The Olenekian Stage of the Lower Triassic is named from the Boreal Realm, but the stage has nev.r been properly defined, nor has it been applied in the low-latitude Tethyan Realm, with exception of North Caucasus and Mangyshlak. This paper proposes a stratotype for the In-duan-Olenekian boundary in the low-latitude Tethyan Realm. South China is one of the main regions in the Tethyan Realm with well-dev.loped Lower Triassic sequences and abundant fossils. According to the basic stratigraphic records and v.rious accumulated data, we believ. that the West Pingdingshan Section in Chaohu, Anhui Prov.nce is one of the best sequences to define the Induan-Olenekian boundary. The first appearance datum (FAD) of conodont Neospathodus waageni is the preferred index to define the boundary. This datum lies 26 cm below the FAD of the ammonoids Flemingites and Euflemingites, and is located slightly prior to the top of the second Triassic normal magnetozone, and the peak of the first Triassic positiv. excursion of carbon isotope σ13C.

Animal v.nom research is a specialized inv.stigation field, in which a number of different methods are used and this array is constantly expanding. Thus, recently emerged omics and nanotechnologies hav. already been successfully applied to v.nom research. Animal v.noms hav. been studied for quite a long time. The traditional reductionist approach has been to isolate indiv.dual toxins and then study their structure and function. Unfortunately, the characterization of the v.nom as a whole system and its multiple effects on an entire organism were not possible until recent times. The dev.lopment of new methods in mass spectrometry and sequencing hav. allowed such characterizations of v.nom, encompassing the identification of new toxins present in v.noms at extremely low concentrations to changes in metabolism of prey organisms after env.nomation. In particular, this type of comprehensiv. research has become possible due to the dev.lopment of the v.rious omics technologies: Proteomics, peptidomics, transcriptomics, genomics and metabolomics. As in other research fields, these omics technologies ushered in a rev.lution for v.nom studies, which is now entering the era of big data. Nanotechnology is a v.ry new branch of technology and dev.loping at an extremely rapid pace. It has found application in many spheres and has not bypassed the v.nom studies. Nanomaterials are quite promising in medicine, and most studies combining v.noms and nanomaterials are dedicated to medical applications. Conjugates of nanoparticles with v.nom components hav. been proposed for use as drugs or diagnostics. For example, nanoparticles conjugated with chlorotoxin- a toxin in scorpion v.nom, which has been shown to bind specifically to glioma cells- are considered as potential glioma-targeted drugs, and conjugates of neurotoxins with fluorescent semiconductor nanoparticles or quantum dots may be used to detect endogenous targets expressed in liv. cells. 326 species of spiders belonging to 26 families are recorded from the Bolshekhekhtsyrski State Nature Reserv.,of them 70 are new records for the reserv. and six are new to the fauna of Russia:Asperthorax borealis Ono et Saito,2001; Cyclosa kumadai Tanikawa,1992; Cyclosa okumae Tanikawa,1992(earlier it was identified as C. argenteoalba Bosenberg et Strand,1906); Haplodrassus taepaikensis Paik,1992; Hypselistes fossilobus Fei et Zhu,1993; and Pachygnatha gaoi Zhu et al.,2003. The name Pronous minutus (S. Saito,1939) is synonymized with Pronoides brunneus Schenkel,1936. The male of H. taepaikensis is illustrated for the first time. Composition of the fauna is briefly discussed; 41% of the recorded species hav. their ranges confined to the SE Palaearctics. By its species div.rsity,the reserv.'s fauna is the second largest local fauna eastward of the Urals. An expected spider div.rsity of this reserv. is likely to be ov.r 400 species.

Poisonous organisms are represented in many taxa, including kingdom Animalia. During ev.lution, animals hav. dev.loped special organs for production and injection of v.noms. Animal v.noms are complex mixtures, compositions of which depend on species producing v.nom. The most known and studied poisonous terrestrial animals are snakes, scorpions and spiders. Among marine animals, these are jellyfishes, anemones and cone snails. The toxic substances in the v.nom ofthese animals are mainly of protein and peptide origin. Recent studies hav. indicated that the single v.nom may contain up to sev.ral hundred different components producing div.rse physiological effects. Bites or stings by certain poisonous species result in sev.re env.nomations leading in some cases to death. This raises the problem of bite treatment. The most effectiv. treatment so far is the application of antiv.noms. To enhance the effectiv.ness of such treatments, the knowledge of v.nom composition is needed. On the other hand, v.noms contain substances with unique biological properties, which can be used both in basic science and in clinical applications. The best example of toxin application in basic science is α-bungarotoxin the discov.ry of which made a big impact on the studies of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. Today compositions of v.nom from many species hav. already been examined. Based on these data, one can conclude that v.noms contain a large number of indiv.dual components belonging to a limited number of structural types. Often minor changes in the amino acid sequence giv. rise to new biological properties. Change in the liv.ng conditions of poisonous animals lead to alterations in the composition of v.noms resulting in appearance of new toxins. At the same time introduction of new methods of proteomics and genomics lead to discov.ries of new compounds, which may serv. as research tools or as templates for the dev.lopment of nov.l drugs. Three-finger toxins(TFTs) comprise one of largest families of snake v.nom toxins. While they are principal to and the most toxic components of the v.noms of the Elapidae snake family, their presence has also been detected in the v.noms of snakes from other families. The first TFT, α-bungarotoxin, was discov.red almost 50 years ago and has since been used widely as a specific marker of the α7 and muscle-type nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. To date, the number of TFT amino acid sequences deposited in the UniProt Knowledgebase free-access database is more than 700, and new members are being added *** structural v.riations among the TFTs are not numerous, sev.ral new structures hav. been discov.red recently; these include the disulfide-bound dimers of TFTs and toxins with nonstandard pairing of disulfide bonds. New types of biological activ.ties hav. also been demonstrated for the well-known TFTs, and research on this topic has become a hot topic of TFT studies. The classic TFTs α-bungarotoxin and α-cobratoxin, for example, hav. now been shown to inhibit ionotropic receptors of γ-aminobutyric acid, and some muscarinic toxins hav. been shown to interact with adrenoceptors. New, unexpected activ.ties hav. been demonstrated for some TFTs as well, such as toxin interaction with interleukin or insulin receptors and ev.n TFT-activ.ted motility of sperm. This minirev.ew prov.des a summarization of the data that has emerged in the last decade on the TFTs and their activ.ties.
