The purpose of this study was to estimate the Coniacian latitudinal thermal gradient in the Northern Hemisphere. Both hemipelagic （ammonoids） and benthic （brachiopods and bivalves） δ18O and δ^13C records were used. They originated from Coniacian shallow-water sequences across a wide range of paleolatitudes, from the Koryak upland （northern Kamchatka, Russian Far East） in the north, to Hokkaido （Japan） in the south. Among Coniacian ammonoids, both migrants from Hokkaido living in high latitudes （Kamchatka） and endemic forms dwelling in middle-low latitudes （Hokkaido） indicate seemingly close optimal growth temperatures. Nevertheless, certain differences in climatic conditions, prevailing during high-latitude coldest seasons, undoubtedly provoked growth cessation in some groups of ammonites. Our isotopic study suggests latitudinal temperature changes of only 0.12 ℃ per degree of latitude for the Northern Hemisphere in Coniacian times, while the average annual temperature in North Kamchatka seems about 3.3 ℃ lower than that in Hokkaido.

A new type homogeneous planar PC （photoelectric converter） on the basis of multijunction semiconductor n＋-p-p＋-n＋-p-p＋-...-n＋-p-p＋ structure has been investigated. The entire structure is a cascade PC consisting of a number of elements of the structure--single PCs connected in series and illuminated by light that has consistently passed through the previous semiconductor layers. The theory of converter of both monochromatic and solar radiation has been developed and the limiting values of their photoelectric and power characteristics have been determined, including the optimal thickness and number of single PCs layered on a base PC, their spectral sensitivity, current-voltage characteristics and efficiency. The open-circuit voltage grows practically linearly with the number of elements in the cascade. The top efficiency limit for a certain optimal elements number reaches its maximum that exceeds considerably that of the base PC, especially in the range of low collecting coefficient of charge carriers in the base PC.

Increasing evidence points to a role for killer immunoglobulin-like receptors(KIRs)in the development of autoimmune *** particular,a positive association of KIR3DS1(activating receptor)and a negative association of KIR3DL1(inhibitory receptor)alleles with ankylosing spondylitis(AS)have been reported by several ***,none of the studies analyzed these associations in the context of functionality of polymorphic *** better understand how the KIR3DL1/3DS1 genes determine susceptibility to AS,we analyzed the frequencies of alleles and genotypes encoding functional(KIR3DL1*F)and non-functional(KIR3DL1*004)*** genotyped 83 AS patients and 107 human leukocyte antigen(HLA)-B27-positive healthy controls from the Russian Caucasian population using a two-stage sequence-specific primer PCR,which distinguishes KIR3DS1,KIR3DL1*F and KIR3DL1*004 *** the patients carrying two functional KIR3DL1 alleles,those alleles were additionally genotyped to identify KIR3DL1*005 and KIR3DL1*007 alleles,which are functional but are expressed at low ***3DL1 was negatively associated with AS at the expense of KIR3DL1*F but not of KIR3DL1**** finding indicates that the inhibitory KIR3DL1 receptor protects against the development of AS and is not simply a passive counterpart of the segregating KIR3DS1 allele encoding the activating ***,analysis of genotype frequencies indicates that the presence of KIR3DS1 is a more important factor for AS susceptibility than the absence of KIR3DL1**** activation of either natural killer(NK)or T cells via the KIR3DS1 receptor can be one of the critical events in AS development,while the presence of the functional KIR3DL1 receptor has a protective ***,even individuals with a genotype that carried two inhibitory KIR3DL1 alleles expressed at high levels could develop AS.

Esophageal adenocarcinoma is the most rapidly growing cancer in *** the prognosis after diagnosis is unfavorable,the chance of a successful outcome increases tremendously if detected early while the lesion is still ***,the present standard-of-care,endoscopic surveillance,has major limitations,since dysplasia is invisible,often focal,and systematic biopsies typically sample less than one percent of the esophageal lining and therefore easily miss *** solve this problem we developed a multispectral light scattering endoscopic imaging *** surveys the entire esophageal lining and accurately detects subcellular dysplastic *** system combines light scattering spectroscopy,which detects and identifies invisible dysplastic sites by analyzing light scattered from epithelial cells,with rapid scanning of the entire esophageal lining using a collimated broadband light beam delivered by an endoscopically compatible fiber optic *** we report the results of the first comprehensive multispectral imaging study,conducted as part of routine endoscopic procedures performed on patients with suspected *** a double-blind study that characterized the system’s ability to serve as a screening tool,55 out of 57 patients were diagnosed *** addition,a smaller double-blind comparison of the multispectral data in 24 patients with subsequent pathology at locations where 411 biopsies were collected yielded an accuracy of 90%in detecting individual locations of dysplasia,demonstrating the capability of this method to serve as a guide for biopsy.

Electrical triggering of earthquakes:results of laboratory experiments at spring-block models

Recently published results of field and laboratory experiments on the seismic/acoustic response to injection of direct current （DC） pulses into the Earth crust or stressed rock samples raised a question on a possibility of electrical earthquake triggering. A physical mechanism of the considered phenomenon is not clear yet in view of the very low current density （10-7-10-s A/m^2） generated by the pulsed power systems at the epicenter depth （5-10 km） of local earthquakes occurred just after the current injection. The paper describes results of laboratory ＂earthquake＂ triggering by DC pulses under conditions of a spring-block model simulated the seismogenic fault. It is experimentally shown that the electric triggering of the laboratory ＂earthquake＂（sharp slip of a movable block of the spring-block system） is possible only within a range of subcritical state of the system, when the shear stress between the movable and fixed blocks obtains 0.98-0.99 of its critical value. The threshold of electric triggering action is about 20 A/m^2 that is 7-8 orders of magnitude higher than estimated electric current density for Bishkek test site （Northern Tien Shan, Kirghizia） where the seismic response to the man-made electric action was observed. In this connection, the electric triggering phenomena may be explained by contraction of electric current in the narrow conductive areas of the faults and the corresponding increase in current density or by involving the secondary triggering mechanisms like electromagnetic stimulation of conductive fluid migration into the fault area resulted in decrease in the fault strength properties.

The liver is a unique parenchymal organ with a regenerative capacity allowing it to restore up to 70%of its *** knowledge of this phenomenon dates back to Greek mythology(the story of Prometheus),many aspects of liver regeneration are still not understood.A variety of different factors,including inflammatory cytokines,growth factors,and bile acids,promote liver regeneration and control the final size of the organ during typical regeneration,which is performed by mature hepatocytes,and during alternative regeneration,which is performed by recently identified resident stem cells called“hepatic progenitor cells”.Hepatic progenitor cells drive liver regeneration when hepatocytes are unable to restore the liver mass,such as in cases of chronic injury or excessive acute *** liver maintenance,the body mass ratio is essential for homeostasis because the liver has numerous functions;therefore,a greater understanding of this process will lead to better control of liver injuries,improved transplantation of small grafts and the discovery of new methods for the treatment of liver *** current review sheds light on the key molecular pathways and cells involved in typical and progenitor-dependent liver mass regeneration after various acute or chronic *** studies and a better understanding of liver regeneration will lead to the development of new therapeutic methods for liver diseases.

Soils result from the interaction of five independent formation *** one factor varies,while the others remain constant,different soils can be ***,we demonstrated an opposing trend,wherein two soils were similar,despite considerable differences in all factors of soil *** sampled two Inceptisols(Oxic Dystrudepts) formed on different parent materials(gneiss *** schist),climate(tropical altimontane ***,drier plateau),topography(1 650 m,45% slope vs.1 000 m,8% slope),time(rejuvenated ***,stable surface),and vegetation(rainforest *** savanna).The two soils had similar chemical properties,whereas the soil on mica schist had finer particle size distribution,lower porosity,and lower saturated hydraulic *** properties were related to a coarser blocky microstructure compared to the soil on *** soils presented active mineral weathering and pronounced pedoplasmation,demonstrated by clay contents>300 g kg^(-1),although only the Dystrudept on gneiss possessed coarse rock *** C horizons of both soils presented fragmented clay coatings suggestive of argilluviation,likely relict,because they were not observed in the B *** similarities in many properties of the two Dystrudepts,despite contrasting factors of soil formation,suggest converging evolution and that soil classification at the subgroup level was efficient in grouping similar formative processes in tropical ***,this work revealed that similar pedogenic processes acting on different factors of soil formation can result in similar soil properties,at least for Inceptisols where further soil development is hindered by topographic limitations.
