Many flaviviruses are emerging and reemerging pathogens, such as West Nile virus （WNV）, dengue virus （DENV）, yellow fever virus （YFV）, and Japanese encephalitis virus. Serological assay is the dominant method for diagnosis of flavivirus infections in human. Because antibodies generated during flavivirus infections cross-react with other flavivirus members, plaque reduction neutralization test （PRNT） is the only available assay to determine the infecting flavivirus type. Since PRNT requires culturing raw viruses, it must be performed in biosafety levet-3 or level-4 containment for many flaviviruses, and takes more than ten days to complete. To overcome these problems, we have developed flavivirus viral-like particles （VLPs） that could be used to replace raw viruses in the neutralization assay. The VLPs were prepared by trans packaging a luciferase-reporting replicon with viral structural proteins. This novel assay involves three simple steps：（i） VLPs from a panel of flaviviruses are incubated with flavivirus-infected sera at 37℃ for 1 h; （ii）the neutralized VLPs are used to infect Vero cells; and （iii） the infected cells are measured for luciferase activities at 22 h post-infection. The virus type whose VLP is most efficiently neutralized by the serum specimen （as quantified by the luciferase activities） is the etiologic agent. As a proof-of-concept, we show that a WNV-infected mouse serum neutralized the WNV VLP more efficiently and selectively than the DENV and YFV VLPs. Our results demonstrate that the VLP neutralization assay maintains the ＂gold standard＂ of the classic PRNT; importantly, it shortens the assay time from 〉10 days to 〈1 day, and can be performed in biosafety level-2 facility.

Floating breakwaters with a mooring system have been widely applied to protect marine infrastructures(e.g.,artificial beach or island,aquaculture farm or marine vessels in harbors)from being destroyed by severe *** this paper,an innovative cylindrical dual pontoon-net floating breakwater was developed to enhance the wave attenuation *** dual-module floating breakwater system was constructed as the prototype for on-site testing.A fully nonlinear time-domain model based on the coupled iterative solutions of the fluid integral equation and the pontoon-net dynamic equations was proposed to simulate the interactions between waves and the floating breakwater *** flow field around the nets was simulated by introducing a porous-media model with Darcy’s law,while the deformation of the flexible nets was solved by using the lumped mass *** instantaneous free surface was captured using the mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian(MEL)approach which employs an improved moving-grid technique based on the spring analysis to re-mesh the instantaneous water surface and the body wetted ***-site tests were also conducted to evaluate wave transmission performance of the floating breakwater system and to validate the numerical *** comparisons show that the numerical solutions are in good agreement with the measured *** effects of incident wave direction,wave period,wave height,net height,net number and net porosity on the hydrodynamic performance of the floating breakwater system were emphatically examined.

A bacterial cell surface display technique based on an ice nucleation protein has been employed for the development of live vaccine against viral infection. Due to its ubiquitous ability to invade host cells, Salmonella typhimurium might be a good candidate for displaying viral antigens. We demonstrated the surface display of domain III of Japanese encephalitis virus E protein and the enhanced green fluorescent protein on S. typhimurium BRD509 using the ice nucleation protein. The effects of the motif in the ice nucleation protein on the effective display of integral protein were also investigated. The results showed that display motifs in the protein can target integral foreign protein on the surface of S. typhimurium BRD509. Moreover, recombinant strains with surface displayed viral proteins retained their invasiveness, suggesting that the recombinant S. typhimurium can be used as live vaccine vector for eliciting complete immunogenicity. The data may yield better understanding of the mechanism by which ice nucleation protein displays foreign proteins in the Salmonella strain.

Dear editor,Ebola virus(EBOV)is a member of the genus Orthoebolavirus within the family of ***'s the causative agent of Ebola virus disease(EVD),characterized by general malaise,severe gastrointestinal illness,febrile,coagulopathy,multi-organs dysfunction,and high mortality(up to 90%)in humans and nonhuman primates(NHPs)(Jacob et al.,2020).Since its discovery in 1976,EBOV has grabbed the global concerns,especially after the West African epidemic from 2014 to 2016,which resulted in 30,000 cases and over 11,000 deaths(Feldmann et al.,2020;Jacob et al.,2020).From 2018 to 2022,there have been thousands of infections primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo(DRC),resulting in over 2000 *** highlights the importance of continued attention and ongoing surveillance(***/emergenci es/disease-outbreak-news).

MoS_(2) nanomaterial with the micro-pompon structure was synthesized by a surfactant-assisted hydrothermal *** morphologies and structures of as-prepared MoS_(2) micro-pompon were investigated by adding different types of surfactants such as cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB),sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate(SDBS),and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP).The results indicated that the morphology of MoS_(2) could be controlled and changed effectively by the cationic sur-factant of CTAB.A reasonable growth mechanism for hollow structured MoS_(2) micro-pompon by hydrothermal processes was ***,photocatalytic degradation properties of MoS_(2) micro-pompon under visible light were evaluated by degradation of common organic dyes,which include rhodamine B(RhB),congo red,methyl orange,and methylene *** results indicated that MoS_(2) micro-pompon owned the highly selective catalytic ability to RhB with degradation efficiency of 95%in 60 min and 68%in 30 *** the additive of the surfactant,the MoS_(2)-CTAB sample exhibited an enhanced ability of photocatalytic activity where degradation efficiency was improved to 92%in 30 *** method employed in this work could be expanded to fabricate other sulfides with the controllable morphology and structure to further regulate the photocatalytic performance.

Dear Editor,Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19),caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2),has spread rapidly and developed into a global pandemic since its outbreak in December ***,there is no antiviral treatment available for human *** compounds,such as remdesivir and chloroquine,have been reported to inhibit SARS-CoV-2 replication effectively in vitro,but for most of them,the in vivo efficacies against SARS-CoV-2 are still under clinical studies,and for chloroquine,a drug with prominent in vitro antiviral activity,it has been found no beneficial effect for COVID-19 patients in the recent largest *** is thus urgent to speed up large-scale screening to discover drug candidates to treat COVID-19.
