Stick–slip behavior of Indian gabbro as studied using a NIED large-scale biaxial friction apparatus

This paper reports stick-slip behaviors of Indian gabbro as studied using a new large-scale biaxial friction apparatus, built in the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention （NIED）, Tsukuba, Japan. The apparatus consists of the existing shaking table as the shear-loading device up to 3,600 kN, the main frame for holding two large rectangular prismatic specimens with a sliding area of 0.75 m^2 and for applying normal stresses an up to 1.33 MPa, and a reaction force unit holding the stationary specimen to the ground. The shaking table can produce loading rates v up to 1.0 m/s, accelerations up to 9.4 m/s^2, and displacements d up to 0.44 m, using four servocontrolled actuators. We report results from eight preliminary experiments conducted with room humidity on the same gabbro specimens at v = 0.1-100 mm/s and an = 0.66-1.33 MPa, and with d of about 0.39 m. The peak and steady-state friction coefficients were about 0.8 and 0.6, respectively, consistent with the Byerlee friction. The axial force drop or shear stress drop during an abrupt slip is linearly proportional to the amount of displacement, and the slope of this rela- tionship determines the stiffness of the apparatus as 1.15 × 10^8 N/m or 153 MPa/m for the specimens we used. This low stiffness makes fault motion very unstable and the overshooting of shear stress to a negative value was recognized in some violent stick-slip events. An abrupt slip occurred in a constant rise time of 16-18 ms despite wide variation of the stress drop, and an average velocity during an abrupt slip is linearly proportional to the stress drop. The use of a large-scale shaking table has a great potential in increasing the slip rate and total displacement in biaxial friction experiments with large specimens.

Relationship between Depression and Aging Awareness among Frail Older Adults Living Alone in Japan

Aim: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between depression and aging awareness among older adults living alone with low-level long-term-care needs. Methods: Participants were older adults aged 65 years and older in Japan. Data were collected via an anonymous questionnaire. Participants were categorized based on their long-term care need level, from Support 1 to Care 2 according to the care insurance criteria in Japan. The questionnaire included: 1) the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Version-Japanese (GDS);2) items on aging life satisfaction at present, and positive and negative aging awareness in the past (when they were young);3) the SF-8 to assess health-related quality of life;4) the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 (LSNS-6);and 5) items on the use of care services. Data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: In total, 457 participants were recruited. Their mean age was 83.9 ± 6.5 years;39.8% of the participants had a GDS score of 6 and above. In the regression analysis, the GDS score significantly correlated with aging life satisfaction at present, negative aging awareness in the past, mental health, and social networks. Conclusion: Older adults living alone who have positive views of their current lives and lacked negative views of aging in their younger years were resistant to depression after being certified as requiring low-level long-term care. Preventing and improving depression in this population requires community-based support to expand their social networks and to help individuals of all ages view the aging process positively.

Protecting the Coastline from the Effects of Climate Change: Adaptive Design for the Coastal Areas of Gangneung, Korea

The purpose of this research is to present design strategies to enable coastal areas to adapt to climate change and maintain the coastlines by addressing the environmental and urban issues. Gangneung is a tourist attraction situated on South Korea’s east coast, and there is an urgent need for integrated research on strategies to prevent the loss of sandy beaches and the damage caused by storm surges and high swell. This research has two objectives: The first is to offer an overview and describe the characteristics of exemplary projects carried out to manage the storm damage while maintaining the coastlines. The second is to propose a design model that can be applied to coastal areas susceptible to climate change by analyzing the design strategies and the current conditions of the Gangneung coastal area. In the case of Gangneung, the damage caused by the storm surges and high swells are more severe compared to inundation caused by sea level rise because of the steep slope and deep water. Therefore, adaptive design strategies are mainly focused on accommodation and retreat strategies that consider these characteristics by moving the coastal roads behind the pine forest and raising the coastal buildings to connect the coast to the forest and to prevent coastal erosion. This research has the potential to be used as an exemplary design adaptation for coastal erosion as well as a basis for regulating the land use policy in areas susceptible to flood by establishing guidelines for publicly funded developments, and preparing long-term relocation plans for the existing coastal developments to create a sustainable and resilient future for the coastal areas.

Seroepidemiology of echovirus 30 in Korean children

Background:Although aseptic meningitis associated with echovirus type 30 has emerged as a global public health concern,no data have been reported on children's immune status against echovirus type *** current study aimed to investigate the seropositivity among Korean children for antibodies against echovirus ***:Two hundred and fifty residual serum samples were collected at ***'s *** were categorized by age into four groups:group 1 (3 months-2 years),group 2 (3-6 years),group 3 (7-10 years) and group 4 (11-15 years).Neutralizing antibodies against echovirus 30 were ***:Seroprotective neutralizing antibodies against echovirus 30 were detected in 129 (49%) *** rates were 23%,48%,55% and 73% in groups 1-4,*** antibody titers,1:256-1:512 was the highest neutralizing antibody titer range in group 2,while 1:1024-1:2048 in group 3 and *** the seropositive individuals in group 3 and 4,6% and 12% had neutralizing antibody titers of 1:2048,***:The seropositivity rate increased significantly with age..The distribution of neutralizing antibody titers varied by age group,and higher ranges of neutralizing antibody titers were observed in higher age *** findings suggest high susceptibility to echovirus 30 infection in children younger than 2 years *** 30 infection in childhood may have contributed to increased neutralizing antibody titers with age.

Noninvasive estimation of liver fibrosis and response to interferon therapy by a serum fibrogenesis marker, YKL-40, in patients with HCV-associated liver disease

AIM: To evaluate the clinical utility of serum fibrosis markers, including YKL-40, in patients with HCV-associated liver disease. METHODS: A total of 109 patients with HCV-associated liver disease were enrolled. We measured serum type IV collagen, amino-terminal peptide of type III procollagen (PIIIP), hyaluronic acid (HA), YKL-40 levels and biochemical. Parameters by RIA or ELISA. Eighty-eight patients underwent liver biopsy, and 67 of 109 patients received interferon (IFN) therapy. We also investigated the relationship between the concentrations of serum fibrosis markers and histological fibrosis scores (METAVIR), and evaluated the changes of the levels of fibrosis markers before and after the IFN therapy. RESULTS: The increase in serum levels of all markers, particularly HA, was correlated with the progression of liver fibrosis (for type IV collagen, F= 9.076, P<0.0001; for PIIIP, F= 9.636, P<0.0001; for HA, F=13.128, P<0.0001; and for YKL-40, F= 8.016, P<0.0001). YKL-40 had strong correlation with HA (r= 0.536, P<0.0001). Based on the receiver operating curve (ROC), the ability of serum HA exceeded the abilities of other serum markers to determine fibrosis score 4 from fibrosis score 0-3 (AUC = 0.854). While YKL-40 was superior to other fibrosis markers for predicting severe fibrosis (F2-F4) from mild fibrosis (FO-F1) (YKL-40, AUC = 0.809; HA, AUC = 0.805). After IFN therapy, only YKL-40 values significantly decreased not only in the responder group, but also in the nonresponder group (P = 0.03). CONCLUSION: YKL-40 may be a useful non-invasive serum marker to estimate the degree of liver fibrosis and to evaluate the efficacy of IFN therapies in patients with HCV-associated liver disease.

Visit-to-Visit Blood Pressure Variability Are Associated with an Imbalance between Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Tone in Hypertensive Patients

Greater fluctuations in office blood pressure increase the risk of stroke and blood pressure volatility is an important risk factor for cardiovascular events. Effects of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve on blood pressure regulation are well known, however, those on visit-to visit variation remains unclear. Aim of this study is to clarify the contribution of sympathetic and parasympathetic balance on blood pressure fluctuation. Methods: We enrolled 23 outpatients with essential hypertension. We measured blood pressure, and pulse rate at clinic 14 times in a row and calculated coefficient of variance (CV) as visit-to-visit variability. The velocity of pupil contraction, miosis (VC) and dilation, mydriasis (VD) was determined from pupillary function test. Results: Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were not significantly correlated with VC, VD and VD/VC. Heart rate was not correlated with VC and VD, but significantly correlated with VD/VC. CV of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and heart rate were not significantly correlated with VC or VD. Ratio of VD to VC significantly negative correlated with CV of blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and heart. Value of VD was significantly correlated with value of VC. Conclusion: Visit-to-visit variability of blood pressure and heart rate is not related with sympathetic or parasympathetic tone independently but augmented by the impaired sympathetic and parasympathetic balance.

The endogenous circadian clock regulates many physiological processes related to plant survival and adapt- ability. GIGANTEA （GI）, a clock-associated protein, contributes to the maintenance of circadian period length and ampli- tude, and also regulates flowering time and hypocotyl growth in response to day length. Similarly, EARLY FLOWERING 4 （ELF4）, another clock regulator, also contributes to these processes. However, little is known about either the genetic or molecular interactions between GI and ELF4 in Arabidopsis. In this study, we investigated the genetic interactions between GI and ELF4 in the regulation of circadian clock-controlled outputs. Our mutant analysis shows that GI is epistatic to ELF4 in flowering time determination, while ELF4 is epistatic to GI in hypocotyl growth regulation. Moreover, GI and ELF4 have a synergistic or additive effect on endogenous clock regulation. Gene expression profiling of gi, elf4, and gi elf4 mutants further established that GI and ELF4 have differentially dominant influences on circadian physiological outputs at dusk and dawn, respectively. This phasing of GI and ELF4 influences provides a potential means to achieve diversity in the regulation of circadian physiological outputs, including flowering time and hypocotyl growth.
