease. METHOD: The medical records of 51 patients with histologically confirmed solitary necrotic nodule of the liver who received surgical resection at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Solitary necrotic nodule of the liver was found mainly in males (68.6%, 35/51), and patients ranged in age from 5 to 69 years with a mean of 45.3. Most of the patients (72.5%) had no significant symptoms, with negative results for the serum tumor markers alpha-fetoprotein, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 and carcinoembryonic antigen. The mean diameter of the nodule was 23 mm (range 10-55 mm). Compared with ultrasonographic and computed tomography findings, the specific features of magnetic resonance imaging were more helpful for differential diagnosis of the disease. CONCLUSIONS: Solitary necrotic nodule of the liver is a rare nonmalignant lesion, showing no notable symptoms and potential complications. The pathological change of the disease is not significant over a lifetime. Conservative treatment and clinical follow-up are recommended.

Objective To disseminate the knowledge of contraception and STD/AIDS prevention to unmarried young *** A peer-led 8-month intervention on reproductive health promotion and STD/ AIDS preve,tion was conducted in joint venture factories in Kunshan County through existing famity planning service network. A quasi-experimental design was used. Results The contraception. STD/AIDS related knowledge and attitudes improved significantly, and the use of condom also increased significantly in experimental group after the intervention. No such changes occurred in control group. Conclusion This study demonstrates that the peer-led education is an effective approvach of expanding reproductive health and AIDS prevention services to unmarried young adults in the joint venture factories.

BACKGROUND: Poorer prognosis is seen in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after curative hepatic resection with early recurrence (1 year). This study aimed to identify risk factors for postoperative early recurrence of small HCC (100 ng/ml, lack of tumor capsule formation, microscopic vascular invasion, high Edmonson-Steiner grades, and cytokeratin-19 (CK-19) expression (P100 ng/ml (odds ratio 2.561, 95% confidence interval 1.057 to 6.206, P=0.037) and microscopic vascular invasion (odds ratio 4.549, 95% confidence interval 1.865 to 11.097, P=0.001) were independent factors. CONCLUSIONS: Postoperative early recurrence is related to serum AFP level >100 ng/ml and microscopic vascular invasion in patients with small HCC. Adjuvant therapy and careful follow-up are required for patients with these risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Hepatic angiomyolipoma (HAML) is a rare hepatic mesenchymal tumor. This study was designed to explore its clinical features. METHODS: Clinical data from 26 patients who had been pathologically confirmed with HAML and had received surgical resection at our hospital were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: HAML was seen more frequently in females (18/26) in this series, and most of the patients presented no significant symptoms except for one who had a spontaneous rupture hemorrhage. Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were negative in all patients. Imaging presentations were diverse. Pre-operative diagnosis was made in only 3 patients. Pathological study showed that the tumor was composed of adipose tissue, smooth muscle and blood vessels in different proportions. One patient showed hepatic vessel invasion. HMB-45 immunohistochemical staining was positive in all tumors. All patients underwent surgical resection without significant complications. Except for one patient who died 14 months after operation because of recurrent disease, no tumor recurrence was observed in the remaining 25 patients during a 2-3 years follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Pre-operative diagnosis of HAML is difficult. There are potential risks of spontaneous rupture and malignant transformation. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice for HAML.

Objective Study on the effect of NF-κB in ox-LDL injured HUVEC-304 and the intervention with the serum of Tongmai Decoction. Methods Tongmai Decoction herbage-contained serum was made by the serum pharmacology methods, then the HUVEC-304 cells were divided into 5 groups and incubated for 24 h: 1) normal group;2) fetal calf serum group; 3) ox-LDL group; 4) simvastatin group; 5) Tongmai Decoction group. RT-PCR was used to determine the mRNA of NF-κB in the cells, Western Blot Assay was used to determine the protein content of NF-κB in the cells. Results 1) Compared with the cells in normal group and serum control group , the endothelial cells in ox-LDL group are seriously injured, while those in Tongmai Decoction group grow better; 2) Compared with the cells in normal group and fetal calf serum group, the expressions of NF-κB gene and protein are up-regulated in ox-LDL group(P＜0.05, P＜0.01); 3) Compared with the cells in ox-LDL group, the expression of NF-κB gene and protein in Tongmai Decoction group are significantly down-regulated, there is no difference between Tongmai Decoction group and simvastatin group(P＞0.05). Conclusion Tongmai Decoction can protect the injured endothelial cells, up-regulate the expressions of NF-κB gene and protein content.

Dear Editor,This letter studies the bipartite consensus tracking problem for heterogeneous multi-agent systems with actuator faults and a leader's unknown time-varying control input. To handle such a problem, the continuous fault-tolerant control protocol via observer design is developed. In addition, it is strictly proved that the multi-agent system driven by the designed controllers can still achieve bipartite consensus tracking after faults occur.
