The use of machine learning in computational molecular design has great potential to accelerate the discovery of innovative ***,its practical benefits still remain unproven in real-world applications,particularly in polymer *** demonstrate the successful discovery of new polymers with high thermal conductivity,inspired by machine-learning-assisted polymer *** discovery was made by the interplay between machine intelligence trained on a substantially limited amount of polymeric properties data,expertise from laboratory synthesis and advanced technologies for thermophysical property *** a molecular design algorithm trained to recognize quantitative structure—property relationships with respect to thermal conductivity and other targeted polymeric properties,we identified thousands of promising hypothetical *** these candidates,three were selected for monomer synthesis and polymerization because of their synthetic accessibility and their potential for ease of processing in further *** synthesized polymers reached thermal conductivities of 0.18–0.41 W/mK,which are comparable to those of state-of-the-art polymers in non-composite thermo-plastics.

Study on the optical property and biocompatibility of a tissue engineering cornea

AIM: To study the optical property and biocompatibility of a tissue engineering cornea. METHODS: The cross-linker of N- (3-Dimethylaminoropyl)-N'ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC)/ N-Hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) was mixed with Type I collagen at 10% (weight/volume). The final solution was molded to the shape of a corneal contact lens. The collagen concentrations of 10%, 12.5%, 15%, 17.5% and 20% artificial corneas were tested by UV/vis-spectroscopy for their transparency compared with normal rat cornea. 10-0 sutures were knotted on the edges of substitute to measure the corneal buttons's mechanical properties. Normal rat corneal tissue primary culture on the collagen scaffold was observed in 4 weeks. Histopathologic examinations were performed after 4 weeks of in vitro culturing. RESULTS: The collagen scaffold appearance was similar to that of soft contact lens. With the increase of collagen concentration, the transparency of artificial corneal buttons was diminished, but the toughness of the scaffold was enhanced. The scaffold transparency in the 10% concentration collagen group resembled normal rat cornea. To knot and embed the scaffold under the microscope, 20% concentration collagen group was more effective during implantation than lower concentrations of collagen group. In the first 3 weeks, corneal cell proliferation was highly active. The shapes of cells that grew on the substitute had no significant difference when compared with the cells before they were moved to the scaffold. However, on the fortieth day, most cells detached from the scaffold and died. Histopathologic examination of the primary culture scaffold revealed well grown corneal cells tightly attached to the scaffold in the former culturing. CONCLUSION: Collagen scaffold can be molded to the shape of soft contact corneal lens with NHS/EDC. The biological stability and biocompatibility of collagen from animal species may be used as material in preparing to engineer artificial corneal scaffold.

Heterogeneity in supraglacial debris thickness and its role in glacier mass changes of the Mount Gongga

In the Tibetan Plateau, many glaciers have extensive covers of supraglacial debris in their ablation zones, which affects glacier response to climate change by altering ice melting and spatial patterns of mass loss. Insufficient debris thickness data make it difficult to analyze regional debris-cover effects. Maritime glaciers of the Mount Gongga have been characterized by a substantial reduction in glacier area and ice mass in recent decades. The thermal property of the debris layer estimated from remotely sensed data reveals that debris-covered glaciers are dominant in this region, on which the proportion of debris cover to total glacier area varies from 1.74% to 53.0%. Using a physically-based debris-cover effect assessment model, we found that although the presence of supraglacial debris has a significant insulating effect on heavily debris-covered glaciers, il accelerates ice melting on -10.2% of total ablation zone and produces rapid wastage of -25% of the debris-covered glaciers, leading to the similar mass losses between the debris-covered and debris-free glaciers. Widespread debris cover also facilitates the development of active terminus regions. Regional differences in debris-cover effects are apparent, highlighting the im- portance of debris cover for understanding glacier mass changes in the Tibetan Plateau and other mountain ranges around the world.

Molecular mechanisms of triggering,amplifying and targeting RANK signaling in osteoclasts

Osteoclast differentiation depends on receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB(RANK) signaling,which can be divided into triggering,amplifying and targeting phases based on how active the master regulator nuclear factor of activated T-cells cytoplasmic 1(NFATc1) is. The triggering phase is characterized by immediateearly RANK signaling induced by RANK ligand(RANKL) stimulation mediated by three adaptor proteins,tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6,Grb-2-associated binder-2 and phospholipase C(PLC)γ2,leading to activation of IκB kinase,mitogen-activated protein kinases and the transcription factors nuclear factor(NF)-κB and activator protein-1(AP-1). Mice lacking NF-κB p50/p52 or the AP-1 subunit c-Fos(encoded by Fos) exhibit severe osteopetrosis due to a differentiation block in the osteoclast lineage. The amplification phase occurs about 24 h later in a RANKLinduced osteoclastogenic culture when Ca2+ oscillation starts and the transcription factor NFATc1 is abundantly produced. In addition to Ca2+ oscillation-dependent nuclear translocation and transcriptional auto-induction of NFATc1,a Ca2+ oscillation-independent,osteoblastdependent mechanism stabilizes NFATc1 protein in dif-ferentiating osteoclasts. Osteoclast precursors lacking PLCγ2,inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate receptors,regulator of G-protein signaling 10,or NFATc1 show an impaired transition from the triggering to amplifying phases. The final targeting phase is mediated by activation of numerous NFATc1 target genes responsible for cell-cell fusion and regulation of bone-resorptive function. This review focuses on molecular mechanisms for each of the three phases of RANK signaling during osteoclast differentiation.

Background Neuropathological diagnosis of argyrophilic grain disease(AGD)is currently based primarily on the combination of argyrophilic grain(AG)visualized using Gallyas-Braak silver staining,phosphorylated tau-positive pretangles,coiled bodies,and ballooned neuron *** AGD is common in patients with dementia and/or prominent psychiatric symptoms,whether it is a distinct neurological disease entity or a by-product of the aging process remains *** In 1449 serial forensic autopsy cases>40 years old(823 males and 525 females,aged 40-101 years,mean age 70.0±14.1 years),we examined the frequency and comorbid pathology of AGD cases and investigated the clini-cal appearance by comparing those with non-AGD cases using the propensity *** Of the 1449 cases,we detected 342 AGD cases(23.6%;mean age 79.7 years;177 males and 165 females).The AGD frequency and stage increased with age(P<0.001).Among AGD cases,80(23.4%)patients had dementia,and 51(15.2%)had a history of psychiatric hospital *** frequency of suicide and history of psychiatric disorders were significantly higher in AGD cases than in AGD-negative cases,matched for age,sex,and comorbidity pathol-ogy,with a relative risk of suicide of 1.72(1.30-2.26).The frequency of suicide was significantly higher in AGD cases than in non-AGD cases in female but not male *** relative risk of suicide increased to 2.27(1.20-4.30)and 6.50(1.58-26.76)in AGD patients with Lewy and progressive supranuclear palsy pathology,respectively,and decreased to 0.88(0.38-2.10)in those with advanced AD *** AGD cases,23.4%had dementia;however,the difference was not significant after controlling for age,sex,and comorbid *** Our study demonstrated that AGD is a significant and isolated risk factor for psychiatric hospital visits and suicide *** older adults,AGs may contribute to the progression of functional impairment of the limbic system,which leads to psychiatric dis

Discrete Plane Segmentation and Estimation from a Point Cloud Using Local Geometric Patterns

This paper presents a method for segmenting a 3D point cloud into planar surfaces using recently obtained discretegeometry results. In discrete geometry, a discrete plane is defined as a set of grid points lying between two parallel planes with a small distance, called thickness. In contrast to the continuous case, there exist a finite number of local geometric patterns （LGPs） appearing on discrete planes. Moreover, such an LGP does not possess the unique normal vector but a set of normal vectors. By using those LGP properties, we first reject non-linear points from a point cloud, and then classify non-rejected points whose LGPs have common normal vectors into a planar-surface-point set. From each segmented point set, we also estimate the values of parameters of a discrete plane by minimizing its thickness.

Green tea, epigallocatechin gallate and the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease: clinical evidence

Given its increasing global prevalence,Alzheimer’s disease(AD)has become a major public health challenge *** symptomatic treatments available for AD have shown no significant efficacy,and no disease-modifying interventions are capable of slowing the progression of the *** potential of lifestyle-related factors,including diet,is increasingly recognized as an important consideration in the primary prevention of *** mechanisms potentially underlying neuroprotective effects of bioactive components contained in tea,such as(-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate,as well as their preventive efficacy against AD,have been elucidated in preclinical ***,in contrast to the abundance of mechanistic findings in animals,clinical results demonstrating efficacy in humans are *** epidemiological studies have provided some evidence indicating that green tea consumption is associated with a reduced risk of age-related cognitive decline and AD,a causal relationship cannot be established on the basis of these *** clinical evidence regarding preventive or therapeutic effects of green tea and its bioactive components is unsatisfactory.A role of green tea in the prevention of AD cannot be recommended until well-designed,randomized,placebo-controlled clinical trials using standardized formulations confirm the purported beneficial effects of green tea.

Food intolerance and the few-foods(or oligoantigenic)diet in children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

The hypothesis that some children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)may show sensitivity or allergic reactions to various food items has led to the development of the the few-foods(or oligoantigenic)*** rationale of the diet is to eliminate certain foods from the diet in order to exclude potential allergens contained either naturally in food or in artificial ingredients with allergenic *** oligoantigenic diet attempts to identify individual foods to which a person might be ***,ADHD symptoms are monitored while multiple foods are excluded from the ***,if symptoms remit,foods are re-introduced,while observing the individual for the return of *** advantage of the oligoantigenic diet is that it can be tailored to the individual.A growing body of evidence suggests that behavioral symptoms of subgroups of children with ADHD may benefit from the elimination of certain *** effect sizes of an oligoantigenic diet regarding improvement of ADHD symptoms have been found to be medium to *** evidence suggests that the investigation of the role of food hypersensitivities in ADHD is a promising avenue worthy of further *** large-scale,randomized controlled studies including assessment of long-term outcome are therefore warranted.
