SDGSAT-1: Capabilities for Monitoring and Evaluating SDG Indicators

SDGSAT-1,the world's first science satellite dedicated to assisting the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda,has been operational for over two and a half *** provides valuable data to aid in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals *** its Open Science Program,the satellite has maintained consistent operations and delivered free data to scientific and technological users from 88 *** program has produced a wealth of scientific output,with 72 papers,including 28 on data processing methods and 44 on applications for monitoring progress toward SDGs related to sustainable cities,clean energy,life underwater,climate action,and clean water and ***-1 is equipped with three key instruments:a multispectral imager,a thermal infrared spectrometer,and a glimmer imager,which have enabled ground-breaking research in a variety of domains such as water quality analysis,identification of industrial heat sources,assessment of environmental disaster impacts,and detection of forest *** precise measurements and ongoing monitoring made possible by this invaluable data significantly advance our understanding of various environmental *** are essential for making well-informed decisions on a local and global *** its application to academic research,SDGSAT-1 promotes global cooperation and strengthens developing countries'capacity to accomplish their sustainable development *** the satellite continues to gather and distribute data,it plays a pivotal role in developing strategies for environmental protection,disaster management and relief,and resource *** initiatives highlight the satellite's vital role in fostering international collaboration and technical innovation to advance scientific knowledge and promote a sustainable future.

Misclassification error propagation in land cover change categorization

It is important to describe misclassification errors in land cover maps and to quantify their propagation through geo-processing to resultant information products,such as land cover change *** simulation is widely used in error modeling,as it can generate equal-probable realizations of the fields being considered,which can be summarized to facilitate error propagation *** fix noninvariance in indicator simulation,discriminant space-based methods were proposed to enhance consistency in area-class mapping and replicability in uncertainty modeling,as the former is achieved by imposing means while the latter is ensured by projecting spatio-temporal correlated residuals in discriminant space to geographic space through a mapping *** paper explores discriminant models for error propagation in land cover change detection,followed by experiments based on bi-temporal remote sensing *** was found that misclassification error propagation is effectively characterized with discriminant covariate-based stochastic simulation,where spatio-temporal interdependence is taken into account.

Geostatistical approaches to refinement of digital elevation data

Data refinement refers to the processes by which a dataset’s resolution,in particular,the spatial one,is refined,and is thus synonymous to spatial *** resolution indicates measurement scale and can be seen as an index for regular data *** a type of change of scale,data refinement is useful for many scenarios where spatial scales of existing data,desired analyses,or specific applications need to be made commensurate and *** spatial data are related to certain data support,they can be conceived of as support-specific realizations of random fields,suggesting that multivariate geostatistics should be explored for refining datasets from their coarser-resolution versions to the finerresolution *** this paper,geostatistical methods for downscaling are described,and were implemented using GTOPO30 data and sampled Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data at a site in northwest China,with the latter’s majority grid cells used as surrogate reference *** was found that proper structural modeling is important for achieving increased accuracy in data refinement;here,structural modeling can be done through proper decomposition of elevation fields into trends and residuals and *** was confirmed that effects of semantic differences on data refinement can be reduced through properly estimating and incorporating biases in local means.

A novel image-fusion method based on the un-mixing of mixed MS sub-pixels regarding high-resolution DSM

A major reason for the spectral distortions of fused images generated by current image-fusion methods is that the fused versions of mixed multispectral(MS)sub-pixels(MSPs)corresponding to panchromatic(PAN)pure pixels remain *** MSPs can be un-mixed spectrally to pure pixels having the same land cover classes in a fine classification map during the fusion *** it is difficult to produce such a land cover classification map using only MS and PAN images,a Digital Surface Model(DSM)derived from airborne Light Detection And Ranging data were employed in this study to facilitate the *** a novel fusion method proposed in this paper,MSPs near and across boundaries between vegetation and non-vegetation are identified using MS,PAN,and normalized Digital Surface Model(nDSM).The identified MSPs then are fused to pure pixels with respect to the corresponding land cover class in the classification *** a test on WorldView-2 images over an urban area and the corresponding nDSM,the fused image generated by the proposed method was visually and quantitatively compared with fused images obtained using common image-fusion *** fused images generated by the proposed method yielded minimal spectral distortions and sharpened boundaries between vegetation and non-vegetation.

As a World Cultural Heritage site with sacred landscape featuring an exceptional range of Buddhist art and architecture,much attention has been focused on the sustainable development of Bagan(Myanmar).Particularly,the monitoring of landscape surface subsidence and monument instability is of great importance to the protection and development planning of the Bagan heritage *** this study,we applied high resolution TerraSAR-X imagery acquired from 2019 to 2020 for deformation monitoring based on the small baseline subset(SBAS)and persistent scatterer synthetic aperture radar interferometry(PSInSAR)*** identified several hotspots and pagodas with displacement anomalies linked to land cover change and previous *** cross comparison between SBAS and PSInSAR and the precision of height estimates derived by PSInSAR indicated a millimetric precision of the derived deformation *** combination of the two multi-temporal SAR interferometry approaches satisfies the two-scale monitoring requirements from landscapes to monuments,particularly for large-scale World Heritage *** non-contact monitoring method has potential when traditional methods using field accessibility and surveillance are constrained.

提出了一种基于多点地统计学理论的遥感影像融合方法,旨在用多点地统计模拟提高融合后影像的空间分辨率。模拟从训练图像中提取包含空间相关性信息的模型,再通过基于模式的判别准则实现局部相似图案的重现。其中采用面-点协同克里格法为模拟提供制约条件,以解决不同数据支撑间的转换问题。实验用于Landsat ETM+影像的融合,结果表明,基于面-点协同克里格的多点地统计模拟方法与未考虑数据支撑差异的模拟相比较能达到更高的融合精度。该方法亦可用于其他类型空间数据的套合。

Research on the different content of weathered sand influence on expansive characteristic of a highway expansive soil in Yichang

This paper aims at widespread presence of expansive soil which can be obtained in the project from Xiaoxita to Yaqueling first-class highway rebuilding engineering in Yichang City of Hubei Province and weathered sand which can be made full use locally,many experiments have been made. Compaction experiments and expansibility index indoor experiments of undisturbed expansive soil and expansive soil mixed with sand ranging from 10 % to 50 % have been made. Through the test mixing undisturbed expansive soil with different content of weathered sand,it can change the expansive soil water characteristics and compaction characteristics. It can influence the expansibility of the expansive soil index and significantly inhibit the expansibility of the expansive soil and reach the standard of roadbed filler.

提出了一种基于多点地统计学理论的遥感影像分类后处理方法。此方法从训练图像中提取先验的空间结构信息,推断类别的空间分布模式和相关关系,训练图像中能够建立包含空间关系的模型,比传统变异函数模型所表达的点对之间的关系更为丰富。将此方法应用于从Landsat TM影像中提取湿地类别,与空间平滑法和基于马尔科夫随机场的分类方法相比,其总体分类精度有所提高,且对曲线分布的地物类别的处理具有明显优势。

The quantification of the extent and dynamics of land-use changes is a key metric employed to assess the progress toward several Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)that form part of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development *** terms of anthropogenic factors threatening the conservation of heritage properties,such a metric aids in the assessment of achievements toward heritage sustainability solving the problem of insufficient data ***,in this study,589 cultural World Heritage List(WHL)properties from 115 countries were analyzed,encompassing globally distributed and statistically significant samples of“monuments and groups of buildings”(73.2%),“sites”(19.3%),and“cultural landscapes”(7.5%).Land-cover changes in the WHL properties between 2015 and 2020 were automatically extracted from big data collections of high-resolution satellite imagery accessed via Google Earth Engine using intelligent remote sensing *** indexes(SIs)were estimated for the protection zones of each property,and the results were employed,for the first time,to assess the progress of each country toward SDG Target *** the apparent advances in SIs(10.4%),most countries either exhibited steady(20.0%)or declining(69.6%)SIs due to limited cultural investigations and enhanced negative anthropogenic *** study confirms that land-cover changes are among serious threats for heritage conservation,with heritage in some countries wherein the need to address this threat is most crucial,and the proposed spatiotemporal monitoring approach is recommended.

Experimental research on the mixed sand ratio and initial dry density of weathered sand improved expansive soil free load swelling rate

In this paper, through the indoor free load swelling rate test, expansive soil in a section of a first- class highway reconstruction project in Yichang City was studied. It emphatically analyzed the interrelations among free load swelling rate, non-load time, the proportion of mixed sand and initial dry density. Experimen- tal studies have shown that： Free load swelling deformation is mainly divided into three stages of rapid expan- sion, slow expansion and final stability; when the initial dry density is constant, free load swelling rate of the weathered sand modified soil will reduce rapidly before they slow down with the increase of sand proportion, and weathered sand modified soil free load swelling rate is not sensitive to the large amount of sand mixed; in the same mixed sand ratio, weathered sand modified soil free load swelling rate increases rapidly with the in- crease of initial dry density, there is a good linear correlation between them. To take appropriate control of the initial dry density during the expansive soil subgrade construction helps to reduce its swelling deformation and ensures the stability of the embankment.
